Lee Pfefer Memorial WellAware 5K May 25, 2009
Despite the rainy weather, it
was a great day to run or walk
the Third Annual Lee Pfefer Me-
morial WELLAWARE 5K at
Stephen’s Lake Park. To give
you some brief history, the WELLA-
WARE 5K has been going on since 1995
and has had a couple of different names
over the years. In 1995, it began as the
Boone Baby 5K, and then a few years
later changed to the WELLAWARE 5K.
Since the passing of Dr. Lee Pfefer in
2006, the WELLAWARE family decided
to change it again by recognizing the
late and great Dr. Pfefer. It is hard to
comprehend that it has been 3 years
since one of the founding fathers of
WELLAWARE has passed. All in all,
this 5K has been going strong for 14
years.
Fortunately, the rain did manage to
cease around 7:30 a.m. and we were
able to begin the race without a down-
pour. The race started promptly at 8:00
a.m. with 155 people ready to give it
their all and break a personal record.
The overall top Female winner was
Jennifer Anderson with a time of 22:49,
and the overall Male winner was Dus-
tin McKnight with a time of 16:59.
Congratulations to all the runners and
walkers who placed in their age group
category.

From our President
Congratulations to our 2009 CTC
Joe Marks Scholarship winners
Emma Myers and Colin McDon-
ald (see p. 10). We are proud of
them! CTC Scholarships have
been awarded since 1988. Recipi-
ents are listed under ‘Nice Things’
on our website home page.
Take a look at the link on our
website ‘Forms and Registrations’
for a list of all pdf’s available
online. The contract for Walton
Track Use, which includes dates
and times available, is there.
Thanks to Jackie Pearce for her
making that happen (see p. 15).
Have you been in Tryathletics
lately? Nancy Rezabek, Nate
Smith and Patrick Hanson brightened the shoe area, dressing
rooms, restrooms and upstairs with some fun colors! Track Club
items will be neatly organized on new shelves upstairs soon.
Paddling as cross training? Add wind, heat, bugs and rain and
that’s what some of us are calling the Missouri River 340, a 340
mile kayak/canoe race starting in Kansas City and ending in St.
Charles, August 4th— 8th. CTC members Cami Ronchetto and
myself (women’s tandem); Lisa Wells (tandem with Elaine Stoll,
Lathrop); James Kaufman (men’s tandem with Ryan Slebos, KS)
and Steve Kullman (men’s solo), are doing the event, including
other locals Colin Doggett (solo) and triathletes Todd and
Susan Shapiro (mixed tandem). Members Tom LaFontaine,
Jim Ronchetto, Nancy Rezabek, and Randy Gay will offer
ground support as we paddle down the
river. The event’s web- site Mr340 will
provide race in progress
results as we pass
check points. Come down to
Cooper’s Landing and cheer us on.
See you down the road and river,
~ Linda
Looking Back: 25 Years Ago By Joe Duncan
June 3, 1984: The Broadway Mile was a part of P & R's "Life Be In It" festival. The start
was in the Eastgate area with the finish at Eighth and Broadway. The race was won by
Gary Oringderff in 4:29, followed by Tom Moore in 4:30. CTC people: Tom Allen 5:17,
Debbie Hoxworth, first female, 5:38, Betty Bohon 5:46, Chris Ruble 5:47, Amy Allen, 9, 7:26,
Nancy Fritsch 7:36.
June 9, 1984: Only six runners for a 10k road race in the Rock Bridge area since
Hickman Track was flooded because of torrential rains. Tom LaFontaine won with a 38:54,
followed by Dick Madsen at 39:57. Joe Duncan finished last, but as he said then "it took
five good runners to beat him." Not only that, Duncan was making his debut at age 50.
Here's what he had to say about that: "Yes, Duncan is 50 now--it took him a half century to
get there, but in checking the record books, we can't see that anyone has ever done it any
faster."
June 22, 1984: Two-Person 8,000 Meter Relay (alternate 400s): 1. Bradley Ackerman
(67.3 avg per lap) & Milene Mittelhauser (77.5) 24:08; Dick Hessler (75.2) & Peter Hessler,

4:44, Tom Moore 4:53 . . Tom Coon 4:57 . . . Ben Londeree 5:08.6, age 50+ record which still
stands . . .Liz Bulman 5:29 . . .Don Johnson, 55, 5:38 . . .Tom Allen 5:47 . . Norris Kruse 6:03
July 21, 1984: 5,000 meter run, Hickman track: 1. Steve S-F 15:23 (1600 splits: 4:47, 4:59,

standing, Dick Hessler 17:35, Peter Hessler 18:16, Tom Allen 19:11, Don Johnson 19:57,
Tim Rooney 19:59, Joe Duncan 20:54 & 26 others
The June, 1984 Newsletter had the second of Tom LaFontaine's articles, this one :
"Train to Improve Your Aerobic/Anaerobic Thresholds." You need a mixture of at least one
continuous workout per week at your AERT pace, one interval workout per week at
slightly faster than your ANT pace and a long continuous run per week. In the article Tom
tells how to determine your AERT & ANT paces.

