From our Principal, John Maguire Tenā koutou katoa ngā whānau, tālofa lava, afio mai,

I wish to welcome all the students, teachers and staff back to school this week. I trust the holiday break has enabled all to enjoy some family time and be recharged and fresh for the term ahead. Certainly the students are positive and have settled into school life with renewed energy. Thank you to all parents and caregivers for ensuring your student is well presented in their uniform, prepared for learning and arriving for the school day before 8.35am.

On Wednesday evening we held our parent information evening for prospective Year 8 students and other year level students who are considering enrolment at Garin College for 2021. It was wonderful to welcome a full capacity audience and share with our wider community the exciting opportunities available to students through an education at Garin College. I am incredibly impressed with and appreciate the support and passion of our student leaders and staff who presented and interact-ed with the many visiting families throughout the evening. We look forward to welcoming students and families to our Garin Open Day on Thursday next week. Should you have friends or family con-sidering Catholic secondary education for their children, please do encourage them to make contact with our school office for a prospectus and enrolment pack.

We have key events ahead this term that you’ll hear more about as the term progresses, to mention a few we have our Mahi Toi celebration day, Garin Day Mass, Winter Sports Tournament week, Vast Dance, and not to forget the much looked forward to School Ball.

We are heading into the business end of the year for our senior students as they focus on internal assessments and preparation for exam week in week 1 term 4. This term is a critical term educationally, and it is an important term for all of us to really focus on teaching and learning. This particularly applies to seniors - the weeks ahead this term are precious. Maximise your time, your engagement with your teachers, and stick to a plan to support your learning and your well being. I wish all students an engaging and successful term.

In week 3 year 9 - 12 students will get underway with their course selection for 2021, I encourage parents and caregivers to engage in conversations with your children about their plans for the future and the subject choices they are to make.

It is with much respect I advise you that the Garin College Board of Trustees has accepted the resignation of Deputy Principal Mr Tracy Stock. Tracy is a foundation staff member of Garin College and has provided outstanding dedicated service throughout his 18 years as Teacher, Head of Faculty, Assistant Principal and Deputy Principal. Tracy continues to lead the College as Deputy Principal through to the end of term three, from where he will seek new experiences and opportunities.

Whilst we remain in COVID-19 Alert Level 1, It is important that we continue to monitor the health and wellbeing of our students. If your student is unwell or displaying flu-like symptoms (cough, fever, sore throat, runny nose, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, temporary loss of smell) please keep them at home. If a student presents to the office unwell, parents/caregivers will be informed immediately and asked for their student/s to be picked up from school as soon as possible. If any family member is exposed to COVID-19, we ask that you please contact the school office.

May we be blessed with the strength and compassion of God’s love as we journey through the challenges, successes and events of Term 3 as a school community.

God Bless. Ngā mihi nui

Ready to Learn @ Garin College This term we are working in partnership with Garin learners to focus on being ready to learn. We are looking at how your son/ daughter can be active participants in their learning. Not simply sitting there being passive and a bystander - school is something done to them. Ready to learn is about shifting the ownership of learning from teachers to Garin learners, enabling students to have the understanding, ability, and opportunity to be part of the learning design and to take action to intervene in the learning process, to affect outcomes and become powerful lifelong learners. The attributes & behaviours we are setting in our classes are:

Be on time to class

Bring a charged device and charger

Bring a writing utensil and paper

One device at a time

Ask first before using phones

Engage in your learning

Wear the correct uniform

Survey - Your perspective on Online Learning

At Garin College motto is 'faith & wisdom”. The recent rāhui has led us to consider the learning opportunities and challenges our rangitahi faced during the lockdown, and to think about those changes we may wish to hold onto. As a College we are very interested in hearing views from our whānau and community on learning and your experiences during the Covid-19 rāhui. We know we saw some really interesting and valuable learning occurring, and we are keen to know what you thought, felt, saw and experienced as parents. We want to try and learn from those experiences, so your feedback is important. One great piece of learning was: "As we go back to 'normal', let's decide what parts of normal we want to go back to." Thinking about what learning in the future may look like at Garin College, we would like to ask for your help in deciding which parts of rāhui and our pre Covid-19 style of learning we want to hold onto and which parts we need to move on from. Please follow this link and complete the short survey: https://forms.gle/Ln6v321NSzVjhKtA9

If you would like to forward any additional thoughts to me, please don't hesitate to be in contact. Ngā mihi mahana Jeremy Cumming

Teaching & Learning @ Garin College Reader Writers Required for Garin College

Garin College is seeking volunteers to help us out by being a reader/writer for NCEA Exams to help Garin learners who need support to complete assessment tasks. These are being held in early October (Garin College practice exams) and November - December NCEA Exams. If anyone is interested, could they please contact Rachel Cookson [email protected] to discuss further. Reader-writers need to have a reasonable level of literacy and numeracy (spelling isn't assessed!) and to complete a police check as they are working with young people. This is a legal requirement for us.

Exams are usually between 9:00am and 3:30pm. Training will be provided.

Garin College Practice Exam

Garin College practice exams have been moved to Monday 12th October - Friday 16th October

in Week One of Term Four.

Changes to NCEA for 2020

NZQA will implement three key changes for 2020:

(1) Students working towards an NCEA can gain additional credits, based on the number of credits they achieve during the 2020 school year. For every 5 credits a student achieves towards their NCEA through internal or external assessment, they can be awarded an additional 1 credit. Students at NCEA Level 1 are eligible for up to a maximum of 10 additional credits while those at Levels 2 and 3 are eligible for up to a maximum of 8 additional credits. These will be known as Learning Recognition (LR) credits. (2) Students will be awarded a certificate endorsement if they achieve 46 credits at Merit or Excellence level, rather than the usual 50. Students achieving 12 credits at Merit or Excellence level in a course – rather than 14 – will be awarded a course endorsement. (3) Current UE requirements have been reduced to 12 credits in three UE-approved subjects, from 14 credits in three approved subjects. Students still need to attain NCEA Level 3 and meet the literacy and numeracy requirement to be awarded University Entrance.

This Sunday is the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time:

1 Kings 3:5,7-12 Psalm 119 Romans 8:28-30 Matthew 13:44-46 Have you got something that is very precious to you? It might be something that isn’t very important to anyone else, but is very special to you. Would you be willing to give it away or swap it? When you treasure something a lot, you usually are very careful with it. Where do people usually keep their treasures? Jesus explains to us that God’s kingdom is like a priceless treasure that people would give their most precious possessions for. Psalm 119: You, Lord, are my choice, and I will obey you. I would rather obey you than to have a thousand pieces of silver and gold. Your laws mean more to me than the finest gold. I will follow all of your commands.

“Faith Facts" week 1- Term 3

Snippets from Year 11 assignments: Catholic Ethical Principles as they apply to the issue of Racism. The most important of the Ten Commandments - ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your body, soul, heart and mind. You shall love your neighbour as yourself’. In terms of Racism, this could relate to loving and respecting people around you the way you treat yourself, as well as the way you would want to be treated regardless of the skin tone of that person. We should love the people around us equally and fairly, which means not looking down, giving less love or taking away the rights of others based on their cultural beliefs and ethnicity.
