PRESIDENTS’ REPORT APRIL 9TH 2018 MEETING

Irene and I accepted an invitation to attend the AGM of the State Ex-Navy Assoc WA which was held in Rockingham. There were a number of attendees from various sub-sections including Julia who attended in her role of treasurer for the Perth Sub-section. Marj Heaney as Vice-President on State Committee. Jo Brooke, Vice President of Rockingham Sub-

section was the favourite attendee as she and husband Peter supplied a delicious lunch at the end of proceedings. Like all associations the State is struggling to recruit new members and to replace committee members. Jack LeCras, who has served as President, Secretary and Treasurer for many years has resigned his current position as Secretary. Unfortunately, the younger generation appear to be ambivalent about joining associations or taking a position on committees. This has affected the number of Advocates available to help veterans apply for benefits. The present numbers have declined some due to ill health and others perhaps because of the heavy workload associated with the role. Most of you are aware of the proposal by the Commonwealth to sell Leeuwin to developers for residential use. Geoff Curran, who holds the position of State History Officer, has maintained his enthusiasm for actively pursuing the Associations interest in preserving elements of HMAS Leeuwin – such as the drill hall complex, memorial forecourt and the mast for their heritage value. Geoff has had contact with Federal and State Governments, Director of Defence Disposals – who has assured him of

her support and Town of East Fremantle seeking permission to present input into the Leeuwin Vision Plan. Should the heritage listing request be successful then the above sections of Leeuwin will be preserved within the State Act.

WRANS-RAN WOMENS ASSOCIATION OF WA MAY 2018 NEWSLETTERProceedings at a standstill until the Commonwealth officially hands Leeuwin over to the State. On Saturday sixteen members met at the Esplanade Hotel for our annual morning tea which as usual flowed into lunch. We were pleased to have Alice Varley and Ann De-Vries back from their wanderings, to catch-up with Maggie Patterson and Ann Godden and to welcome new comer Kerry Matthews to our association. The flow of conversation only stopped when we were all busy devouring lunch. Thayna, hotel events organiser kindly gave us a private dining area away from the general public. A wise move considering the constant flow of conversation generated by a group of garrulous ladies. May have saved her being swamped with complaints about noise. To all who attended – thank you for your support – for those who were unable to come this year we hope that you will join us next time.Anzac Day twenty of us marched down St George’s Terrace in beautiful autumn sunshine while six members processed us in vehicles.

This year the Service was held in the Concert Hall. Once again we lunched at the Bowling Club in Plain St where – along with 5 guests we enjoyed time with good friends. Two of our guests, ex-RAN - made application to join the Association which made the day even better.Anne De Vries has written a full report on Anzac Day for the Newsletter.

MARCH GUEST SPEAKER

Joe Newbold was our guest speaker in March. Joe was born in WA and in 1965 joined the Navy as a Jnr Recruit at Leeuwin and went on to serve on HMAS Sydney, Teal, Stalwart, and Melbourne becoming an SBA and Under Water Medicine personnel. After leaving the Navy he became an architectural draftsman and also was involved with a Medical Lab Co in WA but because of his

profession he moved around quite a lot.Joe made a connection with a local priest and decided he was interested in becoming a priest and after 4 years of study he was ordained in 1990 serving at Parishes in Fremantle, Lynwood, Armidale and Mt Pleasant before becoming a Police Chaplain in 2012. As a Police Chaplain there are many aspects of the job that are daunting, complex and stressful but also fulfilling and he gives pastoral care to the Police and their families. He is called out to accidents and deaths which can be extremely distressful.  When Joe needs help himself, he is able to talk to his Priest.  The talk was very interesting, and Joe came across as an extremely caring and warm person and seems to me to be the right person for the job.

Never mind we will have a ball, on entering the mess we were greeted by the Mad Hatter himself and a glass of champagne. The room was set up lovely with all wonderland paraphernalia adorning the tables. Well done to all involved.Raffle tickets purchased and a perusal of the many display stalls, with small tokens collected pens etc.The afternoon tea itself was fantastic with the Navy cadets, Tafe hospitality students and HMAS Stirling staff putting on a wonderful afternoon spread.

Down to the business side of the day, our table doing well with Jan winning the door prize a river cruise with dinner, and of course Mum (Bev)and myself (Jo)winning best dressed as Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum, we received a $100 Myer gift card. Many others on our table won raffle prizes. Also at our table was Alice (Maxine), the Queen of Hearts (Marge), Mad Hatter (Sue) and the rabbit (Irene).I think I can say on behalf of all who attended we had an awesome day.

MEET AND GREET -REUNIONTHURSDAY 1ST MARCH 2018

Thursday night was the Meet and Greet and for some unusual reason June and myself were ready early, so we ended up on the first bus to arrive at the Diggers Club, which was before the free drink was available. So as we were there with Helen and Paul Gilmore-Walsh, Paul bought us a bottle of bubbly which was appreciated. This time around they had the long table and chairs to sit at instead of standing all night. After all the buses arrived an aboriginal elder came on stage to do the welcome to country. During the night the finger food was as

No more to be said. When it was time to leave six of us decided to go downstairs to order some food but unfortunately the kitchen closed at 9 30pm and we arrived at 9 35 pm. We had a choice of leftover sandwiches in a cabinet, so at that stage we would have eaten anything, but they kindly toasted them for us.We then spent another hour chatting before we grabbed a taxi back to the Ramada. We made a lot of noise did a lot of catching up that night but that is what a reunion is all about.

