Our College Vision

The College is named after St Eugene de Mazenod, founder of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and the College motto is to ‘Leave Nothing Undared for the Kingdom of God.’ This translates into taking every opportunity to share the Gospel messages. It requires radical daring with necessary and appropriate risks to share Christ with the world At Mazenod we are committed to encouraging the pursuit of excellence in the intellectual, social, moral and cultural sphere for each of our students, according to their individual capacity. Religious Education is a core component, emphasising social awareness, compassion for those left out and a desire for a more just society. Mazenod College seeks to provide the means by which the potential of each of its students and that of the school community is realised. These are presented under the College aims which are broken into four basic categories: Faith, Academic, Community and Personal Development. These aims are detailed in this report. The College seeks to develop fully the intellectual, moral, creative, spiritual and

physical potential of each student in a disciplined, fair and challenging environment provided by a committed and well-qualified staff. It also seeks to instil in its students a sense of their own worth and to promote initiative, self-reliance, integrity and leadership. There is also the broader objective of instilling in students a genuine respect for others of different cultural and social backgrounds. Such a Christian Education aims to produce well-balanced, committed and articulate young men; equipped to take their place in society; who are receptive to the needs of others and ready to answer Jesus’ call to serve.

2013 Annual Report to the School Community 4

Mazenod College Overview A Catholic Secondary College to serve the boys of the Clayton/Springvale/Waverley region was the vision of the Parish Priests of the area (Frs. Lombard, Coghlan, Ryan and Gavin O.M.I.). These far-sighted men realised that the area, which was largely paddocks in 1960, was going to grow into lively suburbia. They started, even then, to plan for a College. The result of their early action was that when the school was a necessity in the late 60’s, they had already done much of the ground work.

In the first year, there were 79 students and 2 teachers. Mazenod stayed at St Joseph's Springvale until Tuesday, 22nd April 1968 when it moved into the first stage of its present building in Kernot Avenue, Mulgrave.

In 1969 two science rooms were added and in 1971 further (much needed) classrooms. Further extensions were the library / canteen in 1974, the penthouse block in 1975, the administration block in 1978 and the chapel in 1983. The College expanded to the other side of Kernot Avenue in 1984 when the Manual and Fine Arts Complex was opened. The present school library was built in 1987 when, with the addition of a Lecture Theatre and Year 12 Complex, the O'Rourke Wing opened. Finally, a new Staff and Conference Room was added in 1992 to cater for the needs of an expanding staff.

Computer room facilities were added in 1995 and the Gymnasium was fully re-furbished in 2001. In 2007, the Founders’ Complex for Music, Drama and Information Technology was completed and in 2010, a new synthetic Football pitch was installed. Construction was well under way in 2012 for the new multi-sports and activity centre, called The Provence Centre and the Library was also fully re-furbished. In 2013, The Provence Centre was completed. The Provence Centre houses the Indoor Sports of Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Chess, Table Tennis and Indoor Soccer, as well as Outdoor Basketball. The building also doubles as the gathering centre for Masses, Assemblies, Classrooms and Boardroom meetings. 2013 also saw the

opening of the College’s new Outdoor Learning Centre which contains a wetlands and Animal Breeding Program which encompasses Geography, Science and other learning areas. More important than the College buildings is the atmosphere. This is closely linked to the aims not merely as a school, but as a Catholic College entrusted with the education of Catholic boys. Mazenod College has a well-rounded and balanced curriculum in the areas of Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Sciences, Humanities, Commerce, Languages other than English, Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Education and Materials & Information Technology. There is a wide range of offerings at the senior level, including over forty VCE subjects as well as the alternative VCAL certificate. Vocational offerings (VET) include such studies as Engineering and Design, Furnishing, Hospitality Operations, Sport and Recreation and Digital Media. Students are given the opportunity to select from a wide range of offerings both in the middle and upper school. The student population is very clearly multi-cultural with the boys representing some 86 differing nationalities and cultures. Such a rich diversity leads to a healthy understanding of and respect for our national diversity so that as individuals, as a College and as a society we are all more enriched. From its inception, the College has been administered by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a missionary order of Priests, from whose founder, St Eugene de Mazenod, the College takes its name and inspiration.

2013 Annual Report to the School Community 5

Principal's Report St Eugene de Mazenod OMI was described by Pope Paul VI as having “a heart as big as the world” and it is this heart that our community is missioned to continue in new, varied and daring ways. Each and every year, we build on the great traditions of our past and we recognise and acknowledge with gratitude those families, Staff, Old Boys and Oblates who shaped our school culture. We are the custodians of that culture and we commit to growing it with a sense of responsibility. January Arriving back at the start of the year, our community was greeted with a completely refurbished Library Resource Centre thanks to our Maintenance and Grounds Staff led by Mr Greg Collins, Mr Marc Johnson and Mr Michael Tancredi. The College’s entrance along Kernot Avenue also began its transformation into what would eventually become Mazenod’s new Outdoor Learning Centre and work continued towards the completion of our new Provence Centre. February One of the first events of the year was the 90+ Assembly for 2012. This event honours the great academic achievements of our boys. I am particularly proud to present to the community in this Annual Report the outstanding results of our 2013 Graduating Class. Through dedication, hard work, determination and supportive families and teachers, many of the boys achieved results that have brought themselves, as well as their families, great joy. A phrase that was used throughout the year was that consistent study was “worth the effort” and that achieving their best would be a memory for life. We are proud of the efforts of each of these boys and are grateful for their wonderful contribution over the years in so many aspects of College and Community life. The results presented later in the Annual Report are only a part of their overall commitment to the legacy of the College.

We are particularly pleased that this year we were able to combine our outstanding VCE results with the many other achievements listed throughout this report. During February, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate elected a new Provincial, Fr Leo Mifsud OMI after Fr Harry Dyer OMI completed his term as Provincial. After Fr Harry’s six years of service, he chose to spend his sabbatical year in our community here at Mazenod, which we gratefully accepted.

