Got toys? Books? Corks? In honor of Earth Day, Dustless Hardwood Floors, located at 487 Haddon Ave in Collingswood, will collect gently used toys and books thru Sat Apr 30. Gather your unwanted toys and books and leave them in the collection box on the porch at Dustless Hardwood Floors. Or bring them to the company’s booth at Collingswood’s Green Festival on Sat Apr 16, from 10am to 2pm, on Irvin Ave. Items will be donated to Camden County Head Start, helping the program reach its goal for in-kind donations and qualify for matching funds. During the festival, representatives from Dustless Hardwood Floors will be on hand to offer advice about environmentally conscious hardwood flooring. They will also collect wine corks to be recycled and provide information to the public about donating gently used furniture. 278-6249; 854-3882
Going green is getting easier Last year, Collingswood residents recycled plastics labeled #3 thru #7 by voluntarily hauling plastic refuse to the dumpster behind the Bike Share Garage. These efforts kept many yogurt cups, battery packages, milk and juice caps, take-out packages, and toys out of area landfills. Well, giving the planet a break just got easier. Residents can now leave their #1, #2, #4, #5, and #7-plastics curbside! Residents can continue bringing #3- and #6-plastics to the dumpster behind the Bike Share Garage. Thanks to single-stream recycling, glass, paper, metals, and plastics can be left together – in the blue recycle bins – at the curb. If you need a few more bins to accommodate your recyclables, call Public Works at 858-0533. To help reduce electronics in our waste stream, e-waste – TVs, computers, and monitors – must be disposed of properly (it’s the law). Collingswood operates an electronics drop-spot – behind the Public Works Garage at 713 Atlantic Ave – to encourage year-round e-recycling. To learn more about these initiatives, visit the “Green Connections” page at collingswood.com.

What’s Your Take?Collingswood’s annual Green Festival will take
place on Sat Apr 16. What do you do to help take care
of our planet?
• What’s On found DREW COSTROFF and TARA
WILLIAMSON chasing their daughter, BRIANNA (2), in Knight
Park. According to Tara, the trio is committed to recycling. Drew
added, “My dad owns C&F Green Construction. They install solar
panels for homeowners and businesses – I help out
with that.”
• All Fired Up’s CAT BAER revealed, “I never litter, I recycle, and I don’t use aerosol cans.”
• Collingswood resident, TOMMY PANCRAZIO was found enjoying a cup of coffee at Grooveground on a brisk spring day. He tries “to eat whole foods and stay as organic as possible while supporting fair trade practices.”
• KENDALL ROOKS (9), MARK ROOKS, and RIDGEWAY GRACE

sets up recycling stations all over the
house.” Kendall also makes sure that
trash is recycled at their other eatery,
Rent-A-Chef in Haddonfield.
• SHAWN FERRY, KATELYN COSKEY, and JOSH McCULLOUGH, of Collingswood’s PrimoHoagies, try to keep the environment in mind each day. Shawn explained, “During the summer, I also work installing solar panels.” Katelyn said, “I recycle!” Josh replied, “Well,
I just had a drink and I threw the bottle into the recycling can. There you go!”
• Collingswood’s MESSIMER FAMILY takes the environment
seriously. Parents MELISSA and BOB were found doing some
local shopping while toting one-year-old OWEN (snoozing) and four-year-old CHRISTOPHER in the family wagon. Melissa said, “We reuse bags and I’m trying
to do a compost in my backyard ... we’ll see how that goes.
We also walk and take public transportation as much
as possible.”

bring your bikes and helmets). The event, sponsored by Collingswood Streets: Citizens for Biking and Walking, will include giveaways from Keswick Cycle. Parents will have an opportunity to ask questions about bike safety. To register or volunteer during the rodeo, e-mail Stella at [email protected]. Yeehaw! Be sure to stop by the Recycle Tent to learn how to recycle almost anything! The following items will be accepted during the festival: Crocks-brand shoes, Brita filters, sneakers, batteries, broken umbrellas, Capri Sun pouches, ink cartridges, cell phones, corks, bagged packing peanuts, used kitchen oil, and new/gently used toys. Representatives from the Public Works Department will be on-hand to collect hazardous waste. Haul in your top-secret documents and have them shredded on site. Perhaps the most highly anticipated addition to the Green Festival is this year’s Swap Tent. Gather your unwanted clothing, jewelry, accessories toys, books, DVD’s, CD’s, art/craft supplies, and small household items and arrange a time to drop them at the home of Melissa Michaluk ([email protected]) or Jill Chestnut Collins ([email protected]). Small items will be collected during the week preceding the festival. Larger items like strollers, baby equipment, and pieces of furniture can be dropped off at the tent on the day of the swap. As in years past, shade trees, composters, and rain barrels will be sold during the festival. Bring your appetite! Local restaurants will be offering vegetarian fare throughout the day. After you grab a bite to eat, stop by the Locavore Tent for up-to-date information about supporting local farms and businesses. For further information, visit collingswood.com and see pages 2 and 10.

Juniors remain a busy bunch The Collingswood Junior Women’s Club’s booth will be buzzing at the 2011 Collingswood Green Festival on Sat Apr 16. In addition to conducting their annual bulb sale during the festival, the Juniors will introduce their inaugural Walk-A-Thon to the public and host members Daisy Girl Scout Troop 30113 of Collingswood. During the Green Festival the Juniors will mentor Troop 30113 as the girls help pot herbs, learn about living green from the Junior’s present and past Conservation Chairs, and earn a badge or two. Throughout the day, the Juniors and Troop 30113 will work together to sell herbs in hand-painted pots. Discounts will be given to other Girl Scouts in uniform who visit the booth and pot a plant for purchase. Proceeds from the sale will benefit children’s charities. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to stop by the booth to pre-register Juniors Walk-a-Thon in Knight Park. The walk, to be held later this spring, will benefit children’s charities and help raise money to create a butterfly sanctuary at Knight Park. If you can come up with a name for the new sanctuary, be sure to submit your idea at the Juniors’ booth during the Green Festival. The Junior Woman’s Club partners with the kindergarten and first-grade Daisy troop to fulfill its mission to provide positive role models for girls and young women. Together with the Junior Women’s Club, many of the girls have visited residents at Collingswood Manor. Additional social and educational events are being planned. The Collingswood Junior Women’s Club maintains the children’s garden in Knight Park, runs the annual 4th of July Bike Parade, and hosts other events throughout the year. Proceeds from these events are donated to children’s charities and used to serve the community. Generally, the club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm at the Collingswood Public Library. Newcomers are always welcome. collsjrs.net

Senior trips Senior Citizens United Community Services (SCUCS), a non-profit social service agency headquartered in West Collingswood, has released a booklet of 2011 travel tours which have been planned for Camden County senior citizens. The booklet lists hundreds of special trips, including day trips, overnight trips, and longer adventures. • How does a short trip titled “Lobsters & Lighthouses” sound to you? Well ... the bus leaves on Jun 28. • Why not consider spending late-July on a “Canadian Maritime Adventure”? • SCUCS is inviting local seniors to tour New England Inns in October. Copies of the book are available at scucs.org under “Recreational Trips” and at the Division of Senior and Disabled Services (The Heights of Collingswood, 700 Browning Road, Suite 11, West Collingswood). 456-1121
