The vision of the North Carolina Central University School of Law Black Law Students Association’s Internship Program is to be recognized as the nation’s leading internship program for graduates and undergraduates who are dedicated to academic excellence, the empowerment of communities, professional development, and civic engagement and social change. The undergraduate program’s core values are:

• To advance the needs of the Black community to maintain balance and equality in a diverse education environment

• To provide equal access in professional, educational and career development opportunities• To respect and understand various perspectives, values and cultures• To show dedication to social justice, customer service and diverse needs• To show a Commitment to life long growth, learning, and personal improvement and achievement• To uplift the community and fight for the less privileged• To improve social, analytical and legal reasoning skills

The Mission of the North Carolina Central University School of Law Black Law Student Association’s Internship Program is to provide a challenging academic and professional program; designed to help young advocates achieve social, political and environmental change in criminal justice, juvenile justice, institutional representation, student rights, legislative and judicial justice, voting restoration and empowerment and other legislative advocacy and social justice initiatives. To encourage and instill in each student a dedication to productivity, social responsibility, professionalism, integrity and self confidence. To commit each individual to advancing the needs and advocating for the rights of the Black community and underrepresented individuals, through public service. To foster a diverse environment that will promote successful achievement in law school and the legal profession. To ensure and promote equality and fairness in the community regardless of race, sex, origin or sexual orientation.

REQUIREMENTS The requirements of the Internship program are as follows:

• Applicant must be an undergraduate or graduate student in good standing with the university they currently attend

• Applicant must submit two letters of recommendation, one (1) recommendation from their department chair and one (1) recommendation from a professor that can attest to the applicant’s academic achievement, work ethics and moral character

• Applicant must submit an academic transcript (official or unofficial) from their current institution• Applicant must write a one (1) page statement discussing: (1) why they should be accepted into the

internship program, (2) any obstacles they overcame while seeking to achieve their goals, (3) their prior or current work experience that shows a willingness to advocate for others, and (4) their future personal or career goals.

All documents should be submitted to [email protected]. All documents are due by Monday, July 18, 2011 by 5:00 pm EST.

After all documents are submitted, the selection process will be as follows: (1) a application review session by all members of the NCCU School of Law, Black Law Students Association’s executive leadership team. The team will meet to review the applications of all applicants, (2) each executive board member will score each application individually, and (4) the applicant with the highest scores will gain acceptance into the internship program. Space availability for the program is limited. Acceptance will be given until all available space is filled. Those not selected as an intern may be placed on a internship group list. Those in the internship group list will benefit from some of the programs and activities of the internship. The programs and activities are selected by the President and the Director of College Student Division. All members of the internship program (interns and groups) must participate in the program’s community service, political and social action, fundraising, and professional development activities. The interns and those in the internship group will be announced on July 29, 2011.

All interns will receive:• at least 15 hours of community service hours each semester (hours may exceed 15 hours)• practicum credit from their department chair• access to the National Black Pre-Law Conference, (admissions counselors, waived law school application

fees, etc.) and mock trial competition experience• free or reduced prices for; LSAT preparation courses, personal statement preparation, application guidance

and preparation, guidance on completing the law school admissions process, LSAC fees and law school application fees

• interns may also be eligible for academic and performance scholarships, and preparation guidance for their first year of law school
