CRLHC – Project Introduction


The Durban port has grown rapidly into one of the busiest general cargo ports and home to one of the largest and busiest container terminals in the Southern Hemisphere.

The activities of the port have grown substantially in recent years which simultaneously requires the port’s capacity to grow accordingly in order to keep up and support the growth in activity.

In this context Cato Ridge was identified as the ideal location for the development of the tank farm, truck stop, cold storage, car and container terminals as well as the associated services required for the operation of a fully fledged Intermodal Hub.

Cato Ridge would serve as an appropriate starting point for an industrial & commercial hub which will link the economic powerhouses of Ethekwini and Pietermaritzburg (DURBURG).



The economy of eThekwini Municipality is centred around transport and logistic activities

through the Port, domestic and export oriented manufacturing as well as tourism. As a result, the

performance of the metropolitan is closely linked to trends in both the global and national

economies however still troubled by some key challenges identified as:

CRLHC – Project DESCRIPTIONCRLHC has identified four main areas of development in Cato Ridge namely, Industrial, Commercial, Strategic Manufacturing and Social Projects. These projects will provide a stimulus for Regional, Provincial and National Economic Growth for the next 25 years. The Durban port has grown rapidly into one of the busiest general cargo ports and is home to one of the largest and busiest container terminals in the Southern Hemisphere.

It is proposed that Transnet provides the operational capability and capacity and the associated superstructure required for the efficient operation of the Cato Ridge Intermodal facility. CRLHC proposes to develop and provide the following support infrastructure:

Container and Car Terminals Rail infrastructure (within the broader development area) Mega truck stop Cold storage and warehouses facilities Multi-purpose Tank farm
