Let us pray.

O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending tothem the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a rightjudgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; throughJesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity ofthe Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson: Ezekiel 37:1-14The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lordand set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me all aroundthem; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. He said tome, “Mortal, can these bones live?” I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” Then hesaid to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word ofthe Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, andyou shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, andcover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall knowthat I am the Lord.”

So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there wasa noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and therewere sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them;but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the fourwinds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” I prophesied ashe commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood ontheir feet, a vast multitude.

Then he said to me, “Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say,‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.’ Thereforeprophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to theland of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, andbring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and youshall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act,” says the Lord.

25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! *in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, *creatures both small and great.

27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, *which you have made for the sport of it.

28 All of them look to you *to give them their food in due season.

Pentecost! 2

29 You give it to them; they gather it; *you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; *you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.

31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; *and so you renew the face of the earth.

32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; *may the Lord rejoice in all his works.

33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; *he touches the mountains and they smoke.

34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; *I will praise my God while I have my being.

35 May these words of mine please him; *I will rejoice in the Lord.

37 Bless the Lord, O my soul. *Hallelujah!

Second Lesson: Acts 2:1-21When the day of Pentecost had come, thedisciples were all together in one place. Andsuddenly from heaven there came a soundlike the rush of a violent wind, and it filledthe entire house where they were sitting.Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared amongthem, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spiritand began to speak in other languages, asthe Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from everynation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered andwas bewildered, because each one heardthem speaking in the native language ofeach. Amazed and astonished, they asked,"Are not all these who are speakingGalileans? And how is it that we hear, eachof us, in our own native language?Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents ofMesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging toCyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in ourown languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All wereamazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But otherssneered and said, "They are filled with new wine."

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men ofJudea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say.Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in themorning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

`In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall seevisions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men andwomen, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I willshow portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, andsmoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before thecoming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name ofthe Lord shall be saved.' "

Hymn #522 -- Glorious things of thee are spoken1 Glorious things of thee are spoken,

Zion, city of our God;he whose word cannot be brokenformed thee for his own abode;on the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake thy sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, thou may'st smile at all thy foes.

2 See! the streams of living watersspringing from eternal love, well supply thy sons and daughtersand all fear of want remove.Who can faint, when such a riverever flows their thirst to assuage?Grace which, like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age.

3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appearfor a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus deriving from their banner, light by night, and shade by day;safe they feed upon the mannawhich he gives them when they pray.

4 Blest inhabitants of Zion, washed in the Redeemer's blood!Jesus, whom their souls rely on,makes them kings and priests to God.'Tis his love his people raisesover self to reign as kings:and as priests, his solemn praiseseach for a thank-offering brings.

Gospel: John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15Jesus said to his disciples, ”When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you fromthe Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on mybehalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. Butnow I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do notgo away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. Andwhen he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness andjudgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When theSpirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on hisown, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that areto come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mineand declare it to you.

For oursake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascendedinto heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again inglory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

Hymn #516 -- Come down, O Love divine1 Come down, O Love divine,

seek thou this soul of mine, and visit it with thine own ardor glowing;O Comforter, draw near, within my heart appear, and kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

2 O let it freely burn, till earthly passions turnto dust and ashes in its heat consuming;and let thy glorious lightshine ever on my sight, and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

3 And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long, shall far outpass the power of human telling;for none can guess its grace, till Love create a placewherein the Holy Spirit makes a dwelling.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest!Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have madeknown to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Wordspoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your SonFor in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be theSavior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, andmade us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error intotruth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when hehad given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat:This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it tothem, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, whichis shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, dothis for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

We remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection,We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all;presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they maybe the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite usto your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctifiedby the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under yourChrist, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Blessed Martin and allyour saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters;through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and gloryis yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
