FROM THE PRINCIPAL STUDENT HIT BY CAR Accompanying todays Cooee is a letter regarding an incident, yesterday afternoon, where one of our stu- dents was hit by a car while crossing the road to her home. The incident was attended by QAS and QPS and the student was transported to Toowoomba Base Hospital and subsequently to Lady Cilento Hospital where she is undergoing further medical treatment. Please see letter for further details. As a result of the Facebook article in last weeks Cooee a number of parents have contacted the school about issues they have heard of regarding issues with Facebook pages. I thought I would highlight the fact that Facebook does not allow anyone under 13 to have an account. If you are aware that your child has a Facebook account, and they are under 13, then you are supporting them using the site against the express terms and conditions of the site managers. The only way for anyone to have an account if they are under 13 is to lie about their year of birth. Schools regularly have concerned parents inform them of derogatory comments, threats and other forms of bullying behaviour made of Facebook pages by students. Our school is fortunate that to date we have not been greatly impacted by this sort of cyber bullying and I wish this to remain the case. One way for us to be protected is for parents to realise if your children followed the Facebook site s rules, then they wouldnt be experiencing issues of cyber bullying because they wouldn't have an account in the first place. If you as parents, allow your children to have Facebook accounts then, you are allowing them to be exposed to the anti-social behaviour we all hear about that occur on these so called social networkingsites. PBL (POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING) MATTERS This weeks Value is Thinking”, with a focus on, I think about the manner in which I enter and exit the school grounds”. It is very important that students enter and exit the school in a sensible manner to ensure the safety of not just themselves, but of everybody else also. Important Tips Walk on cement areas and footpaths – keeping to the left Always use the pedestrian crossing – cross between the flags and wait for the lollipop lady/man to signal you across. When crossing the road – Stop, Look, Listen and Think When being picked up from school - sit and wait quietly When arriving at school before 8am – sit quietly in Tuckshop area Walk bikes and scooters when in the school grounds. A special thanks to all parents who take the time each week to sit down and talk to their child/ren about the weeks Value and focus. If any parents have any queries or concerns or wish to discuss anything, please feel free to contact Mrs Keiryn Clements (Deputy Principal) on 46 368 333. National Walk Safely to School Day Walk Safely to School day is held this Friday 19 th May. Now in its 18 th year, it is a campaign and annual event when all primary school children, their parents and carers are encouraged to walk and commute regu- larly and safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. Parents or carers who drive to school are encouraged to park at least 1km away and walk to school. Until theyre ten, children must hold an adults hand when crossing the road. Thank you for your support and participation. SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS The partnership between you and the school, especially your child's teachers, is essential to ensuring that your child has the best opportunities to enjoy the school experience and to learn effectively. Research has proven that when parents and teachers work together, everyone benefits: students tend to earn higher grades, perform better on tests, attend school more regularly, have better behaviour, and show more posi- tive attitudes toward themselves and toward school. Your support is crucial and valued by all staff here at Darling Heights State School. Please feel free to con- tact the school or one of the teachers if you ever have any questions or if you would like opportunities to be further involved in your childs education. FROM THE PRINCIPAL STUDENT HIT BY CAR Accompanying today’s Cooee is a letter regarding an incident, yesterday afternoon, where one of our stu-dents was hit by a car while crossing the road to her home. The incident was attended by QAS and QPS and the student was transported to Toowoomba Base Hospital and subsequently to Lady Cilento Hospital where she is undergoing further medical treatment. SENIOR NEWS Cyberbullying has been a major issue amongst our cohort of late, and our students attended a talk about it on Mon-day afternoon. It would be much appreciated if you could discuss with them what they learnt at the session so as to keep them as safe as possible. A group of students represented our school ably at the recent Zone Cross Country trials, and we look forward to seeing them apply their skills to the 800m and sprints as we start athletics training this Friday. On a final note, please ensure that your child comes to school with a hat and jumper (if needed) every day. Mak-ing sure they are clearly named is also imperative as hav-ing to buy new ones is an expense best avoided.
