02 WHAT IS SCALABILITY?
Making more for less?
SCALABILITY IS…
…the ability of a system, network, or process to handle a growing amount of work in a capable manner or its ability to be enlarged to accommodate that growth.

03 WHAT DOES IT MEAN IN ELECTRONIC DESIGN?
Migration and Product Portfolio
SCALABILITY IN ELECTRONIC (HW) DESIGN MEANS….
…it should be easy to get more/less/other:
Device
• Processor Performance
• Graphical Performance
• RAM
• Price
• Power Consumption
• IO
• Lifetime
…it should be easy to extend your product portfolio by creating new products with the following different:

04 WHERE IS THE BENEFIT?
How much does it cost?

05 WHERE DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO SCALE?
Typical Scenarios for Scaling
COM EXPRESS TYPE 6 CARRIER WITH BASIC SIZE MODULE
EXAMPLE 1: CUTTING EDGE HIGH END OPS PLAYER
• High-performance CPUs for Digital Signature Applications
• Totally integrated Slot-In PC without cables
• Standardized OPS connector for easy plug in
• Different configurations available including different CPUs: Intel® Core™ i3/i5/i7/Celeron
• Easy and fast migration to latest CPU platforms due to COM approach
• Support for all common Windows embedded and Linux OS (BSPs available)
• Additional DVI-I output for a second display
• ExpressCard Slot for WLAN modules
• Integrated SSD storage
SLOT-IN PC ACCORDING TO OPS STANDARD DEFINED BY INTEL AND NEC
COM EXPRESS TYPE 1->10 CARRIER WITH MINI MODULE LIFETIME OF 15 YEARS!!!
EXAMPLE 2: LONGEVITY FOR INFLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT SERVER
• System is based on a Carrier Board and COMe mini module
• Main Interfaces are Ethernet and PCIe x1
• Original Module (COMe-mSP1) gone EOL last year
• With 2 years extend an update of the platform with new module (COMe-mBTi10) can be done inclusive certification
• As there is a pinout type change (Type 1 -> Type 10) small HW changes are necessary on the carrier board
• Driver/BSP updates are available for used OS
IFE WITH ATOM PLATFORM EXISTING SINCE 2008
06 SCALING WITHIN ONE PRODUCT?
The easiest way!
THERE ARE ALWAYS DIFFERENT VARIANTS WITH PROCESSORS…
EXAMPLE 1: MOTHERBOARD MITX-E38
…MEMORY AND FLASH
EXAMPLE 2: COME-MBT10

08 CONCLUSION
Scaling saves Cost!
SCALABILITY IN ELECTRONIC (HW) DESIGN ….
…helps saving costs through reusability when
Device • A device needs to be adapted to
different characteristics • Graphical Performance
• RAM
• Price
• Power Consumption
• IO
• Expand the lifetime by migrating to the next product generation