CTC Runner Profile: Emma Myers PERSONAL RECORDS
DISTANCE TIME RACE
XC 5K 19:51 XC Districts 2008
1600 5:34 Parkway South Invitational
2008
Date of Birth: I was born January 3, 1991 in Ra-
leigh, North Carolina.
How Long Have You Been Running? I have
been running 5ks since fifth grade, I competed in
track from seventh grade through twelfth grade,
and I competed in cross country from 10th
through twelfth grade.
Weekly Mileage: During track and cross coun-
try season, I run 35 to 40 miles a week, but in the
off-season, especially if I’m training for longer
races, I run 40 to 50 miles a week.
My Greatest Running Influences? My greatest
running influences would probably be my mom
and dad. Both ran in high school and still enjoy
running today. My dad often trains and races
with me as well. Additionally, I have had many
influential teammates on the cross country team
who have helped me excel as a runner.
My Favorite Workout: I absolutely love inter-
vals! We have workouts during cross country
(and track as well) where we get up early in the
morning to do continuous 200 repeats with a 400
jog in-between. It’s dark outside and the grass is
always wet with dew but it’s a blast! Then in the
afternoon, we do continuous 400 intervals with
an 800 jog in-between. It’s a long workout but it
feels great when you’re done!
My Favorite Place to Run: I don’t really have a
favorite place to run. I enjoy running in new
places or exploring new trails. Rock Bridge State
Park is always fun because there are so many dif-
ferent trails to run on.
What are your running goals? I am going to be
running my first half-marathon this July and
hopefully that will become a common race dis-
tance for me. Eventually though, I want to qual-
ify for the Boston Marathon.
Personal Info and Interests: I love anything ath-
letic: basketball, softball, rock climbing, etc. I will
be attending the University of Arizona in the fall
with the intent of majoring in physics/astronomy.
I have two younger sisters, Adelyn and Saman-
tha, and two dogs, Maggie and Lily.

(Continued from page 1) standing and really came through. We were fortunate to
have Simon Rose from KFRU be our event announcer. As I
told Simon after the race, “Thanks for taking our event to
the next level<” Simply splendid, Simon! Plenty of Star-
bucks coffee was available for the runners to warm up after
the race and small snacks like bananas, apples, Kashi bars,
bagels, Gatorade and OJ were provided by Schnucks, Hy-
Vee, and B&B Bagel Co. The six gallons of water was do-
nated by Culligan Water. The shirts this year were inspired
by Dr. Lee Pfefer’s daughter Amy Pfefer and Sonshine
Graphics. We also had gift certificates donated by Panera,
CyclExtreme and Walt’s Bike shop. The CTC team was
there to guide and help with all the pre/post event respon-
sibilities, as always. Last, but not least Boone Hospital
Center, provided their endless support on our programs
that “help improve the health of the people in the commu-
nities we serve.” A big thank you to all the sponsors that
help make our event a success.
I would like to recognize the volunteers that helped me
with this 5K. Lance Bollinger (co-director), Jeff Baird
(WELLAWARE intern), Nicky Zimmermann, Erin
Wegner, Lisa Schaffer, Jaclyn Heider, Barb Danuser, Becky
Hennesey, Nancy Lindner, David Carr, Jeff Hyde, Brian
Whorley, Cheryl Stallo, Garvin Line, Tom Elder, Angela
Malone and family and the CTC team (Linda LaFontaine,
Tom Allen, Randy Gay, Mark Lee, and Nancy Rezabek).
The YouZeum staff were also present to promote and
sign kids up for the Kids on Track summer program. That
morning we were able to sign-up over 100 kids. For more
information contact the YouZeum at 886-2006.
Boone Hospital Center’s WELLAWARE department
worked with the ER, OR and Cath Lab this year and devel-
oped a “Team 5K Competition” throughout the hospital to
encourage participation in a 5K among the BHC employ-
ees. Among the participants we had the following five
Boone Hospital Center teams: The Rehab Road Runners,
Marc Keys
Kevin Stone &
Dustin McKnight
Christy Barton
Linda LaFontaine