Our Oblate Community made up of Fr John Sherman OMI, Fr Andrew Chen OMI and I welcomed Fr Harry Dyer OMI to the College along with new Staff and approximately 250 new students. Our College had elected Stephen Bruce as College Captain, and Andrew Lemalu and Elias Mundos as Vice Captains. Each of these boys have modelled the essential qualities of a Mazenod Man: daring, loyalty, passion and a living out of community. This good example has been recognised by both peers and Staff. I thank them and the entire Prefect and Leadership Team for the guidance that they have provided during 2013. Our Year 12 students enjoyed their Retreat at Portsea, under the care of Mr Alan McAlister, Mr Stephen Lawrence and the NET Team. During the Retreat Mass, I could not help but be very impressed with the genuine quality of the boys’ participation and prayerfulness. This gathering was extremely important in ‘shaping the heart’ of the year level that ultimately leads the school. The Mazenod College Year 7 Chess Program entered its second year with all 224 students gaining a greater appreciation for the Sport of Chess. Chess plays a significant role in the transition to Secondary School as it imparts life skills such as strategy, resilience, organisation and forward thinking. The boys also come to realise that there are consequences for actions and learn to win and lose graciously. Furthermore, I am confident that the experience is fun and helps to facilitate the social integration of each boy into the Community. This Chess Program is unique and defines the introduction to the College in Year 7.

2013 also saw the introduction of a new program where we have invited ‘Year 13 Students’ (Old Boys from the Class of 2012) to accompany the Year 7 students in each of their classes for the first two weeks of the year. The boys chosen did an excellent job and helped to make the transition into the Mazenod culture as smooth as possible. They were excellent and positive role models and I was extraordinarily impressed with the care that they showed to the younger boys. During the month of February we welcomed our third NET (National Evangelisation Team) of Simon McKinlay, Travis

2013 Annual Report to the School Community 6

Schoenfelder, Katrina Jackson, Brigid Todd and Erika Shapka. The Team once again settled very quickly into their new home and were instrumental in making the love of God and mission of the Church even more accessible to our boys. The National Evangelisation Team are a genuine treasure and demonstrate the College’s real commitment to the spiritual development of its students. I congratulate the ACC Swimming Team on their credible 4th placing at the Championships. The Intermediate Team were crowned Champions and Joel Watson broke an ACC record. This sport requires huge dedication and I thank Mr Emilio Montoya, his team and the entire squad for their commitment. The College is indeed proud of the heart that they demonstrated on the night. March Our Inaugural Mass was led by Monsignor Greg Bennet at St Patrick’s Cathedral with approximately 2500 people in attendance. This gathering really does reflect the heart of the College and allows us to all realise that our community at Mazenod is part of the wider Catholic Church. Once again the music allowed our hearts to soar and gave everyone an opportunity to find a deep connection with the God who loves them. During March we farewelled Fr Andrew Chen OMI from both our Oblate and school community. Fr Andrew’s genuine humbleness, holiness and integrity have been witnessed by many. Among the many highlights of his time with us has been his work in connecting us with the Little Flower Orphanage in Beijing, his work with Ms Xin Chen in the establishment of Mandarin as a language of the College, his strong support of the Chess Program; his availability for Religious Education classes, Mass and Reconciliation and his willingness to be involved with Liturgies, excursions, camps and staff support. We sincerely wished him well in his new appointment at St Patrick’s in Fremantle, Western Australia. March also saw the opportunity for every student to receive either the Sacrament of Reconciliation or a spiritual blessing. This opportunity was fully embraced by the boys and I sincerely thank the 20 Priests who made themselves available to our students. The boys were able to let their hearts discover that God’s love is stronger and more powerful than their sins. Our new Pope Francis was elected in March and immediately set an example and challenge to embrace the poorest members of our world and to make sure that the doors of the Church were always open to service and care. Pope Francis appealed to the heart of the Church and his words and actions have been firmly embraced by our community. On the last day of Term 1, we celebrated our most successful Mission Action Day in Mazenod’s history. While the $80,000 raised was another testimony to the heart of generosity present in the College, within the community there was also a greater awareness of poverty and the reasons it needs to be confronted. Our Old Boys also generously contributed their time and support and Mission Action Day continues to be a genuine highlight of the College calendar. It is with genuine

appreciation that I offer thanks for your generosity. The following is a breakdown of your generous donations and the Missions they will assist:

Oblate Education Mission Vietnam ($10,000) Oblate Mission India ($10,000)

Oblate Mission Sri Lanka ($10,000) Oblate Mission Indonesia ($ 10,000)

Oblate Mission Kenya ($5,000) Oblate Mission Zimbabwe ($5,000)

(second poorest country in the world) Oblate Mission in The Congo ($5,000)

(poorest country in the world) Oblate Mission Pakistan ($5,000)

Oblate Mission Bangladesh ($5,000) Oblate Mission Paraguay ($5,000)

Little Flower Orphanage China ($5,000) Rosies Oblate Youth Mission Australia ($4,000)

Life, Marriage and Family Office Australia ($1,000) When you all became members of the Mazenod College Community, you became members of the wider Oblate Community, and this means you belonged to the Oblate world. The Oblates work in some of the most difficult and poorest places on the planet. The Oblates work with and for many of the most vulnerable and abandoned people of our world and through Mission Action Day we stand with them and support them. We hope that while the boys are here at the College, a spark is lit within them that will burn bright well beyond their days at school. To be a generous, considerate and caring young man that seeks out creative ways to respond to others is one of the hallmarks of an Oblate education within the Catholic tradition.

April April saw the arrival of a new Oblate into our community in Fr David Francis OMI Even though Fr David was ultimately required to assist in one of our Oblate Parishes, he nonetheless embraced his experience and made a genuinely wonderful contribution. The International Coalition of Boys’ Schools held a Conference on ‘Building Better Men’ in Virginia (USA) and it was fortunate that the College could be represented. At this Conference we further recognised the great value that our Old Boys bring to the school and that it is also in them that we see the true value of an Oblate Catholic Education.

