Coleshill Centre, Wellbeing Regeneration Centre and iSmooth Community Café from Carmarthenshire; South Wales Miners’ Museum, Digital Accessibility Centre, Sarn Helen Preserves, Care & Repair NPT and Organised KAOS from Neath Port Talbot. Jane Lewis, Collaborative Communities project manager, said: “The day was a great success and proved popular by those who attended, from the small budding Social Enterprises to the more established organisations. ”It was a great opportunity for the social enterprise community to come together, network, listen to these inspirational speakers and take part in a number of different workshops.” A special 4-page picture special to capture the event can be seen in this edition. More pictures can be viewed on our website, along with videos of the day, including all the workshops. Visit www.collaborativecommunities.org.uk. MORE than 100 people have attended a free event for social enterprises in South West Wales. Delegates from across Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea attended the one-day conference at Parc y Scarlets, Llanelli. Speaking at the event, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Executive Board Member for Regeneration and Leisure, Councillor Meryl Gravell, said: “What I hope this conference brings is the help needed by some organisations to become more sustainable in the future. “The aim of this conference is two-fold: to meet the demands of groups Collaborative Communities is currently working with, by offering high quality speakers and workshops on topics groups feel they need to improve their organisations. “It’s also a chance to showcase the project and to promote how Collaborative Communities can help other organisations.”
Keynote speakers were Nigel Kershaw OBE, Chief Executive of Big Issue Invest and Group Chairman of The Big Issue Company. During his speech Nigel revealed he has links with Llanelli as his mother was born in the town. Afternoon guest speaker was Robert Ashton ‘the barefoot entrepreneur’. Workshops included ‘7 Steps to Social Enterprise’ by Robert Ashton, ‘A Guide to Branding’ by Yvonne Fuchs, ‘Making the Most out of Social Media’ by Robert Lloyd and ‘Let’s Get Creative’ by Prith Biant. Twenty trade-stands were set up by successful social enterprises across the four counties which have received assistance from the Collaborative Communities project. They included: SPAN Arts, Clynfyw Care Farm CIC, Narberth and District Sports & Community Association and Pembroke Dock Sunderland Trust from Pembrokeshire; RSPCA Llys Nini, Swansea Tennis Centre, Forest School SNPT, Play Right and Penllergare Trust from Swansea; Myddfai Trading Company, Cyfle i Dyfu,
LUCKY FAN WINS CONFERENCE RUGBY TICKETS
CHRISTMAS came early for one lucky conference delegate. Karen Butler from Age Concern Pembrokeshire was overjoyed when she received a phone call to say her name had been pulled out of the draw to win a family ticket for 4 people to a Scarlets game of her choice. All those who handed in their
evaluation forms after the conference were put into a
draw to be in with a chance to win the top prize, kindly
donated by Parc y Scarlets. After being presented with her voucher by Jane Lewis, Collaborative Communities project manager, Karen said: “I was just over the moon when I was told I’d won, I couldn’t believe it. My son and husband are Scarlets fans and they were thrilled when I told them I’d won the tickets. My son’s already planning which game to see.”

RECEIVING funding from the Targeted Finance Package (TFP) will make 2013 an exciting year for Play Right, the Play Association for Swansea & Neath Port Talbot. As well as the Play Resource Centre (PRC), Play Right run community play projects, offer training and work strategically to improve play, recreational and educational opportunities for all children and young people living across the region. Play Right’s award of £29,187 from the TFP will go towards funding a full-time Play Resource coordinator, office expenses, advertising and
project is aiming to be financially self-sustaining, rather than a community service, reliant on grants.” Speaking on the process of applying for TFP funding Becky said the support provided by the Collaborative Communities officer has proved invaluable throughout the whole application process. She added: “This is a helpful process for organisations. It took a while to get all the information together, but the process really supported us to consolidate our ideas, and plan for the future. “The TFP application process has formed a true business focus for the first time. It’s
been a good process for us and has given us a clear focus. We now have a business plan with a very clear vision, it is unlikely that we would have had a reviewed business and trading plan in place by this point, were it not for the TFP application. The time and support given to us by our local officer was extremely useful. Having this level of support for such a detailed application process really helped.” Play Right was formed out of the West Glamorgan Play Association in 1999, when funding was granted from the Welsh Government.

SETTING up a ‘charity shop with a difference’ has opened up a whole new world for one Pembrokeshire organisation. In a bid to become more sustainable, Age Concern Pembrokeshire has set up three income generating activities within a Social Enterprise model: ‘A Work of Art’, an art gallery in the centre of Haverfordwest; Home Support Service (HSS) offering practical domestic support and a basic Nail Cutting Service (NCS) following the withdrawal of the service formerly provided by Hywel Dda Health Board’s Podiatry service. Funding from the Targeted
Finance Package (TFP) of £38,377 will go towards funding the post of a full-time Social Enterprise Development Officer and a part-time Social Enterprise Administration Officer for 12 months. The funding will also go towards marketing and promotional materials. The art gallery builds on the experience of organising an annual two week art and craft exhibition in the town library for 20 years. It generates income through commission on sales and activities within the gallery. Chief Officer of Age Concern Pembrokeshire, Jane Slade, said: “This funding has
enabled us to have a dedicated post to develop the social enterprise arm within the organisation. The project will also review recruitment practice and deployment of staff and volunteers engaged within these activities, to ensure sufficient human resources are in the right place, at the right time within the county to meet the increased demand created

need some help and advice to get started?
Our dedicated team have a wealth of experience and are committed to working
with organisations and providing all the support needed to move away from
grant dependency.
To date Collaborative Communities has supported more than 500 organisations;
created more than 42 jobs and 7 Social Enterprises; supported organisations
draw down over £2 million and financially supported 29 organisations with

The Collaborative Communities project runs until December 2013.
What are your hobbies or
interests?
Walking - daily exercise with our dog
Meg and longer distance routes when
on holiday. I also enjoy horse riding
and my indoor interest is local history
research. I have been working on oral
history projects for the past seven
years. This has resulted in some
great material for community history
exhibitions.
What one item could you
not live without and why?
Walking boots! They last a long time
and provide hours of enjoyable
exercise.
What CD are you playing in
your car at the moment?
I use driving time to check recordings
for audio editing so I am currently
listening to the recollections of a 92
year old lady - it is a great way of
learning more about my home county
of Pembrokeshire.
Welcome to our ‘Clecs

In this edition we catch up
with Wendy Marmara,
Sustainable Organisation
Development Officer
based in PAVS.
Would you rather be a
candidate on ‘The
Apprentice’ or pitch an idea
on ‘Dragons’ Den’ and why?
Dragons’ Den – I admire people who
are passionate about an idea and are
determined to make it a reality.
Which celebrity icon
(past or present) would you
like to invite to a dinner
party and why? David Attenborough – his
interpretation of wildlife and animal
behaviour has brought a whole new
world to the television viewer – a truly
inspirational octogenarian.
What is your favourite part
about being a Collaborative
Team member?
Supporting groups to explore and
‘grow’ an idea, developing it into a
fully fledged project - even better if it
becomes a self supporting social
enterprise!
