Term 4 Week 9 2014

This week our secondary students have been discovering the delights of the Queensland Sunshine Coast. Our trip as planned by Mr Odgers, has included a great balance of physical activities, excursions into the natural world and some activities that are simply based on presenting students with challenges so as to build overall resilience and confidence. This morning for example we walked through the rainforest and then followed up with a trip to Aussieworld where the kids had to bite the bullet and engage in "safe-risk taking" challenges. I did not know our kids could scream so loud......and for so long. The whole place knew that the Colly kids were in town, that's for sure! You would have been so proud of the children as they have accepted every challenge and been gracious and polite at all times. They are a credit to their families and will have lots of stories to tell, so get yourself a cuppa and encourage the kids to tell you what has happened for them over the week Dr Paul Brock who works in research within the DEC interestingly ran an article this week for all Principals on this very topic. A planned approach to building positive

individuals who have a confident approach to life and accessing the world, is a fantastic adjunct to purely academic programs in schools. I guess he is saying that attitude is everything and that if you "think you

can......you probably will!". This is why our teachers K-12 support the excursion programs so strongly and I do appreciate the significant work that has been put in by both the Primary and Secondary teams this year to make it all happen. Again, as I have said before, these tasks are taken on by teachers "over and above" their regular duties and our school would not function as it does were it not for this goodwill. The teachers on the actual excursions and those who keep things going back at school, all make a special and valued contribution. Thankyou teachers and thankyou kids and families. Please keep your calendar open for the upcoming Year 6 Farewell Dinner and then Presentation night which will be on us quicker than we know it. Kind regards, Rob Malcolm

SECONDARY REPORT

Mrs. Judy campbell

HEAD TEACHER SECONDARY STUDIES

(REL.)

The secondary school has been very quiet with almost everyone away having a great time in Queensland.

For the last couple of days many students and staff were very busy helping to prepare for the excursion. It was particularly good to see the responsible attitude of students pitching in to clean buses and to help with the packing.

Student assessments for Years 7 to 10 have been finished and reports are now being finalised ready to hand out at the end of term.

The Year 11 students are working though the first term of their HSC studies and have started on the first round of the HSC Assessment Tasks that are so important for their HSC. Careful time management is really important for senior students to successfully juggle their family responsibilities and paid work commitments, their school work, sport and social lives.

Mrs Medhurst has been very creative with her Food classes. They have been making novelty cakes and Christmas festive food.

Ms Moyes and her English classes have been busy preparing items for the end of the year celebrations. We look forward to seeing what they have created.

The Year 6 students had a Transition Day of ‘Taster ‘classes of their secondary courses. Students were all actively involved in their classes and showed a real readiness for high school. The secondary teachers are looking forward to the arrival of the new Year 7 students next year.

7/8 Mandatory Technology

Mrs Medhurst

During this term students in 7/8 mandatory technology have been studying a graphics unit. We have been looking at 2D shapes, rendering, 3D shapes and perspective drawing. Students made up a pattern to construct a ginger bread house. Over a few weeks with lots of icing students have completed a fully decorated ginger bread house. I think they even put some of the lollies on the house and not in their mouths. I have included a sample of their work below. Awesome work 7/8!

Lachrista Barden Teyte and Cordet Chown

9/10 Food Technology

Students in 9/10 food technology class have been studying food for special occasions. One of the course requirements for this class is to look at work flow and patterns. To more fully understand how this works we worked as a class to make a thanksgiving dinner. The young ladies each had to prepare a special dish. This dish was added to a decorated table. Students and a few staff members sat up together and shared what they are thankful for and ate a special meal together. The young ladies produced some outstanding work and had loads of fun doing it. The students in this class have shown significant progress this year and have developed some brilliant skills. Well done ladies!

Cheers Mrs Jay Medhurst

Attendance

A huge congratulations must go to all primary students and families. Our current attendance rate for the entire year is at 85%. This is the state target and all staff in Primary are very proud of the students and what they have achieved.

Primary Reports

Over the last week Ms Hynch and I have had the pleasure of reading the Primary reports. We are very proud of what the students have achieved this year and I am sure you are all looking forward to reading their reports. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher via the front office.

Literacy and Numeracy

Teachers are in their final stages of collecting Literacy and Numeracy data for the year. The results this year have been amazing and it is a credit to the students we teach everyday and the hardwork the teaching staff. The data is used to transition students between classes and compare our data with state data.

Presentation Night

Primary students have been busy working on their presentation night performances and they are looking fantastic. They are very excited to show you on Presentation Night (16th December).

Kindergarten Transition

Transition to Kindergarten is well underway with Ms Arndell. The students have settled in very quickly to school routines and are enjoying the class activities. Students next week will stay for the full school day (8:50am – 3:05pm). Thank you to Preschool staff and parents for the ongoing support of our transition program.

Primary Report

Leanne Shephard

Instructional leader

Primary students and staff in Primary have been very busy the last couple of weeks. Students last week finished their 2 weeks of intensive swimming and did a fantastic job down at the pool learning to become more confident swimmers. Thank you to Miss Faint for running the swimming program and thank you to classroom teachers and tutors (Miss Arndell, Ms Hynch, Ms Dumas, Mrs Raffie, Mrs Zell, Dolly, Linda, Pauline and Dustin) for supporting your students and program down at the pool.

Opening of the Garden

In Week 5 Primary hosted the official opening the Garden located outside the Kinder/Year 1 room. There are many people to thank including all special guests, Ace and Terri-Lee for providing a school captains address, Mrs Medhurst and her secondary food technology students for cooking delicious food for the guests, staff and students and finally Ms Hynch and Anton for their ongoing maintenance and care of the gardens.