2013 Annual Report to the School Community 7

The Conference focused our thinking on the following areas of the College: relationships, tone, respect, spiritual awareness, small acts of kindness, learning and academic focus, the feel of the school, values of staff and our commitment to service, especially to those most in need. The College continues to make a commitment to not only be a school for boys, but also about boys. To help them discover their own personal strengths and to excel in developing them. This is the mark of the boy becoming a man. This journey we commit to travelling with you. May The Association of Catholic Schools (ACC) took on the ambitious task of conducting an Arts and Technology Exhibition at Federation Square. We supported this wonderful initiative with every area of our Arts and Technology Faculty represented. Full credit must go to the ACC for this very worthwhile event. I thank Mr Michael Keady and the entire Department for their ongoing commitment to the creativity of the boys through the Arts, Technology and Food subject areas. Over 200 pieces were on display in a non-competitive demonstration of the collective talents of the boys in our schools. Founder’s Day, 24th May 2013 saw the Opening and Blessing of our new Provence Centre. The Provence Centre is named after the region of Southern France where St Eugene de Mazenod OMI grew up, received his faith and ultimately founded the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The Provence Centre is therefore rightly ‘The Home of Mazenod’. With over 1600 members of our community and wider family present, Bishop Peter Elliott and Mr Steven Elder (Executive Director of the Catholic Education Office) blessed and opened our new facility. Founder’s Day saw a beautiful liturgy followed by demonstration Volleyball, Chess and Table Tennis matches, all in the same facility. This building will continue to evolve in its usefulness to our College Community. While being slightly delayed in its completion, it was more importantly completed under budget which pleased us all. June Our Year 10 Work Experience, Year 11 Business Week, Year 11 Retreat and Queensland Music Tour all occurred during June. With over 300 work placements, our Year 10 students experienced a great variety of occupations and the College sincerely thanks those businesses that opened their doors and workplaces to our boys. Special mention should be made to Ms Vivian Seremetis who helped coordinate both the placements and the many staff who went to visit the boys. The Year 11 Business Week and Retreat provided two very different, yet challenging experiences for our Senior students. This further demonstrated the great variety of options that our boys have and I was very proud of them all. As a further demonstration and investment into our Music Program, we ventured to Queensland with 25 of our developing band members. The boys enjoyed the great Queensland hospitality of our brother school Iona College, as well as the Noosa beach environment. 2014 will see a further development of these opportunities as many Music students

will travel to Singapore. I congratulate the entire Music Department on their continued commitment to the boys. July We welcomed Fr Irek Dampc OMI to the Oblate Community. Fr Irek is a member of our China Delegation and is in Australia to complete his studies in counselling. As part of the significant commitment to the welfare of the boys, the College employed a further counsellor in Matthew Ryan (Old Boy 1988). This brings our Counselling Team to three which will enable more students to receive the benefits of some wise and clear strategies to better cope with whatever life brings.

Our new Outdoor Learning Centre containing wetlands and animal breeding program was opened in July. Encompassing Geography, Science and other learning areas, we welcomed yabbies, fish, turtles and lizards to the College. A once neglected wasteland of the College has become a prominent and picturesque learning area through the hard work of our Grounds and Maintenance Team. Mr David Byrnes has coordinated and driven the Curriculum applications of this project and he has helped create a resource that will assist learning in the College for many years. July saw another very significant event of the College with the annual Football match between the Mazenod All Stars (composed of students in Years 7 to 12) and the Mazenod Panthers (Footballers with intellectual disabilities). In a very engaging match, the Panthers were crowned Champions for 2013. The generosity, enthusiasm and sheer joy of the contest was evident in every participant. I was incredibly proud of every member of the Mazenod Family who took part in this great event. It was during this match that I believe that the true heart of our College was displayed. I certainly do not underestimate the tremendous learning that took place during play. Thanks to Mr Adrian Connolly and Mr David Regan and their support teams for helping this much-loved event take place. August After months and months of preparation, the College Musical Footloose was performed in front of over 2400 people during its five show run. Through the hard work and dedication of students, staff, parents and technical support, the characters of the Musical came to life and entertained many, many people. The excellent standard of the sets, costumes, acting, dancing and singing delighted near sell-out crowds every

night. I sincerely thank Mr Ken Nailon and his team for once again producing such an amazing spectacular.

I congratulate Robert Todesco, Kristos D’Souza, Mark Stutz, James Michael and Joshua Roy on winning the Intermediate ACC Debating Championships. We hold a fine record in this competition and value greatly our involvement. As most families can well attest, our boys certainly enjoy an argument, particularly when arguing for something that they want. It takes significantly more skill to debate, than to argue as you genuinely need to listen to the arguments of the other and find weaknesses to pursue. I am particularly grateful to all of the staff involved in assisting and guiding the boys. I would like to thank Ms Joanne Caird, Miss Johanna O’Farrell, Ms Joanna Phillips, Mr James Tranter, Mrs Megan Marshall, Ms Felicity Kamevaar, Ms Tina Giacco, Mrs Clare Caldwell and Mr Matthew Johnson for all of their assistance of the College Debating Program. I sincerely believe that the boys who represent us do so with great dignity, respect and skill. Well done to all involved.

In August our Mazenod Volleyball Program was involved in the State Championships with eight teams representing the College with distinction. Of the five age groups that we were represented in, we were able to achieve four Gold Medals as State Champions and a Silver Medal. While these results are extremely pleasing, I was equally, if not more pleased with the development and discipline shown by the boys and their coaches. There are no doubts in my mind that the teams from Mazenod show commitment and dedication in the many hours of training they put in. Mr Damien Schumann leads a team of Old Boys in providing guidance, development and mentoring. As a result of the success of this tournament each age group has qualified in the highest Division possible, becoming the only school in the State to do so.

