Idaho’s scenic Salmon River, Hells Canyon, Sawtooth mountains, beautiful lakes, wild and scenic rivers and fantastic scenery can be found around every corner. Don’t forget, that wildlife abounds in Idaho’s back country. Central Idaho has paved road for the road biker and an abundance of gravel and forest service roads for the dual sport rider. The twisties on White Bird Hill, Rattlesnake Grade between Enterprise and Clarkston, the roads around Hells Canyon and Ox-bow Dams are full of corners. many have 10 or more twisties per mile. There are some 15, 20 and 25 m.p.h. corner’s and they mean it. The road to Elk City has a rock hanging out over the road. (Plenty high enough for motorcycles but motor homes and trucks need to check the clearance.
The Northwest Passage from Lewiston up the Lolo Pass on Highway 12, Old Winchester Grade, Old White Bird Grade, are all must rides. Headed east on the Lolo Pass the signs read corners for the next 100 miles. Don’t forget to explore the highway through the Sawtooth mountains north of Ketchum. Dual sport riders can ride the magruder Corridor from Elk City through to montana, Kleinsmidt Grade, the Lewis & Clark Trail north of Lolo Pass and the Elk City Wagon Road. The magruder Corridor has over 100 miles of gravel road with beautiful scenery. Kleinsmidt Grade has 5 miles of steep gravel. The view off the edge to the Snake River is breathtaking! It was used to transport copper ore down to the Snake River by horse and mule drawn freight wagons.
The area abounds with history, from the Lewis and Clark Trail, the Nez Perce Indian battlefields to the goldfields, there is truly something for everyone.
