T he Apostles are in a pit of darkness - behind locked doors, in isolation and fear, reeling from a deep sense

of loss and pain because of their Master’s death and the collapse of their dreams and ambitions.

But the risen Christ appears to them, bringing them peace and reconciliation. He shows them the wounds of his

passion, as identifying marks and as signs of life’s triumph over death. Jesus then commissions the Apostles to

the whole world and breathes on them the Holy Spirit who will transform them from frightened disciples into

courageous Apostles.

We celebrate this descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles at Pentecost. In the Acts of the Apostles, Luke sets

Pentecost 50 days after Easter. He patterns this celebration after the Jewish Pentecost that is held 50 days after the

feast of Passover. At Pentecost, the Jews recall the giving of the Ten Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai.

This prodigious event was marked by theophanies, like bolts of lightning, peals of thunder, strong wind and fire.

In drawing a parallel to the Jewish Pentecost, Luke clearly shows how the Holy Spirit supersedes the law of the

Old Covenant; henceforth all laws will draw light and interpretation from the Holy Spirit. When Luke employs

the images of strong wind and tongues of fire to depict Pentecost, he is asserting the powerful action of the Holy

Spirit in the lives of the Apostles and the positive change that can usher in renewal and rebirth.

The change in the Apostles is far from superficial. It is a tempest that brings about an upheaval. The Apostles

take the courageous journey from selfish ambition to genuine self-giving. Their old life is “burned” by the fire of

the Holy Spirit, and new life comes not only upon them but also upon the Church.

I n today’s First Reading is the account of the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles are no longer terrified

and in hiding after Jesus’ crucifixion, but, driven by what seems like a powerful wind from heaven and

tongues of fire, they go out into the market square proclaiming the marvels of God. The people are from many

foreign places but everyone hears and understands in his or her own language what is being said. It signifies the

beginning of humanity’s restoration to unity.

Even more, it inaugurates the fulfilment of Jesus’ promise in today’s Gospel to ask the Father to give his follow-

ers “another Advocate to be with you for ever.” The first Advocate is Jesus himself. (Continued over page)

Speak in Words of Love (continued) The Holy Spirit is the Advocate “whom the Father will send in my name.” “Advocate”

is derived from the Latin word vacatus (“call”) and primarily refers to a judicial

advocate who is called to help a person conduct a case, or prepare a defense, before a

court. Another biblical word used of the Spirit is “Paraclete,” with a similar meaning:

“called to the side” of one in need of help, especially in a legal process. Though the

words are not used here in a legal sense they express the Holy Spirit’s mission of being

with us as our helper, to teach and guide us in the truth. The action of the Holy Spirit

explains the change in the Apostles at Pentecost and their ability to preach as they did.

Not only is the Spirit of God our helper but also, as Paul says in the Second Reading,

he has “made his home” in us. The source of this divine life of the Spirit within us is

the Father “who raised Jesus from the dead.” Having received the git of the Spirit we

are called to live “spiritual lives.” An example given in the First Letter of Peter is that

we are to “speak in words which seem to come from God.”

We may lack many things, but with the help of the Holy Spirit we can speak in words

that bring love, healing and reconciliation. When the words are accompanied by

actions of self-giving they will be understood and accepted, whatever the language

of the recipient.

Reconciliation at OLR School

I t was lovely to have Father Bill in 4R this morning as we were given the opportuni-

ty to make the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We started with a class liturgy, then

spent some time, one on one with Father Bill for Reconciliation. Whilst this was

happening, we were working on illuminating the Scripture from our liturgy “The Lost

Sheep.” The students chose a line from the Scripture that was meaningful to them and

incorporated it into their illustration.

It was a meaningful experience for the children and a beautiful liturgy to be a part of!

Family Group Mass & Morning Tea

Our Bereavement Ministry

O ur outreach to families planning funerals in our parish has become a little

depleted over time. Ideally I would like a couple of groups who can meet with

the bereaved and help them plan the funeral for their deceased. If you would volunteer

to assist in this ministry you would be exercising a great service to our people at a time

of grief. Please contact the Parish Office for details.

Children’s Liturgy

O ur Parish would like to resume the Children’s Liturgy at 9.30am Sunday Mass

in the near future, but we need helpers to run the sessions. Only a small time

commitment is required and training will be provided. If you are interested in helping,

please contact the Parish office for more information.

Presentation of Children

R efugee Week Sunday 16 June to Saturday 22 June. Refugee Week is Australia's

peak annual activity to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees and

celebrate the positive contributions made by them to Australian society. Its primary

purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that

everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another state or

territory and to offer "durable solutions" to refugees and refugee hosting countries.

Australia has many leading citizens who arrived here as refugees. Do you know some

of them and their achievements? A Welcome to Refugees Picnic is on 16 June from

11.30 am to 3 pm at the Memorial Park The Entrance. All are invited!

OLR Kids Club

J oin us for Kids Club on Saturday 15 June as we celebrate FRIENDS! Kids Club is a

great place to make new friends, but it’s also a fantastic place to BRING YOUR

FRIENDS! So bring a friend and enjoy the fun together. We play games, eat delicious

food, learn more about Jesus, and have fun! We meet in the Muldoon Room from 4-

6pm, then stay on for the Children’s Choir at 6pm Mass. Get Mum or Dad (or another

Carer) to bring you. No need to RSVP, just come along… we can’t wait to meet you!

Children under 5 must have a parent/carer remain present. All are welcome to stay.

T his Sunday we welcome the children and families who are in the Sacramental

Programme preparing for First Eucharist. The children will be handing out

prayer cards so that you may personally pray for them and their faith formation.