The Cath Lab Heart & Soles, The ER, The OR –Smooth
Operators, and the WELLAWARE Warriors. The 5Kteam
competition winner was the Heart & Soles – The Cath Lab
Team! Way to go and Congratulations!!!
This is the second 5K that I have directed and it is a
learning experience every year. I can’t thank the CTC
enough for guiding me along the way. What a great team!
Last year we didn’t have a stringer and had to create a last
minute stringer out of a couple shoelaces from the sideline
crew. This year we ran out of safety pins and had to duct-
tape for the last 15-20 participants. On a brighter note,
thanks to all the participants and sponsors, we were able
to give the CTC a check for $1200 + $860 from the
www.active.com entries. This money will help our sum-
mer youth track program and other upcoming CTC
events. -Jeff Zimmermann, Race Director & Health Promo-
tions Supervisor at Boone Hospital Center

Congratulations to our 2009
CTC Joe Marks Memorial Youth
Scholarship Recipients!
Hickman High School Senior Emma Myers and Rock Bridge High School Senior Colin
McDonald received a $1000 Columbia Track Club Joe Marks Memorial Youth Scholarship.
Emma ran track and cross country for Hickman and many CTC races. She’s helped with the
Heart of America Marathon and Summer Youth Program and other CTC events. Emma will
study physics and astronomy at The University of Arizona. Her teachers and coaches say of
Emma: “In addition to taking a tremendously rigorous course load, Emma has displayed the
time management skills necessary to balance her daily academics with varsity athletics, service
to the community and a college internship.” < “Emma has played an integral role on the
school’s cross country team. Many of the younger runners look up to Emma for knowledge,
motivation and support. She has a gift in many areas.” < “Her work ethic has won the respect
of her coaches, teachers and teammates. She has led our girls’ squad throughout her career” < “Emma is a teammate
that shows concern to the whole squad, not just varsity caliber athletes.” See this month’s CTC Runner’s Profile for
more about Emma.
Colin McDonald will attend Creighton University. He was a member of the CTC Colts Cross Country Team and
helped with the Summer Youth Program. He also ran in many CTC events. His teachers and coaches say: “Colin leads
by example and encourages his teammates daily and is very much an extension of the coach
when he is around his teammates. We are a much better team in his presence.” < “As an Ea-
gle Scout, Colin has always shown a high moral character, adamantly standing up for his be-
liefs of what is right and wrong yet always being polite and thoughtful” < “He believes peo-
ple have a responsibility to help others and not be self-serving.” Colin plans to run cross
country and track at Creighton. See a younger Colin’s CTC Runner’s Profile online (October
2004).
The CTC Scholarship Committee is proud to award Emma and Colin our scholarship. We
appreciate the time and energy they have given the Columbia Track Club. We wish them con-
tinued success in the years ahead.
Columbia Track Club,
Thank you so much for hon-
oring me with the Columbia Track Club
Joe Marks Youth Scholarship. I have been run-
ning for as long as I can remember, and Columbia
Track Club members have always supported me in what-
ever I do, whether it’s cheering me on in a 5k race or con-
gratulating me on my academic achievements.
Running has had a profound impact on my life; I have
more patience and perseverance, I have become more de-
termined to achieve my goals, and I have become more of a
leader. I thank the running community for everything
they have done to shape me into the person I am today.
I will be attending the University of Arizona in the
fall with the intent of majoring in physics/astronomy. I
hope to continue my running career throughout college
and far into the future. Thanks again for everything you
have done for me.
Sincerely, Emma Myers
Scholarship Winners Announced
A Note From Emma Dear Columbia Track Club,
Thank you for the CTC scholarship.
The Columbia Track Club has meant a lot to
me since I moved to Columbia in first grade.
Though I was just a beginning runner when I joined, the
club taught me how an active lifestyle and sharp mind go
hand in hand. I discovered the joy that can be found in
running and will never forget Coach Hessler's lively lec-
ture on how to take a corner of a cross country course.
Once I joined the RBHS cross country and track team, the
many lessons I learned at the Show-Me State Games and
with the CTC Colts benefitted me at the high school level.
I feel fortunate for the opportunity to run alongside and
volunteer with members of the CTC these past few years.
The club helped instill in me a passion for running that
cannot be extinguished as I head to college. I plan to con-
tinue running on the Creighton University cross country
team, where I will continue to utilize the many lessons
that the CTC taught me. — Colin McDonald

