Birthdays were the theme when Girl Scouts from the Compass Rose Service Unit held a skating party at Champions Rollerworld in Spring in October. The occasion was Girl Scout founder Juliette Low’s birthday. Approximately 200 girls from Sampson, Black and Farney Elementary schools and Goodson and Spillane Middle Schools skated in celebration.
In honor of Low’s memory and in the spirit of scouting, the Girl Scout troops assembled nearly 50 birthday boxes that were donated to Cy-Hope Hope Centers. Birthday boxes contain everything a parent might need to throw a fun birthday party: decorations, cake mixes, candles, paper goods and party favors.
Girl Scouting strives to build girls of courage, confidence and character. The girls of Compass Rose have shown that they are indeed making the world a better place. For more information about Girl Scouts, contact [email protected].

COLES CONNECTIONTis the season for rejoicing in shining fashion! Our choir family
had a wonderful opportunity to shine with it’s A Capella choir on October 30th. Several choirs in the state of Texas were in attendance at Sam Houston State University in their Performing Arts Center for an imitational concert. Each choir had it’s own unique style and the evening was topped off by the college choirs delightful pieces. The solos and accompanists were an impressive touch and the crowd pleasing show closer was Queen’s ‘Somebody to Love’. It was an honor to be invited and we thank SHSU director Mr. Franklin for including our choir in this program.
The women’s PJ party was a big success! Who doesn’t love hanging out with their besties in their comfy PJ’s? We thank Becks Prime for their generous donation, which allowed the girls to feast upon guacamole and salsa to their hearts content! The men’s lock in was equally a great bonding experience. Chips and queso disappeared like magic! Thanks to the parents that helped by sending in snack foods, treats, and their warm personalities as chaperones for our young men and women. WE LOVE OUR PARENT VOLUNTEERS!
Our students push themselves vocally by competing against the finest high school singers as they attempt to move towards the Texas State choir. At this point in time, we would like to recognize those members that have joined the Regional choir. Trevor Reagor, Grace Bracher, Diana Luu, Taylor Shaunfield, and Scott Johnson. Making Regional and moving on to Pre Area auditions are: Katie Ferrigan, Abi Amadin, Marguerite Lavin, Sarah McIntyre, Elyse White, Tate Brown, Evan Moynihan, John Rooney, Tyler Denton, Brandon Zachary, Lauren Lafferty, Jordan Svehla, Venessa Clarke, Alicia McCormick, Thomas Kang, and Ronald Pabello. WAY TO GO EAGLES!!! Outstanding job, congratulations!
Our year will culminate in a vocal extravaganza for the holiday season. The holiday concert will be December 11th in the school auditorium. Traditional Christmas will be the theme of affair, and our students look so wonderful in their gowns and tuxedos. This delight for the soul in sound is one concert you won’t want to miss. Mark your calendars now and plan to attend. We assure that you will return to the season uplifted with a song in your heart! Have a blessed season, enjoy those you love, treasure your moments and we will see you next year!

State and local officials stressed the need for partnerships in regards to transportation projects during the 5th Annual Mobility Forum hosted by the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce and underwritten by Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. “It’s about finding solutions together, because TxDOT doesn’t have all the answers, and it certainly doesn’t have all the money,” said Phil Wilson, TxDOT executive director. “Neither does your local county [or toll road authority], but together we can find critical key needs and leverage our resources together by utilizing toll roads and design-build programs. We can move projects forward in a faster, smarter and more efficient way.”
George Greanias, CEO of the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, also discussed the benefits of partnerships during a speaker’s panel presentation. “With Hwy. 290, if we don’t coordinate, we won’t get the optimum use out of that corridor,” he said.
During the keynote speech, Wilson spoke about the challenges TxDOT faces in keeping up with population growth in Texas during a time when 1,200 people move to the state everyday. The gas tax, which has remained the same at 20 cents per gallon since 1991, is TxDOT’s main source of revenue. After deductions, TxDOT has about 11 cents left over to use for infrastructure. “That 11 cents in 1991 bought a very different amount than it does in 2012,” Wilson said.
The future of high-speed rail in Texas also came up during a presentation by Seth Moulton, managing director of Texas Central Railway, a private company attempting to build a line between Dallas and Houston that would get riders between the two cities in 90 minutes traveling at 205 mph. In Japan, the average delay for a high-speed rail trail is 30 seconds, and in Spain travelers receive a full refund if a high-speed train is five minutes late,

5th Annual Mobility ForumMoulton said.
“If you think about what we’re used to in America for travel times, things could be a lot better,” he said. Texas Central Railway is working on an investment grade ridership survey and focusing on what type of stations would be best for the project: downtown, suburban or dual-station. “This has really important implications for real estate development because often times there are more development opportunities around the stations when you do something outside the city,” Moulton said. The dual-station model could be a possibility in an area like Houston, which has a lot of growth outside the city.
“If you look at the potential commuter rail system for Houston, six of the seven lines go north or west of the city,” Moulton said. “Since we
are coming in from the north, there are a lot of options because there’s a lot of growth and development out here. The dual-station model might make a lot of sense.”
Moulton said the project will most likely be privately financed, and the company hopes to have it running by 2021. “We were pleased to have so many transportation experts update us on what is going in the Cy-Fair area, said Leslie Martone, president of the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce. “We had great participation from our membership and the community and we are looking forward to our continued partnerships to meet the future needs of our growing community.”
The Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce (www.cyfairchamber.com) has provided leadership and direction to the Cy-Fair area since 1986. Now over 600 members strong, the Board of Directors and numerous committees interact on state and local levels to help build a strong economy and improve the quality of life within the Cy-Fair area.

COLES CONNECTION
Another lovely autumn season is upon us and with it, the dread of flu season, allergies, and then winter colds! It seems to repeat every year. As a physician, it’s my passion and honor to help patients heal in times of illness; however my deeper hope is to see them far less frequently due to an acute case of wellness. After all . . . I am a son, brother, husband, and father encouraging my own family to cultivate a harvest of wellness by the simple act of setting an intention for optimal health.
By embracing wellness as a strategy, it’s easy to make healthy lifestyle choices that taste great, feel even better, and keep you out of my office! Remember the added bonus is that your children will follow your lead, so be a healthy role model.
A healthy lifestyle should be complimentary, not complicated. It should include whatever exercise you enjoy on a regular basis. Exercise doesn’t have to be a sport, exhausting, or expensive. Try a variety of activities that can involve the entire family like joining the YMCA, weight lifting, taking walks together, hiking, yoga, rock climbing or whatever motivates you to move.
Please eat whole foods (you enjoy) on a daily basis, because diet/nutrition is truly the cornerstone of good health – and that is not an over statement. Fill your plate with a colorful banquet of fresh vegetables, fruit, and small portions of meat. Your body will respond and love you back. We all know clean drinking water is vital to optimal health, and those of you who enjoy alcoholic beverages should always do so in moderation.
Research shows us that connecting often with friends and family leads to longevity, and of course — get plenty of quality sleep.
Healthy living is not a new concept folks, yet it truly is powerful medicine. Young or old . . . encourage your family to set an intention to maintain optimal health. Be the one to help them cultivate a harvest of wellness this year and I’ll be glad to see you next year in my office for your annual wellness checkup.Dr. Lewis is licensed by the State of Texas and has been practicing
