Research“Dark Data” in Water Quality- <0.1% of chemical
data present in water quality sampling is used by scientists and engineers. I hypothesize that the
remaining 99.9% of the data can act as a fingerprint for a wide variety of processes that occur within a watershed. Using machine learning tools, my lab
group is trying to identify useful chemical fingerprints that can detect processes of interest
within local watersheds.
Thesis Topic Ideas/Opportunities- Collect water samples from specific sources to
develop chemical libraries capable of fingerprinting anthropogenic sources of pollution.
- Identify the relevant chemical fingerprints that quantify the abundance of invasive plant species in a watershed.
- Use established chemical libraries to identify sources of nitrate pollution in groundwater.

ResearchWe study the electrochemical transformation of molecules into fuels, chemical feedstocks, and recovered resources.
Some reactions consume energy, and we study how to harness sunlight to drive them in photoelectrochemical
systems. Other reactions produce energy, and can be used in devices such as fuel cells. We put special emphasis on the use of abundant elements, such as metal oxides, to
drive electrocatalytic reactions in an economical and scalable manner.
