We Learn We Care We are Safe We Matter

Principal’s Report On the 19th and 20th of June I was

asked to participate in the

National Leadership Summit for

Disabilities. During the two days I

was fortunate to meet some

amazing advocates for people

with a disability one of whom was

Kurt Fearnley.

One of the things that he said

was “that if we don’t get

challenged we remain static and

static is not acceptable”.

I hope that as a staff and wider school community

we are able to continue to challenge our students

to reach their potential and to hold high

expectations for each one of them as they work

toward achieving individual successes both great

and small.

In light of recent comments made by Senator

Pauline Hanson I wanted to share some social

media thoughts by staff members:

Students who attend SSPs are not 'segregated' or

hidden. They are nurtured, educated and

extensively supported by specialist educators who

go above and beyond their duties to deliver

appropriate, individualised education. Many

families choose an SSP as the best learning

environment for their children - often after

unsuccessful attempts at alternate options - and that

choice is theirs to make without judgement. I am

proud to work in an SSP. I am proud of my students,

and their achievements, every single day.

Fair isn't everybody getting the same thing.

Fair is everyone getting what they need in order to

be successful.

I wouldn't trade my job for a single thing or the

people I work with! You know you have it lucky

when your escape from the horrible things going on

in the world is your workplace!

On a lighter note thank you to Tyler’s family and

friends, Lexi’s dad and staff for their weekend efforts

in re filling our sandpits.

Last week we welcomed a new student to

Peterborough School. Brendon has quickly made

friends and is a member of HS4.

Sue Corkery

The Peterborough Garden Project The final details of design are taking place for our

sensory garden project. Last week HS4 students assisted

Yallah TAFE students to measure the garden site and

discuss the design. The garden will be located at the

front of the school. It will be a calm place accessible to

all students in the school.

Congratulations to Nancy

who was awarded her

certificate for 20 years of

teaching service.

As this is the last newsletter

before the holidays I would

like to wish everyone a safe

and happy two weeks.

School resumes for students

on Tuesday 18th July.

In our High School classrooms.... H.S.6 had a very busy and productive term 2.

Students participated in day long post school

options experiences, went to community based

work experience for the first time, danced their

hearts out at dance festival, participated in special

events, started ‘boot camp’ exercises to build our

strength and endurance and practiced our BBQ

skills all over the Illawarra with Deb and Blake. Our

Italian studies were ‘bellissimo’ as we cooked pizza

(including the dough) and learnt about Italian

language, geography and history. Next term we

will learn about Italian Art. -Jennie Warren

Upcoming Events • July 17th - Staff Development Day

Staff will be completing a training update in

‘Health Care Procedures’.

• July 18th - Students return to start Term 3

• August 23rd - Book Week Assembly

• August 24th, 25th, 26th – Southern Stars

In our Primary School classrooms.... The Echidnas love books, especially those with

colourful pages. At the moment we are reading

books nominated for this year’s Book Week awards.

We have been very busy creating photo diaries to

share with our families and learning to match the

letters of our names. We love mixing together different

colours and textures during our sensory cooking

session. Whenever we have a birthday we all help to

make fairy cakes!

One of our favourite sessions of the week is music

when we are joined by our buddies from Warilla

Primary School. We enjoy learning new songs and

playing different instruments. Our all time favourite

song is about monkeys jumping on a bed.

‘My History’ is a unit we have been working on as we

look at photos of ourselves in different stages in our

lives. We have an area in our classroom where all our

photos are displayed so that we can look at them

anytime - Mel Davey

Be a Pirate Day What a fun day for students and staff on the ‘Be a

Pirate Day’ in week 7. Lots of students and staff

came to school dressed in their pirate best.

Everyone had fun talking and acting like a pirate.

The SRC and Chrissie organised this fundraiser. We

raised $140 for childhood brain cancer. Ahoy Me Hearties!

How fortunate were students, staff and parents

when we viewed a performance of ‘Charlie and

The Chocolate Factory’ in the school hall last week.

EVERYONE was blown away by the creativity of our

dance students. We were even given an encore.

Everyone is not only proud of our wonderful dance

students but also our wonderful dance festival staff.