Our relationship with our China Delegation was further strengthened through welcoming students from Notre Dame, Hong Kong to our community. Kenny (Year 11) and Mike (Year 10) were a part of our School Community for approximately three weeks, while three girls were included as members of the Killester Community. During their time with us, they experienced great advancement in their English skills, while at the same time discovering our Australian culture. I thank the McLellan and Cappello families for generously hosting these young students from our Hong Kong Mission.

During August, an opportunity arose to offer our new Provence Centre as the training base for the National Australian Women’s Volleyball Team. We offered the facility to the team with the only condition being that they gave our boys an experience of Volleyball at the highest level in the country. The National Team agreed to play a Competitive Exhibition Match against our Senior Team and provide a one hour master class training session for our Junior Students. The National Team played an excellent game of Volleyball and our boys certainly did the College proud and even managed to win the final set 26-24 to create their own piece of Volleyball history. The Women’s Team won the other two sets 25-13 and 25-22. The standard was great and the atmosphere was electric as approximately 200 supporters enjoyed the spectacle. The experience was a wonderful example of a great working partnership between an elite sporting body and the College. The Junior students were very excited to share the court with elite athletes and I know that they will benefit greatly from the experience.

Our College Senior Chess Teams were once again very successful in the ACC Senior Tournament and as a result of hard work, practice and depth of talent were able to clean sweep the Championship with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing. This prepared the team well for an excellent 3rd place at the State Championships. Chess enjoys a significant profile within the community and once again the boys have represented the College with great distinction. September Our Cross Country Team were relegated to Division 2 in 2012 and a genuine commitment was made to try and turn the performance around this year. Through significant effort, coordination and support our Cross Country athletes responded in magnificent fashion by winning every age group in Division 2, propelling us back into Division 1. Special mention should be made of Mr Tim Ford and his team of staff who supported the boys so well, and of course, I congratulate the boys. September saw our Mothers’ Auxiliary travel to China as part of an Oblate Mission Immersion that closely resembled the experience our Senior boys receive in November. This new initiative was taken up by a number of our Mazenod Mums and brought a wonderful new dimension to the perspective and service of them all. We will look to continue these options for our Mazenod Parents into the future. The Provence Centre was transformed into a Concert Hall for the first time for the Annual Music Gala. Over 800 people were

Page 9: College Contact Information - Mazenod College …...Football pitch was installed. Construction was well under way in 2012 for the new multi-sports and activity centre, called The Provence

2013 Annual Report to the School Community 9

given the opportunity to see the great range of talent amongst our Music students. Usually the Music Gala is held at The Alexander Theatre, Monash University with a capacity of 500 people. By using the Provence Centre more family members were able to enjoy the Gala. The performances were spectacular, moving and entertaining and I could not help but be very proud of the great talent and enthusiasm of everyone involved. A special thank you goes to the Music Department for their time and dedication to the improvement of our boys.

A Language and Cultural Immersion Experience to Japan departed from the College in September. These trips are a wonderful opportunity for our students to absorb a new culture and experience many moments of language frustration and practice. The College will travel to China for the first time next year as part of the same Language Immersion Experience. Those students studying Italian will also be given the same opportunity. October As a way of ensuring that we share our facilities and also keep constant connections with our Priority Parishes, we held the Inaugural Provence Cup in our new Provence Centre. This event brought together approximately 250 students for an experience of sport and more importantly sportsmanship. Our Year 9 Students provided coaching and peer support to the boys and it was their connection and relationships that were the standout highlight of the day. As a community we were blessed to have Fr Louis Lougen OMI, the Oblate Superior General and our Australia/China Provincial and Fr Leo Mifsud OMI, visit the College and experience our community. Education Ministry is growing within the Oblates and this Province’s experience over the past 50 years is looking for ways to help the rest of the Congregation. Their visits are a great reminder that we belong to an even larger family than our own community here. November We had two Mission Immersions at the end of 2013. Fourteen Students visited China and thirteen went to India and the reports back were overwhelmingly positive as our boys and staff totally immersed themselves in two very ancient cultures. The service component of an education at Mazenod is a distinguishing feature of the College.

The College was successful in claiming the Australian Chess Championship for Middle School Years. This fantastic outcome is the result of hard work, practice and a great love of the Sport. I was pleased to hear that the boys were recognised as having a great attitude and treated all opponents with respect. For me, that was the best news. December Our Volleyball boys were able to secure a National Championship in the Under 14 category and a Silver Medal in the Under 16s. This placed us 4th ranked boys’ school in Australia. I thank everyone involved. We hosted the Oblate Cricket Carnival at the College during December and our team showed great endeavour, but were ultimately beaten by our brother school. We congratulate Iona College on their success and look forward to the Carnival next year in Western Australia. I again thank everyone involved, especially the host-stay families. Conclusion I would like to offer the following reflections on the 2013 Academic Year and I would like to thank the very many members who contribute to make it a very special community where “every heart beats true for the black, white and blue.” Oblates of Mary Immaculate The first people I would like to acknowledge and thank are my Oblate Brothers in community in Fr John Sherman OMI, Fr Harry Dyer OMI and Fr Irek Dampc OMI. Each and every day they make valuable contributions to the Oblate Ministry of the College through Sacraments, visitation, support, service and prayerfulness. Fr John continues to also serve the Province in the role of Vocations Coordinator where he encourages everyone to listen to God’s calling in their life and find the appropriate courage to respond to that call. It is my sincere hope that a current student or an Old Boy might read and reflect on the direction in life a calling from God may take them. Indeed I hope that the future Rector of Mazenod reads this article. The Oblates feel proud to work alongside the dedicated Staff of the College. Staff I would like to acknowledge and thank the staff for the extraordinary contribution they make to culture and values of our School Community. I am very aware that the Staff at the

