This fall, Columbia Art Center will be offering new classes in T’ai Chi Chih, narrative painting,pencil rendering, portrait drawing, jewelry, hand-sewing, bronze metal, and ceramics surfacedecoration. Columbia Art Center’s fall roster of exhibitions kicks-off with a show featuringcontemporary Latin American art!MISSION STATEMENT Columbia Art Center is dedicated to providingartistic experiences in the visual arts for all ages and interest levels and to join withlocal arts organizations and community businesses in creating diverse offerings.

OVERVIEWColumbia Art Center offers year-round art classes, rotatinggallery exhibitions, a gallery gift shop, summer art camp for children, artbirthday parties, studio rentals, a Japanese Garden, art and life enhancement lectures and more! Columbia Art Center is part of Columbia Association’sCommunity Services Division. Under Columbia Association, ColumbiaArt Center is 24 years old. It has been a functioning arts school for more than30 years and was formerly known as the Antioch Visual Arts College.

LOCATION Columbia Art Center is located in the Long Reach Village Center(next to Stonehouse Community Center) just minutes from Route 175 andTamar Drive..

DIRECTIONS From Route 29, take 175 East towards Jessup. Follow 175 forseveral miles to the light at Tamar Drive. Turn left on Tamar and go one mile.Turn right on Cloudleap Court. Turn left into Long Reach Village Center park-ing lot. Art Center is located in the courtyard past the fountain (look for largeround window). From I-95, take the MD 100 West exit (43B) towards EllicottCity. Take the Snowden River exit (3). Enter the roundabout and take the secondexit onto Snowden River Parkway. Turn right on Tamar Drive and drive .5 miles. Turn left at Cloudleap Court. Park in the Long Reach Village Centerlot on left. Center for an amazing day of creative fun. Go home with cool art

projects. Bring a friend, make new friends, bring a lunch, and enjoy

a fun day of art! (Children will be served a snack and beverage after

3:30pm.) Registration can be taken until the day before the

School’s Out date. Discounts given for advance or multiple

School’s Out Youth Visiting Artist Series (for ages 11-13):Columbia Art Center is pleased to invite students ages 11-13 to partici-

pate in its Visiting Artist Series. The series is designed to encourage

young artists to improve their technical skills while acquiring a sense of

personal expression. The program provides an opportunity for students

to connect with community artists and to cultivate a passion for the

arts. Each guest instructor will discuss their personal art and creative

process while teaching a unique and challenging workshop.

The Visiting Artist Series will only run on the following Mondays

for the 2012-2013 school year.

CERAMICS NOTE: All fall 2012 enrolled ceramics students can use open studio free of charge topractice their skills. Free open studio is available when classes are not in session. Ceramic classes includeuse of studio equipment, all bisque firings, glazes, and glaze firings for up to 20-25medium sized pieces (approximately 200 cu. in. each) per session, e.g. 10 week session =25 pieces, 8 week session = 20 pieces, etc. Students who wish to produce an excess of 25 medium pieces each session will be charged an additional firing fee per cubic inch. In this one-daythree-hour workshop participants will cover methods of centering clay andthrowing bowl and cylinder forms. This exciting event will include live music, studio demonstrations, a silent art auction, raffles, and light fare. Thehighlight of the afternoon will be the display of over 300 beautiful one-of-a-kind handmade bowls created by Columbia ArtCenter students and faculty. Columbia Art Center sets the stage andyou create the art! Columbia Art Center’sparty coordinator will help you create the perfect day for your child to includeeverything from invitations, party decorations and supplies, and a variety of art projects and techniques for you tochoose from and the final celebration with pizza and punch. OPEN STUDIO CERAMICS Designed as independent studio time for advanced ceramic students topursue personal projects during day and weekend hours when classes arenot in session. There is no instruction. COLLAGEPAPER COLLAGE: CUVISM (COGNITIVEUNCONSCIOUS VISUALITY) with George SakkalGeorge believes that art is the visual creative manifestation of human experience. He will introduce you to a methodology that will help accessthe wealth of your life’s experience stored in the memories of your unconscious mind to create unimaginable art. Using a unique paper collagemethodology involving the retina of the eye acting in conjunction withcognitive intuition, you will be guided by George’s 50 years of collage experience to explore, discover, and achieve artistic creativity. CRAFTSITALIAN DECOUPAGE with Susan KiefferHow would you like to turn that drab old piece of furniture into some-thing spectacular? Well, with “Italian decoupage” it’s truly possible! Italiandecoupage is not the old art of cutting something out of a magazine andgluing it down to a surface. This method starts with paper napkins andturns into something really special. The finished surface of your projectwill resemble a hand painted design. This technique can be done on anysmooth wooden surface. You select and bring an easily transportable pieceof wood (end table, stool, chair, or tray), and have fun transforming it intosomething that will make you proud.

INTRODUCTION TO CHINA PAINTING with Sarah SnowdenPaint a family heirloom! Learn the basic techniques of the fine art of ChinaPainting (also referred to as Porcelain Art) through demonstration andpractice. You will learn how to use brushes to apply the on-glaze paintwhile working on your porcelain. Materials fee ($10 paid to the teacher atthe first class) will cover all supplies: paints, mediums, use of instructor’sbrushes, porcelain, firings, and other supplies. INTRODUCTION TO NEEDLE FELTING with Laura Vernon RussellNeedle felting is a dry felting technique that ‘fuses’ wool fibers to a baselayer of wool or wool felt. Using specially designed needles, students in thisintroductory workshop will learn the rudiments of two-dimensional needlefelting to create a picture made with wool. Basic materials, sources, and finishing will be covered in the three-hour workshop. to inclement weather, the Columbia Art Center will not hold daytime adult classes or any youth

classes. For information regarding adult afternoon and evening classes and all weekend classes,

DISCOUNTS Individuals who live or work full-time on Columbia Association assessed prop-

erty pay the discounted “Resident” tuition for classes. All others must pay the “Non-Resident”

tuition. Access to CA facilities and programs may be denied to a Columbia Resident (member or

non-member) whose property is the subject of a covenant violation referred to the Architectural

Resource Committee for Action.

SUPPLIES Adult students are responsible for purchasing their own materials for most

classes. Refer to course description for clarification or call Columbia Art Center for additional

information. A supply list for adult classes will be supplied upon request.

CANCELLATION AND TUITION REFUNDS Columbia Art Center reserves the

right to cancel any class for any reason. In the event the Art Center must cancel a class, refund of

tuition is guaranteed. Tuition cannot be credited, prorated or refunded after the first day of
