Guitar

Guitar: (gi’tär) The guitar can be

found in almost every country in

the world. It came to South America

with the Spanish Conquistadors in

the 1500’s and quickly became a

part of a wide variety of folk music

traditions in the Andes.

Charango: (cha-ran-go) is a unique

10 stringed instrument that comes from

the Andes mountains of South America.

Instead of wood, traditional charangos

were originally made from the shell of a

hairy armadillo.

Chapchas

Chapchas: (chap·chaz) one of the most unique rattles in the world. They are made from the toenails of goats or sheep threaded onto a piece of fabric that resembles a bracelet.

Bombo

Bombo: A large

hollow drum made

of wood with animal

skin stretched over

the top and the

bottom. The bombo

is struck with a stick

or a beater to keep

the beat in many

songs from the

Andes.

Zampoñas

Zampoñ as: (zam·pon·nyas) a

type of panpipe made of hollow

reeds of different lengths. They are

played by blowing over the top of

the instrument. Zampoñ as come

in many sizes and several shapes.

They are known by different names

from region to region in the Andes.