Page 10: College Contact Information - Mazenod College …...Football pitch was installed. Construction was well under way in 2012 for the new multi-sports and activity centre, called The Provence

2013 Annual Report to the School Community 10

College offer service to our boys and families in ways that are never adequately known. This dedication and commitment to the profession of education is commendable. During 2013 the staff undertook a new Professional Development Peer Review Program and they have taken significant steps to achieve continued improvement in their own areas of expertise. Learning and teaching are the key components of a well-functioning school and our staff remain committed to the service of our boys and families. This year we held a Staff Retreat so that we were all able to recognise and appreciate our unique role in this missionary outreach of the Church. Students There is no doubt that supporting the boys’ growth into maturity, their search for knowledge and their relationship with God remain the key priorities of the College. The students here constantly amaze, inspire and challenge us all. I am fully aware that the boys at our school are not perfect, yet I also know that we are incredibly proud of their generosity, respect and genuine acts of love and service to each other and the local community. They have been involved in Mission Action Day, Rosies Oblate Youth Mission to the Homeless, Monash Gardens Aged Care Facility, Building Bridges Interfaith Network, Red Cross Collection, Red Cross Blood Donations, Disability Services, Primary School Retreats, Primary School Sports Programs, China Little Flower Orphanage and Chennai Oblate Mission in India. Each and every one of these experiences reveals the true heart of the Mazenod Man. At his best he is humble, passionate, daring, community minded, loyal and a strong advocate of the poor and vulnerable. All of these acts of service are done within the context of a Catholic Christian Community. Parents The choice of an appropriate school for your child or children is one that is taken very seriously and with much consideration. I would like to say that we fully appreciate the tremendous trust that each and every parent places in our school community. Our school remains committed to working with you in the raising of your sons as they continue to grow in maturity and wisdom. The Mothers’ Auxiliary and Father’s Association provide a wonderful means of parent involvement, service and support. Our Canteen is served by parents (mainly mums) and we are all very grateful for their generosity. I would definitely encourage you to become as involved as possible in the activities of the Mothers’ Auxiliary and Father’s Association. Board Our College is served by a Board that has the best interests of the school and community at heart. Each and every time that they gather there is a genuinely supportive atmosphere and I would like to thank Mr Peter Le Grand and every Board Member for their ongoing commitment to the community. Your service is deeply appreciated. Old Boys Under the direction of Ms Tina Giacco, Mr Matt Johnson and Mr Tony Pane, our Old Boys continue to be a vital part of our College Community and culture. Ms Giacco and Mr Johnson

have spent considerable time and energy providing the Old Boys with support, encouragement and guidance. The Old Boys made a welcome addition to Mission Action Day through an information booth on works in Vietnam and Kenya. Under the leadership of President, Mr Tony Pane the Old Boys have contributed to a mentoring project with current students and have maintained an active support for our three peak sporting Old Boys Organisations in the Old Collegians Cricket Club, Old Collegians Football Club and Mazenod United Football Club. A Music Gala was also held and Old Boys now do understand and appreciate how vital their presence is in our culture. In October we held the Steven Tynan Memorial Assembly for our Emergency Services Workers. Steven is an Old Boy of Mazenod and Police Officer who was murdered in the line of duty and this year marked the 25th Anniversary of his death. On the second Friday of November we gather to remember and celebrate the lives of our Old Boys and other members of our community who have passed away. This most certainly demonstrates that the relationship that began on the first day of a boy’s arrival at the College continues for the rest of his life and even into his eternal life. I sincerely thank each and every member of the Mazenod Community who gave their heart to the mission of our school. Every contribution is valued and necessary for us to be whole. Education in Faith

Mazenod College has been served by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in partnership with the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne since 1967. It sees daring and commitment to Christ as essential central elements in its character. We are reminded of this daring in our College motto, ‘Leave Nothing Undared for the Kingdom of God’. It requires us to seek, find, share and celebrate the presence of God among us. The College is named after the Founders of the Oblates, St Eugene de Mazenod and he asks us to do this as a Community. St Eugene de Mazenod called the people of post-revolutionary France (19th Century) back to a relationship with God. He was especially interested in supporting those that are excluded and left out. Faith

Mazenod seeks to foster in all its students development of their knowledge and love of God, through deepening their faith in Jesus Christ Mazenod seeks to develop persons who are responsible and inner directed, capable of choosing freely in conformity with a well-informed conscience. Mazenod seeks to promote a moral consciousness in its students, in accordance with Christ’s teaching and the mind of the Church, and enable them to relate it to their own lives.

Mazenod seeks to provide a suitable Christian atmosphere which encourages the growth of the whole person; provide the opportunity to integrate culture and faith through the acceptance of Christ and his ideas, attitudes and values. Mazenod seeks to provide a critical and systematic account of the teaching of the Gospel and the Catholic Church in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Archdiocese whilst at the same time enabling students to experience a sense of Christian Community. It will also put students in touch with the unique Australian Catholic Heritage which is theirs.

The presence of Priests of a missionary tradition and a beautiful Chapel with daily Eucharist are great blessings. Mass is offered at 8.10 a.m. Monday to Friday in the College Chapel, and the whole school celebrates the

Eucharist together at important times in the year. The Priests are always available pastorally for students. Reconciliation is formally made available to all students during Lent and before Christmas.

The College aims to foster the Faith of its students and to build upon the positive practice of faith and the example set by their families.

Pastoral Care The College is proud to provide a very distinctive atmosphere, which is caring, friendly and co-operative.

Each Year Level is under the care of a Coordinator and each class has a Homeroom Teacher whose role is primarily pastoral. In addition to our Priests and a supportive group of teachers, the College has the benefit of two full-time Counsellors and a Careers/Pathways Coordinator.

Mazenod has established a Peer Support and Pastoral Care Program which promotes a caring, supportive and friendly environment across the year levels. The program allows senior students to further develop their leadership skills and was also introduced to extend the pastoral care network in the College Community.

