What is a Thermal Image?

Radiated infrared energy (not temperature!)

Detected by camera at the target’s surface

Different colour schemes or “palettes” are used to show the amount of energy detected

March 15 2016 Page 5 © ScanTherm 2016

What do the colours mean?

But take care!

Why Use Thermal Imaging?

Thermal imaging of buildings is used for many reasons including VISUALISING & DIAGNOSING:

1. HEAT FLOW

2. MOISTURE

3. STRUCTURE and sub-surface components/ systems

4. MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL systems

Goals of Scanning Building Fabric

Typically – to assess:

Continuity of insulation

Absence of thermal bridges

Absence of excessive air leakage

But also:

Absence of excess moisture a.k.a “damp”

Usage and Behaviour

Simplistically...

Heat flow through fabric is a function of conductivity of

structural materials

Goals of Scanning Building Systems

Systems include:

Electrical

Mechanical

Plumbing

Heating and air conditioning

Solar

To assess:

Heat Loss Survey – Hall of Residence

March 15 2016 © ScanTherm 2016 Page 25

Question: When is this type of survey conducted?

Answer: During heating season... before dawn

Very specifically:

Nov 26th 05.45 hours External temp: 4˚C

Thermography Benefits

Save Energy!

Improve Quality Visualise the invisible

Move from “as designed” to “as built” to “as used” and “as maintained”

Save Money Less destructive work, early detection, less access equipment

Communicate Very visual medium

Change behaviour!!

Improve Sustainability Verify thermal performance, BREEAM
