COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
February 9, 2014 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME
Silent Prayer
Open my ears, that I may hear voices of truth thou sendest clear;
and while the wave notes fall on my ear, everything false will disappear.
Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see.
Open my ears, illumine me, Spirit divine!
Prelude

Call to Worship
Leader: Called to be light, we would carry God's hope into the
shadows of the world.
People: Called to be salt, we would enhance the lives of those
around us, with joy.
Leader: Called to live in God's reality, we would welcome everyone
as sisters and brothers in faith.
*Hymn: “You Are My Strength When I Am Weak” GTG #519
*Prayer of Confession
Leader: This is what God hopes for us - that we will speak of the
mistakes we make, so we might be forgiven. Relying on
the Spirit for the right words, let us pray together, saying,
All: It is true we break your commandments, God of our
lives. Much worse, we break your heart when we point
the finger at those who are different from us; when we
gossip about our friends and neighbors; when we think
everything is all about us.
Forgive us, Loving God, we pray. We long to know your
ways, so open our ears to hear those words we always
ignore. We search for you each day, so open our eyes to
your wonders so we may see them anew. We would
believe in your promises, so fill our hearts with the
presence of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Silence is kept
*Words of Assurance
Leader: God will show us the way to God's realm. Gracious,
merciful, and righteous is our God of salvation!
People: God rebuilds our lives, repairs our mistakes, fills our
emptiness with hope and joy. Thanks be to God, we are
forgiven! Amen.
*Congregational Response - “Great Are You, Lord” GTG #614
Great are you, Lord: you are holy and just;
by your power we trust in your love.
Great are you, Lord: you are faithful and true;
by your mercy you prove you are love.
Great are you, Lord, and worthy of glory!
Great are you, Lord, and worthy of praise.
Great are you, Lord. We lift up our voice; we lift up our voice:
Great are you, Lord! Great are you, Lord!
*Sharing of the Peace of Christ
Leader: The peace of Christ be with you.
People: And also with you.
PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD
Children’s Sermon
(Children Pre-K through 5th Grade may leave for Sunday School.)
Anthem - “Love Is” - by Joesph Martin
Chancel Choir
Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 58:1-12 (p. 674)
Psalm 112 - adapted by Bruce Pewter
Leader: Praise the Eternal God! Happy are those who are caught
up in your awesome love, who get a mighty kick out of
doing your commandments.
People: These people will be a blessing to the community,
a generation who put in far more than they take out.
Leader: Love and compassion will be in their houses, and their
legacy will endure forever.
People: They will find light in the darkness, trusting the grace,
mercy and truth of their God. (continues on next page)
Leader: All is well when we live with open handed generosity,
and conduct our affairs with the justice of true love.
People: Our lives will then prove to be unshakeable, and our
influence will go on, long after we are gone.
Leader: By faith we will not be afraid of bad news, there will be
calm, deep down in our hearts;
People: peace in our hearts, casting out fear; knowing that in
the end evil will be vanquished.
Leader: The wicked shall angrily fight back in vain, their
boasting will come to nothing, though they gnash their
teeth they shall be no more.
People: Happy are those who share what they have with the
poor, such right-living will endure forever and ever,
and the trumpets of God will sound on the other side!
*Hymn - “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace” GTG #753
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 5:13-20 (p. 880)
Sermon: “All That Glitters”
The Rev. Dr. Katherine G. Killebrew

*Affirmation of Faith - Our Vision & Mission Statement
Leader: The Collingswood Presbyterian Church Congregation, as part of the Christian Church, Presbyterian Church USA, is called to Worship and Serve the Lord by: All: Constantly seeking renewal through God’s Grace and Wisdom.
Welcoming and reaching out to all of God’s community.
Providing for education in Christian and Presbyterian principles.
Ministering to everyone through community and worldwide mission.
Sharing the Christian message as expressed in the gospel. Leader: We seek to become: All: A church that witnesses to the community and the world by sharing and demonstrating our relationship with Christ.
A church that encourages all people to know God’s great love revealed in Jesus Christ.
A church that faithfully listens for God’s will for our lives and our community
A community of God that is an open, inviting, caring family of faith where all are embraced, accepted and loved.
Offering Our offerings are not meant to maintain an institution,
but to enhance a ministry. The focus of our church programs and activities goes beyond our being comforted and informed.
May the well-being of our sisters and brothers around the world be at the forefront of our generous and sacrificial giving. Amen
Offertory - “Glorify Thy Name” - by Donald Adkins Chancel Choir

Nursery is for children aged birth to 3 years old. Our nursery work-ers are Madeline Almand, Brie Lynch, and Natalie Sperlunto. Parents are invited to sign-up in the nursery to come in and do an activity such as a song, read a book, or other activity with the older nursery children.
Last week in Sunday School we talked about
how the rebuilding of the temple was halted,
but King Darius gave permission for the work
to continue. The temple was completed and
dedicated to God with joy. This week we will talk about how hearing
God’s word brings joy. Ezra and Nehemiah told the people not to
weep but, to celebrate when they gathered to hear God’s laws. Please
ask the children what they learned. You may pick your children up in
Calvin Hall after service.
We are breaking the classes down differently this year. We will have
a pre-reader group that will be Preschool – Kindergarten, the name
for that group will be the Sheep. Our next group will be 1st and 2nd
grade that group will be know as the Shepherds, and oldest group
for Sunday School will be 3rd – 5th grade, will be known as the
Disciples.

What is that Per Capita Envelope in my box of envelopes?
Many years ago, the Presbyterian Church wanted to be sure that anyone could come to the meetings of the General Assembly (national church), Synod, and Presbytery. They didn’t want to have an elitist church where only the wealthy landowners would meet to make decisions about the government of the church. So they established a small per member fee that each church would pay to the governing bodies so those meetings could pay for those gatherings. That was the beginning of per capita. Now per capita pays for legal costs, administrative costs of the national and regional offices, and still the meeting costs of those bodies. Because of per capita, our Presbyterian Church Mission pledge goes for mission work and not for administrative overhead, like many other organizations. Some people call it a tax, which it isn’t. Nor is it a “franchise fee.” It is our church’s commitment to make representation equal and administration costs low for mission ventures. We ask that each adult member and confirmand (not per family…per member) pay $40.00 in addition to your pledge. If you don’t, then our church has to dip into the money pledged for our work here at CPC. Won’t you please consider making this donation? Thanks! Your Stewardship and Finance Committee
Next Confirmation class dates Wednesday, February 19, March 5 & 19
We received thank you notes from St. Paul’s Food Pantry, Ronald McDonald House (soda