The 50th HOA Marathon is just around the corner (Sept. 7),
and many people have been busy making plans and prepa-
rations for the banquet, race, awards and entertainment.
Although subject to change, here are some of the high-
lights.
THE MINI-EXPO: Packet pick-up will be in the Marathon
Headquarters at the Campus Hampton Inn and Suites
(1225 Fellow’s Place, at the corner of Stadium and College
Avenues) on Sunday, Sept. 6, noon to 5 p.m. Last minute
packets can also be picked up on race day from 5 a.m. to
5:30 a.m. Books by Hal Higdon will be available, and he
will be happy to sign them, or you can bring your own
books for him to sign. Historic HOA photos and t-shirts
will be on display.
THE BANQUET: The pre-race banquet will be held at the
Campus Hampton Inn and Suites, with a perfect carbo-
loading meal: pasta, salad and dessert. Families of runners
are encouraged to attend, along with previous participants,
volunteers and CTC members. Special reduced prices are
available for children. Invited speakers include Governor
Jay Nixon, who ran the race in 1978 and 1979; Mayor Dar-
win Hindman, a great supporter of the HOA ; Master of
Ceremonies Bill Clark, who conceived the first race in 1960
and remained Race Director for the first ten
years; Dennis Hinkamp, who holds the re-
cord for fastest runner (1977, 2:29:15); Larry
Young, a two-time race walking Olympic
champion who ran the HOA in 1975 and
1976, and well known sculptor; Dick Carr
who won the first annual Dave Schulte
Award in 1974; and Hal Higdon who won in
1968 and ran again in the 25th Annual in 1984,
and 2001 at the age of 70. Former
winners will also be asked to say a
few words about their experiences,
and to give advice on running well
the next day. Entertainment will
include Irish music by Tim Langen.
THE RACE: The marathon will start
at 6:00 a.m. and run
the same course as
previous years.
Easley Hill will re-
main a prominent
and memorable
point along the run.
After winning the
race in 1968, Hal
Higdon, writing for Runner’s World, included “HOA’s no-
torious Easley Hill as among the ten toughest climbs in the
nation”. All entrants will receive the HOA race t-shirt,
which continues to be free of advertising so athletes will be
proud to wear it (one of my favorite race shirts is from the
2004 Mayor’s Midnight Sun Marathon, but I wear it less
than I might if it didn’t have ConocoPhillips ads front and
back).
THE AWARDS: This years’ medal, designed by Mike
Denehy, is bigger and more beautiful than previous med-
als, and will be presented to all finishers at the finish line.
It depicts a serious hill with a runner walking up one side
and another running down the other side. Overall winners
will receive a pair of running shoes from Tryathletics and a
nicely framed 14x20 race poster (featuring past winners
Patrick Hanson-2005, and Andrea Fischer and Michelle
McFadden-tied 1996). The two Master’s win-
ners (age 40+) will also receive running shoes.
Age/gender winners will receive plaques
(three deep). The Dave Schulte Award for
improved performance is back this year and
that winner, who achieves the best percentage
improvement over his/her time from the 2008
HOA, if under 5 hours, will receive a signed
photograph of Larry Young’s beautiful
“Marathoners” sculpture, which sits
permanently in Flat Branch Park.
All runners who are 50 years old on
the day of the race will receive a
special t-shirt stating that they fin-
ished the 50th HOA at the age of 50.
For the first time, awards will be
presented post-race at Shakespeare’s