HUNTER VALLEY GARDENS – FRIDAY 2ND MARCH 2018

A busload of happy tourists left the Ramada and headed off to the Gardens looking forward to a lovely day out even though it started very cloudy and a little bit drizzly. Once we arrived people went in all directions. Some into the café for refreshments, others on the train ride to check which gardens to have a look at first, and others just meandered their way around.A group of us went into the café for our morning coffee/tea before venturing any further. Once the train came back we all piled on and away we went around the gardens to see what we would try first. The commentary was extremely informative and we enjoyed doing it the easy way to get our bearings.

The gardens span over 25 acres and has 10 stunning feature gardens, 8kms of walking paths, more than six thousand trees, one million ground covers and six hundred thousand shrubs and if that is not enough they also have a carousel and a ferris wheel which were closed at the time of our visit. We had a lovely time wandering around the different featured gardens and went back to visiting our childhood at the Story book garden which included humpty dumpty, Jack and Jill, Alice in Wonderland just to mention a few.

The rose garden was beautiful , in fact, everywhere you wandered you found something unique and quite stunning. The imagination and creativity that was used to make all these gardens so very different was amazing.Once we had seen everything that we wanted to see, we decided to go over to the shopping village to have something to eat at the restaurant while others headed straight for the chocolate shop (I can’t imagine why!!) the alpaca shop and, also the souvenir shop. What a great way to spend a day.

ANZAC WALK AND SCRATCHLEY FORT – SATURDAY 3RD MARCH 2018

On a lovely warm sunny day, we all gathered on the footpath ready to board the coach at Port Stephens for a great day out in Newcastle, leaving at 9am on the dot. A great drive through the countryside to arrive at Newcastle going past big machinery at the coal mines. I was surprised to see so much coal, I did not realize the mining is still going on.

Lovely Heritage Listed Buildings in this City like the Railway Station etc. I was impressed by the huge C of E Church, and I was

WRANS-RAN WOMENS ASSOCIATION OF WA MAY 2018 NEWSLETTERdisappointed not to have time to go inside for a good look. Stockton Beach was pointed out to us - apparently the only beach in the world that can be seen from the moon!

The Anzac Walk along the cliff tops was very impressive also - really lovely with metal cut-outs of troops all along the way. At the bottom of the walk (we went downhill I am pleased to say) is a nice swimming beach and cafe etc. We stopped for an hour in Newcastle to have lunch - walked around the wharf type area, lots of eateries to choose from.

Then on to Port Scratchley which was built in the 1800's to protect from the expected invasion of the Russians, needless to say they never came! The gun there is fired every day at 1pm and we were supposed to arrive in time but unfortunately two Ladies lost track of time at lunch and precious minutes were lost waiting for them. Eventually we had to leave, and the other coach had to divert to pick them up, so we had two coaches of ladies not very happy to say the least. At long last we arrived at the Fort and had an interesting tour of the gun tunnels. Would not have liked to be a soldier working down them, hot and humid and only candles as lighting and having to be very careful of flames because of all the ammunition. Our guide was a spritely 92year old with lots of information and jokes

Who was the WA Ex-Wran seen flirting with the extremely good- looking soldier playing cards with him no less, cuddling up and having photos taken??. So after a great day out we settled in to our coach for a nice long drive back to Port Stephens, tired but happy with time to rest and recuperate for our Dinner that night

GALA DINNER REUNION3 MARCH 2018 – PORT STEPHENS. NSW

Attending the gala dinner, catching up with friends who we don’t get to see very often. Some however live in the West and we travel over east to catch up.The nights programme was full, with Rosemary being the M/C for the evening. Val the president gave the president’s speech on behalf of the Hunter region. Anne Lewington did us proud speaking on our behalf with information about our 2020 reunion.Barbara Powell from the WA Association was presented with a beautiful silver plate for being the earliest year (1953) enlisted WRAN at the reunion.Food was served and lots of chatter and laughter could be heard around the room with over 450 attending. Thousands of photos were taken on the night, I’m awaiting the delivery of my photos from the photographer, and I will bring to our next meeting.

WRANS-RAN WOMENS ASSOCIATION OF WA MAY 2018 NEWSLETTERA wonderful band played during the evening, the music was ideal for the chatter to continue, and of course got those who thought they were 20 again up onto the dance floor. Not sure how they fared on Sunday, I’m sure a few sore legs at least.

An impromptu floor show appeared on the dance floor when the music started playing “In the Navy” Our very own Village People (ex WRANS) danced around the room, with everyone applauding and cheering. The laughter had to be heard all around Port Stephen’s, what a great display of mateship. Do I mention our very own Coral as the construction worker. All in all, a great night, fantastic catch-up and roll on 2020, so we can showcase the West.

GETWELLAS AND FAREWELLA BBQ – SUNDAY 4TH MARCH 2018The last but not least function of the reunion concluded at the Shoal Bay foreshore (which was only about a 5 minute walk from the Ramada) with a brunch catered by the Nelson Bay Rotary Club who provided a wonderful breakfast for all to enjoy. There was so much food many people went back for seconds as it was so lovely. The morning was extremely hot and humid, so everyone scurried down there to find a shady spot where possible. Table and chairs were set out under the trees overlooking the bay and it was really lovely. After everyone had partaken of loads of food there were a few farewell speeches and then

On the train home Alice and myself were approached by a gentleman and asked if we knew Pat Ingham who was her nephew.  Pat was a WW11 member and was a very active member with our Association. So