Catholic Culture

In an article published on the ZENIT website, Pope Benedict XVI explained that, “schools must ask themselves about the mission they are called to undertake in the modern social environment.” It is through daily prayer, prayer services, school liturgies, the sacraments, the integration of morals and values in academic studies, social interaction, and service to others that the school expresses its identity and reflects Jesus’ message of love. At Mazenod we aim to find a balance between academic development, spiritual nourishment and good deeds – Head, Heart and Hands.

A Culture of Leadership

A willingness to stand up for what is right and bear witness to the faith is an integral part of our Catholic Culture Identiy. It sees opportunities for boys to challenge the injustices that occur around them and seek innovative ways to do something about it as part of the Social Justice group. Or to take up the leadership of liturgies and class spiritual activities as one of the 115 boys who were Liturgy Prefects this year. Meanwhile models of youth ministry like MAYO, CSYMA and Building Bridges Interfaith Dialogue group thrive in the fertile conditions of Mazenod, nurturing the leadership talents and opportunities of the boys.

A Culture of Reflection

Blessed with the inclusion of the Oblate community here at Mazenod, we have been able to continue the tradition of daily Mass at 8.10 am. This gives each boy the opportunity to be intrinsically involved in the various steps of preparation and ministry of a celebration of the Eucharist, as well as the confidence and engagement that we hope will inspire them to become more involved in the lives of their own Parishes. Morning prayers, Rosary and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament give students a regular and profound opportunity for reflection while the staff’s passion for the teaching of Religious Education supports the place that spiritual reflection

has in the daily life of the College. Furthermore, various Retreats and opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation are designed to deepen the relationship with self, community and God for each of our students and staff. A Culture of Service

Guided by the message of St Eugene de Mazenod to ‘Leave Nothing Undared for the Kingdom of God’ Mazenod boys are challenged to serve others. The staff and students are given many opportunities and much encouragement to assist those who are under resourced. Helping people, through raising donations for ‘St Vinnies’ or the Third World, giving blood, making a ‘cuppa’ for the homeless, lending an ear to elderly citizens or running activities at schools and neighbourhood houses, fills a need in the community but in many ways it also serves to ground the boys, enabling them to get perspective on what is important and how lucky they are. It is hoped that these opportunities will inspire the boys to see the value of their gifts and to continue to serve others long after their final days in a Mazenod classroom. The balance between serving God through our Heads, our Hearts and our Hands is central to our Catholic Culture Identify. Providing opportunities to staff and students and an environment within which they can blossom is central to our mission at Mazenod; where the practical elements of ‘service for others’ are intertwined so naturally with the opportunities for personal and spiritual growth. Essentially it is our goal that students ‘enter to learn, but learn to serve’, enriched by their experiences with us, aware of who they are in God’s eyes and connected to their community at large.

Learning and Teaching

Learning is a means to self-fulfillment, material prosperity and success but it is also and especially a call to serve and be responsible for others. At Mazenod, this implies the following objectives:

That Mazenod will ensure that all its students attain the

highest level of literacy, oracy and numeracy

appropriate to their level of ability. This involves a

positive effort to respect students of lesser ability and to

cultivate their abilities to the fullest; whilst also

responding to excellence in ability in other students

That Mazenod will foster the natural creative talents of

its students developing creative, imaginative and

intuitive ways of thinking.

This embraces the twin aims of education for career

and education for leisure and involves the cultivation of

musical, artistic, craft, technological and manual skills

That Mazenod will develop through instruction in, and

provision of, a wide range of sporting and physical

activities, an awareness of the importance of physical

fitness and good nutrition as significant elements in

healthy living

That Mazenod will develop skills of analytical and

critical thought and emphasize the value of learning as

an on-going factor in self-development throughout life.

This requires the promotion of good study methods in

order that a student’s full potential be realized.

That Mazenod will provide suitable guidance to

students in subject selection throughout their school life

and especially career guidance

That Mazenod, particularly in its teaching of the

humanities subjects, promotes an appreciation of

Australia’s culture and history as well as those of other

societies and systems.

A varied program is offered, designed to serve the mixed abilities and interests of students, and the demands of the work place that they will eventually enter. The College recognises the changing demands of society in this technological age and the importance of not only an academic program but

also vocational education and training. As a consequence, information technology is utilised across the curriculum and close ties with TAFE and Industry have been developed and expanded.

Mazenod College offers a comprehensive enhancement program in areas such as Humanities, Music, Mathematics, English, Robotics and Information Technology. This culminates in Mazenod College being an enhancement centre of Melbourne University Mathematics. Students in our Enhancement program obtain credits in first year university subjects such as Mathematics and History.

Mazenod has a large and well equipped Learning Centre, with six staff members dedicated to supporting the learning needs of our students, including a significant number of funded students. This includes well-structured literacy and numeracy programs as well as individual support for students on modified courses.

Mazenod College remains committed to being:

Christ-Centred Non-Select Entry

No External Scholarships and Accessible Fees

We are particularly proud to present to the Community, the outstanding results of our own 2013 graduating class. Through dedication, commitment, hard work, determination and supportive families and teachers, many of the boys have achieved results that have brought them and their families great joy. The constant phrase that was used all throughout the year was that consistent study was “worth the effort” and that achieving their best would be a memory for life. We are proud of the efforts of every boy at the College for their wonderful contribution over the last six years in so many aspects of College and Community Life. The results presented below are only a part of their overall commitment to the legacy of the College. The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is the measure used in offering places in Higher Education and is also the measure that we use in determining our place within the educational landscape. Currently over 95% of graduating students from Mazenod undertake Higher Education. Certainly what is presented in the newspapers offers one measure of comparison and achievement, however, the picture is so much clearer when ATAR Scores are taken into consideration.