Pizza, where free pizza will be available to runners and supporters.
THE ENTERTAINMENT: Entertainment along the course is being planned,
so interested musicians and performance artists (jugglers, dancers, etc.) should
contact Joe Duncan or Linda LaFontaine. The popular ice bath (huge!) will be
at the finish again this year.
THE PUBLIC RELATIONS: Brochures and posters have been printed and
continue to be distributed. Large posters are available for sale (only $2) at Try-
athletics. Simon Rose interviewed Bill Clark, founder, Joe Schroeder, first win-
ner, and Joe Duncan, Race Director since 1970, on KFRU 1400’s “Morning
Meeting” radio show, and more interviews are planned. Additionally, Simon
plans to run the HOA and hopes to talk “live” on the radio at various rest ar-
eas. Advertisements have appeared in magazines and newsletters around
Missouri. The Columbia Track Club has formed a HOA group on Facebook.
Irene Haskins, in her usual witty manner, wrote an article in the Columbia Daily Tribune mentioning the HOA. Hal
Higdon, mentioned the HOA on his InterActive Forum on TrainingPeaks.com. Runner’s World magazine is working on
a feature story which will appear in the September issue, on newsstands in August. Advertising in the Columbia Daily
Tribune will appear closer to the race date. Whitney Spivey has written HOA articles that will appear in the August is-
sue of Missouri Life magazine and the Sept. 3 issue of Vox magazine. Chris Gervino of KOMU-TV plans to interview Joe
Duncan and Simon Rose on his “Sports Talk” show in August. We plan to ask the Mayor and the Governor to proclaim
September 7, 2009 as Marathon Day.
THE SPONSORS: Major sponsors so far in-
clude: Columbia Track Club, Shelter Insurance,
Landmark Bank (previously First National
Bank), Hampton Inn and Suites, Tryathletics,
Culligan Water, Pepsi Cola, Schnucks, Fellini
Restaurant, Shakespeare’s Pizza, Joe Machen’s
Ford, State Highway Patrol, Columbia Police
Department, Boone County Sheriff, University
of Missouri Police, Boone County Fire Protec-
tion District, Koonse Glass, The Blue Note and
the Columbia Tribune.

to sign a book!

Conrad Nightingale was one
of several Olympians who have
participated in the Heart of
America (HOA ) Marathon. Oth-
ers were Ron Daws and Larry
Young. Conrad ran the HOA
Marathon in 1964 when he was
running at Kansas State Univer-
sity, coming in second with a
time of 3:01. In 1968 he was a
member of the US Olympic team
that went to Mexico City compet-
ing in the Steeplechase. He also
competed in Columbia in a MU-
KSU dual meet and in the last Big
8 Outdoor Track and Field
Championship on the
Memorial Stadium
Track in 1965 where
he won the exciting
mile race.
I remember en-
countering Conrad
for the first time with
his coach, DeLoss
Dodds, in the Kansas
City Airport some-
time during the win-
ter of 1964/65. They
were on their way to the East
Coast, where Conrad was to
compete in a big indoor track
meet. Dodds, a former KSU track
coach and the long-time athletic
director at the University of
Texas, was one of my roommates
at the Beta House at Kansas State
when we were college students
and we have kept up over the
years.
I imagine Conrad ran the
HOA Marathon in 1964 as part of
his training for the upcoming
cross country season. The win-
ner that year was Ron Daws, an
Olympic marathoner who fin-
ished the HOA in 2:47:27. Con-
rad returned to Columbia in the
Spring for a MU-KSU dual meet
and for the Conference Meet. I
worked as an umpire at the
meets, but I don’t remember ex-
actly what races Conrad ran in
the dual meet. I imagine he ran
(and won) the mile, but I do re-
member he doubled (or tripled)
in the 400 meter inter-
mediate hurdle race
and placed third. I told
him I thought the 400
intermediate hurdle
race was rubbing it in a
little. This race helped
him with his prepara-
tion for the steeple-
chase. The steeplechase
may not have been a
NCAA race then.
The Big 8 Confer-
ence mile race included a tal-
ented field. John Lawson of KU
had been was an early favorite,
but he was supposedly injured.
KU under coach Bill Easton had a
dominant team and an especially
strong distance contingent,
which the Dodds, the KSU coach,
had begun to challenge. Conrad
was a contender as was Tom Von
Ruden of Oklahoma State Uni-
versity. As a track umpire sta-
tioned on the final curve before
the finish, I had a good view of
the race. Coming out of the first
curve of the last lap the runners
were bunched when Conrad took
the lead. He had the lead when
he passed where I was standing,
but coming off the final curve
Tom Von Ruden made a strong
run at Conrad. Conrad was just
able to hold him off finishing in
4:01. It was a disappointment for
Conrad to have missed breaking
four minutes by one second. If
the race had been run on our pre-
sent track he might have broken
four minutes. After the race I
overheard Tom Von Ruden tell-
ing Conrad, “you were strong,
you were strong.”
Conrad earned a DVM degree
(veterinary medicine) from Kan-
sas State University in 1971.
When he served in the U.S. Air
Force he was stationed at Lack-
land Air Force Base in San Anto-
nio and he and his family fell in
love with the Texas Hill Country.
They to located in nearby Ban-
dera, Texas where Conrad has a
horse, dog, and cat clinic. He says
“one of the reasons I enjoy work-
ing with horses is that they are
athletes themselves. A lot of the
same principles and training I
had to live by apply to them as
well.”
