At the Helm Commodore Jan Jernigan
November is
such a delightful
month at CSC.
We all enjoy the
changing of the
season, the
cooler weather and colorful
shoreline at Lake Murray.
November is a month when we
give thanks for all of our
blessings. This year I am very
thankful for all of you! Our club
is filled with great members
who truly know the meaning of
teamwork. We have worked
together to make this a banner
year at CSC.
We are celebrating 10 years in
our beautiful clubhouse. We
have increased our
membership significantly and
brought in a number of new
families who are enjoying our
club. We have a brand new
playground. And the interest
in sailing at CSC is higher than
I can remember in recent
years.
Our workday was very
successful. When I asked for
someone to bring a pressure
washer, I did not realize how
many of you would bring one!
I think almost everything on
our property was pressure
washed. The club is looking
great! A special group met on
the Sunday before to help with
the drawdown slip
adjustments in the back cove.
We need to give a big shout
out to Mike Mayfield, Back
Just a reminder • • •

The Midlands Regatta is such a
special regatta. It will be
November 3rd and 4th. I have
been told to expect over 100
people, including lots of young
sailors. Please plan to be part of
the high-energy this great
regatta brings to our club.
Mark your calendars for the

November 6th at 6:30pm. I think
you will be impressed with the
slate of nominees and we want
you there to give your input.
Plan to come and enjoy Kim
Milling’s delicious soup!
November 10th is the Annual
Oyster Roast at CSC. Beth Ann
Rocheleau, Emery Clarke and
their team have planned a fun
evening. Please be sure to
reserve your spot!
I am thrilled to announce that
the Root Doctors are returning
to our Christmas Party again
this year at Forest Lake Club on

The Vice Report Vice Commodore David Mosely
I was told when I
accepted the Rear
Commodore nomination
that Columbia Sailing
Club would touch my
life in some way every
day. Those words could not have been truer. Now
as Vice Commodore and membership chairman, I
receive daily inquiries asking what is going on at
CSC. The word is out: Something new and exciting
is happening at our club and people are asking how
they can be part of it!
I am excited about the jump in membership and the
increasing enthusiasm in sailing. Did you know in
the last two years we have had 26 new
members? Sure, people come and go but our
current growth is a culmination of people and
events that have made this possible. Past boards
and flag officers developed long range plans and
wisely invested our dues. For example, they had
the foresight to buy a fleet of 420's at an incredible
price. These 420’s are getting used 2-3 times a
week. This year, the purchase of Bics and the
complete revamping of the Opti fleet were another
investment that provides our young sailors an
opportunity to travel and race with the CSC sailing
team.
What happens when
these youth get
involved and get the
sailing bug? You
turn out fantastic
sailors like Elaine
and David Parshall
who represent our
club at the highest level of competitive sailing:
SAYRA Champions, US Sailing Championship of
Champions, and the Sunfish World
Championship. CSC’s youth program is a work in
progress. Every day the board of stewards, the flag
officers, various members, and the sailing director
are breaking new ground. We are setting things in
place that will enhance our club. Columbia Sailing
Club will continue to
be represented at the
highest level!
Every day I am
touched by this club
and every day I am
prouder of all that is
happening
here. Want to be part of it? We have plenty of
opportunities, starting with the Midlands
regatta. We are expecting record numbers so if you
can volunteer, contact one of us!
New Member Applications:
Logan Fowles began
sailing with her
husband in college on a
Columbia 24. She says
that taking friends out
on that boat were some
of her favorite sailing
activities. She is
sponsoreded by Nora Fowles. Logan is married to
Jimmy Fowles. Logan and Jimmy currently reside in
Lexington and own a Helms 24 sailboat. Their two
sons are Henry and Hampton. Logan and Jimmy
enjoy taking their two boys out on the water and
competing in LMYRA and other events.

Logan is a stay-at-home mom and enjoys coming to
the club with Nora and the family. She is excited to
get the boys in the youth sailing program. Their
older son, Henry, loves sailing and is "especially
fond of Mike's hotdogs." Aren't we all? Logan was a
preschool teacher and hopes to be able to use her
planning and organizing talents to assist in the
youth sailing program.
Palmer Stewart is a
litigation case manager for
CUNA Mutual group and is
married to Amy
Stewart. He is sponsored
by Joe Reyes. Palmer and
Amy have one child Cecelia
(2006) who is actively
involved in the CSC Junior Sailing Team and has
participated in the CSC summer camps for several
years. Cecelia traveled with the CSC Junior Team to
Augusta for the Halloween Regatta and is looking
forward to representing CSC at the Midlands
Regatta in the Opti fleet.
Palmer and Amy plan to buy a Sunfish and are
currently sailing a CSC Opti. Their primary interest
in joining CSC is to foster Cecelia’s interest in sailing
and provide an environment that will allow their
family to be together on the water enjoying Cecelia’s
hobby.
Please continue to welcome and include new
members in CSC activities as they occur!
See you on the water!

The Rear Commodore’s Report Rear Commodore Bruce Seiffert
Fall is upon us! The
temperature and fall
breezes are great for
sailing. The Fall
Dinghy Series is
underway with twelve
active boats signed up.
They include “The
Renegades” group which formed during the hiatus
between the Summer and Fall Series. They were
having so much fun sailing and couldn’t wait for
the Fall Series to begin. The Renegades have
emboldened the re-energizing of sailing at our
club. We have three club Sunfish available on
Sundays. If you are interested in reserving one, get
in touch with David VanCleef.
The Midlands
Regatta will be
underway
November 3-4;
please come to
the club and
take part in the
festivities. We
are expecting
120+ boats
which will represent in the Lightning, Y-Flyer,
Laser, Sunfish, Opti and Open Bic Classes. We are
expecting 50+ children under the age of fifteen to be
competing. The International Sunfish Association
asked us to make this Regatta their Southeast
Regional Championship due to the damage in NC
caused by Hurricane Florence. Their asking us
speaks volumes for CSC. We have earned the
reputation of running outstanding Regattas due in
large part to Dick Dommel and his steady crew of
race committee volunteers and the warm welcome
our membership extends. >> KUDO’S!!
I have sent out an email asking for
recommendations for our annual awards to be
presented at the CSC Christmas Party on December
21st. We are fortunate to have some outstanding
members who are very deserving. Please take a
moment to think about this and send me your
nominations.
LMYRA is underway for the Fall. Five races have
been completed under varying wind conditions
And the Winner is… • • •

which has created some great competition. We have
four races remaining with the last race, an Island
Race, on December 1st. With the drawdown of the
lake, we have had to be very mindful on the courses
we set to avoid hazards that might put sailors in
harm’s way.
Thanks to all your support. Hope to see you on the
water!!!