Our College Dux for 2013 is Vincent Ngo with an ATAR Score of 99.85

• 3 Students received an ATAR above 99 (top 1% of the State)

• 28 Students (16% of our cohort) received an ATAR above 95 (top 5% of the State)

• 55 students (31% of our cohort) received an ATAR

above 90 (top 10% of the State)

• 105 students (58% of our cohort) received an ATAR above 80 (top 20% of the State)

• 141 students (78% of our cohort) received an ATAR

above 70 (top 30% of the State)

Perfect Study Scores of 50 were achieved by David Abdel-Malek in Further Mathematics and Tristan Kent in English Language supplementing his Perfect Score in History Revolutions from 2012.

Our Median ATAR Score was 82.5%. This means that 50% of our students are in the top 17.5% of the State.

The College’s Median Study Score was 33 and 12% of our

students achieved a Study Score in excess of 40 (the median for each subject in the State is 30).

Perfect Study Scores of 50 were achieved in Further

National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy Tests 2013

The results from NAPLAN for students at Years 7 and 9 levels provide more information about each student, their strengths and weaknesses in Numeracy and Literacy than was ever available through the AIM tests. This extra information can be most important when it comes to identifying those students who are gifted or need extra assistance; finding deficiencies in our curriculum delivery and determining how the College compares to State and National Benchmarks.

Year 7 NAPLAN Results 2013

THIS TABLE DISPLAYS SCALED SCORES

1. In the areas of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy all Year 7 students were operating

above the minimum national benchmark of 5 – in fact the lowest Mazenod students were operating at a level equal to

level 6, and this was in Writing only

2. Again, the median score in all these disciplines were above the National Benchmark, with our “average student”

operating at a level of between 7.4 8.0

3. Our students achieved particularly well in numeracy and spelling aspects of the tests compared with the national

average – our median score was almost a Band width higher than other students in these disciplines

Student Wellbeing

Personal Development

“The Catholic School is committed to the development of the whole person since in Christ, the Perfect human, all human values find their fulfillment and unity”.

Mazenod will cultivate the development of our young students into confident young adults with a sense of compassion, initiative and well-being. The College will also continue to promote and strengthen student leadership from Year 7-12. The College will maintain its progress to resource and develop programs which help identify and extend our gifted students, as well as developing the Special Needs Program and ESL. Student Attendance

The following student attendance data indicates the average daily attendance as a percentage based on each Year Level.

Student’s attendance is recorded every morning during Homeroom and every afternoon during the final period. We record students in Homeroom or when they arrive to school after this. Parents are required to ring the school if their child is absent. All school related and long term absence is noted. We then send a system generated SMS message to all parents whose students have been marked absent with no reason given.

Expenditure and Teacher Participation in Professional Learning Teachers at Mazenod College undertook a variety of Professional Learning activities in 2013. These activities took the form of a staff development program, internal professional learning workshops, a retreat day and external conferences and seminars. 2013 saw the introduction of a staff development program based on the Group 8 model of peer coaching. This involved a two-tiered coaching process, whereby members of the Executive coached middle leaders, and middle leaders coached small groups of teachers. Central to the Group 8 program was classroom observations, student feedback and teacher self-reflection which led each teacher to formulate an individual learning plan for the year, aligned with the broader College School Improvement Framework. A highlight of the professional learning calendar for 2013 was a workshop run by Andrew Douche on the “Flipped Classroom”. Andrew visited Mazenod on a student-free day at the start of Term 4, where he presented a keynote address on the flipped classroom concept and then ran workshops with smaller groups of staff. On that day staff also had the opportunity to participate in another workshop of their choice, including Google sites, Google docs and iPad as learning tools. The Professional Learning calendar for 2013 also included a full day Staff Retreat at the Yarra Valley Conference Centre on the last day of Term 3, with all staff attending a keynote address on “The Vocation of a Staff Member in a Catholic School” by Dr Gerard O’Shea and participating in small group discussions. During the year, the College sent 2 staff members to the IBSC (International Boys’ Schools Coalition) Annual Conference held in Richmond, Virginia USA. We also sent 6 staff members for three days to Computelec’s Expanding Learning Horizons computer conference held in Lorne, Victoria. Many staff also took up Professional Learning opportunities external to the College. These included attendance at local, interstate and international conferences; assessing for VCAA examinations and participating in the review and writing of VCE Study Designs; presenting revision lectures; participating in subject associations; and pursuing further study.

Total expenditure on professional learning in 2013 was $138,723 which represents approximately $1309 per teaching staff member

Student, Parent and Staff Satisfaction In 2013 as part of the School Improvement Framework (SIF) surveys were conducted for Staff, Students and Parents. The following data show how Mazenod’s responses compare with all other secondary schools in the State. For example an 84% rating for “student management” indicates that Mazenod staff rate this area higher than 84% of other secondary schools in Victoria. In every case, a higher percentage rating is better. These results show very high staff, student and parent satisfaction with the School. Staff Climate

Staff, students and parents all rated Mazenod Catholic culture extremely highly.

Mazenod envisions itself as being a community co-operating together, witnessing Gospel values and responding to a call to service and responsibility to others. We aim to:

Provide pastoral care to the individual student Cultivate a friendly and caring atmosphere Cultivate community by maximising personal communication between staff and students and among staff, students

and parents Develop an attitude of co-operation with, and a sense of belonging, not only to the school community but also to

related community groups. This includes involvement with wider and different community groups, e.g. Parish, local social organisations and organisations with different concerns such as Red Cross Appeals and St. Vincent de Paul Society

Promote within Mazenod’s Community an appreciation of the family as the basic unit of society, as the source of its being, and that in responding to each student, we respond to the basic community

Cultivate the loyalty and solidarity of students towards the College

Students have a positive experience of school at Mazenod, and this is reflected in a number of ways:

A high attendance rate of some 95.7% across all levels The participation of students in Sport, Music and Community Service, along with our sound academic results, is a

testament to the diverse and flourishing culture of our College. Very high student attendance at major College events such as the Inaugural Mass and the annual Speech Night at

Robert Blackwood hall

Very high attendance and participation at House Athletics and House Swimming Carnivals

The high number of students that volunteer to help the College, for example Mazenod College holds two Open Days a

year and many parents within the Community are guided around the school by our current students, who are obviously

extremely proud to show off their College

Parents have a very positive regard for and strong affiliation with the College as reflected by:

The high number of applications for Year 7 enrolment each year, that well exceeds places available

The large number of sons of Old Boys and other enrolments related to the extended College family

The very high attendance rate at parent teacher nights, parent information nights, Open days and other formal College

occasions

The school enjoys high staff morale and this is reflected in a number of ways:

The high attendance rate for teachers (94.9%),

The low movement of permanent staff members each year with a reportable retention rate of 94% between 2013 & 2014

The high level of qualifications gained and further study being undertaken

A very active staff social committee

A strong sense of support and belonging as fostered by the presence of the Oblate Religious Community

Sporting Achievements All students at Mazenod are involved in Sport in some way, shape or form on a weekly basis. They are able to choose the activities they like and compete at a level at which they feel comfortable. This may be as diverse as trying out, training for and competing in the ACC Competition or involvement in a round robin Squash fixture at Monash University during Sport time. Students have the option to choose activities which ensures that they are more motivated to participate and tend to enjoy the experience. We are well aware that for many students, this weekly session may be the only time that they are involved in physical activity for the week. The hope is that by exposing students to Sport, and encouraging participation, our young men will find a range of activities that they enjoy, helping them stay active throughout life. Sport at Mazenod gives all students an opportunity to participate and compete with their peers in a safe, structured environment. It helps to generate school spirit, competition and leadership, to encourage students to try new things and to have a go. Mazenod students are lucky that they can choose from a wide range of activities each Term and utilise the College’s facilities as well as local venues in the community. Students participate in over 65 Sport Competitions over the year, including the three School Carnivals and Chess Competitions. Other activities that students participated in during House Sport in 2013 included Tennis, Squash, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Self Defence, Fitness Classes, Indoor Soccer and Chess. It was great to see the Staff enthusiastically setting up fixtures, umpiring and generally encouraging the students to make the most of their Sport time. Another wonderful aspect of House Sport was the involvement of the Old Boys when study and work commitments allowed. There was a dedicated group who assisted the Staff in supervising the weekly activities. The students enjoyed interacting with past students and sport staff appreciate their expertise. In 2013 over 1000 students represented Mazenod College in ACC Sport; an amazing achievement in a College with a total

student population of 1250. Participation has been growing steadily as students, parents and staff create a strong sporting culture. The students’ commitment to Sport was highlighted throughout the coldest months of the year when over 40 boys would on a Friday morning - rain, hail or shine - show up for Cross Country training. On such occasions it was an inspiration to see our youngest students listening to every word of the senior runners. Highlights of the year were no doubt the three Inter-House Carnivals where students were able to show their support and school spirit by representing their House. The House Carnivals both ensure maximum participation from all students and help sport staff to identify talent and form the squads for the ACC Competitions. The year also presented us with a number of sporting lessons. The euphoria of winning Premierships in Senior Tennis, Year 8 Soccer, Junior and Intermediate ACC Volleyball was accompanied by the disappointment of relegation to Division 2 for ACC Athletics and placing as Runners Up in Senior ACC Volleyball. ACC Sport would not be nearly as enjoyable or successful if not for the generous and passionate support of the Staff. We are very lucky to have so many dedicated and passionate teachers who give generously of their time and energy to organise and prepare teams. It would be impossible for all our teams to perform as well as they do without the guidance and wisdom of staff who always ask for excellence, honour and fairness from the boys both on and off the field. Sport is part of the fabric of Mazenod College but works in unison with all other faculties to give students as many experiences and challenges so as to prepare them for life after school. In this regard, I would like to acknowledge and thank the Sports Department for their ongoing service and support. There are some 1250 students involved in some sort of sporting activity every week and understandably the program requires extensive organisation. I would also extend my thanks to all the staff who contributed to the Sports Program in 2013.

New Facilities Since early February 2012, the bottom corner of Kernot Avenue has been under construction to build the largest building project in the College’s history.

Friday, 24th May 2013 (Founder’s Day) saw the Official Blessing and Opening of our new Provence Centre. It has been named The Provence Centre after St Eugene de Mazenod’s home region in the south of France.

The new Provence Centre is not a museum to be looked at, but a high level Sports and Gathering Facility that is intended to be used with respect. The new facility will be used for our House Sports, Music Gala Night, Parent Information Nights, College Assemblies, College Liturgies, College Board Meetings and Old Collegian’s Meetings. We have already received expressions of interest to create a Mazenod Basketball Club, Mazenod Volleyball League, Mazenod Table Tennis Club and Mazenod Chess Club and these exciting new developments will unfold as we grow into the new facility. We would also like to sincerely thank everyone who has contributed to the College Building Fund. We had set ourselves the goal of 40% of families making a contribution. So far, approximately 33% have done so. We will send out a further appeal at the start of June, just in time for the end of the financial year, as many families have indicated that they would be in a better position to contribute.

Other developments within the College was the new Outdoor Learning Centre just outside the main Reception. The Outdoor Learning Centre which contains a wetlands and Animal Breeding Program, will encompass Geography, Science and other learning areas. I congratulate the entire Maintenance, Gardens and Operations Team of Greg Collins, Marc Johnson, Brendan Rolfe, Michael Tancredi and Steve Charmen, as well as the Year 12 Geography Class, the VCAL Class and Mr David Byrnes for their dedication and commitment to the project. Any parent or family member is welcome to come and visit and see this new facility in action. Recently refurbished was the Library Resource Centre. A spacious and well equipped Library and Audio Visual Resource Centre, students can now have better access to a range of portable computers and other digital equipment. Recent improvements, combined with a well-managed collection of contemporary and traditional Library resources ensures that the educational and recreational needs of all students are met.
