Sustainability

CSR has long been committed to managing its impact on the environment and the communities in which it operates. This commitment is characterised by the production of environmentally responsible building products and services and by pursuing initiatives including waste recycling, water conservation and reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Gyprock™ is committed to sustainable manufacturing processes for its products and systems and operates to measurable targets for waste reduction, water and energy consumption.

Gyprock™ plasterboard products are manufactured from gypsum, paper and a small amount of additives. Gypsum is a naturally occurring, non-toxic sedimentary rock. The paper liner board used for plasterboard and cornice is made from 100% recycled newspapers and cartons and the additives are benign materials such as starch and foam.

The energy used in the manufacture of Gyprock™ is amongst the lowest of any building product1. Emissions are limited to water vapour and products of natural gas consumption.

Waste Management and Recycling Gyprock™ recycles more than 95% of its manufacturing waste either back into the production process or through conversion to by-products such as soil conditioners for the agricultural industry.

Also, for over 10 years, Gyprock™ has supported a plasterboard reclamation service in the major residential building markets along the eastern seaboard. This service is now being extended to the commercial building market in some states.

Introduction to THE RED BOOK™

Green Building Systems AddendumThe Gyprock™ and Cemintel™ Fibre Cement Fire and Acoustic Design Guide – The RED BOOK™ is a well respected construction industry reference manual which provides a ready reference to the performance of an extensive range of Gyprock™ and Cemintel™ Fibre Cement fire and acoustic wall ceiling and column/beam systems. This addendum should be read in conjunction with THE RED BOOK™

The growth in recent years of more sustainable development, the Green Building Council Australia and Green Star ratings for buildings has fuelled the demand for more environmentally responsible building materials.

In the plasterboard market, Gyprock™ has led the way with reCore™ technology and the Gyprock EC08™ range of Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) certified plasterboards.

This addendum provides the performance details on a suite of green building systems for walls and ceilings. Fire, acoustic and structural testing has been carried out for all Gyprock™ and Cemintel™ products as well as those of Bradford Insulation, Hebel® and Rondo® building products. To complement this extensive

testing program, Gyprock™ has obtained certified assessments from appropriate authorities on the likely performance of some systems. These assessments are based on test results and expert opinion.

Gyprock™ fire rated systems have been tested or assessed to AS1530.4 : 1990 or 1997 at approved testing laboratories. Test reports and assessments are available on request.

Gyprock™ has developed systems with ‘Fire Resistance Levels’ (FRL) up to –/180/180 (3 hours). The systems and performance specifications detailed in this manual are guaranteed only for the construction specified. Any variation or substitution of materials or assembly requirements, or any compromise in assembly may result in failure under critical conditions. It is recommended that only accredited plasterboard fixers install fire rated systems.

CSR is continuously developing its products, which may result in changes to product specifications, range and performance. The systems and products in this Fire and Acoustic Design Guide addendum are current at the publication date.

CSR Lightweight Systems manufactures and supplies a diverse range of plasterboard and fibre cement sheets, acoustic panels and accessories to suit a multitude of wall, ceiling and encasement applications.

The Gyprock EC08™ range of plasterboard has been developed using Gyprock’s reCore™ technology which

Impact Resistance

Gyprock EC08™ Fire and Partition provide adequate resistance to soft body impacts likely in domestic or commercial use respectively.

Walls lined with Gyprock EC08™ Fire and EC08™

Fire Hazard Properties

The BCA limits the materials used in Class 2 to 9 buildings by controlling the Fire Hazard properties of linings. These properties are assessed using AS/ISO9705 Room Burn test or AS/NZS3837 The Cone Calorimeter test. The room burn test is a large scale test to determine SMOGRARC and the cone calorimeter test is a small scale test to determine a Group Number.

Please refer to Table 2 for Gyprock EC08™ plasterboard and Cemintel™ fibre cement product performance details.

Fire TestingFire resistance testing is conducted to the Australian Standard AS1530 – Part 4 ‘Fire Resistance Tests of Elements of Building Construction’.

This standard gives the test method and criteria of failure for the various elements of construction such as partition walls, floor/ceilings and roof/ceilings.

The specimen assemblies are built into the test furnace and subjected to furnace temperatures in accordance with AS1530.4 ‘Standard Time vs Temperature Curve’.

How The Specimen is Assessed

The test specimen is heated in the prescribed manner until the failure criteria has been reached, or terminated by agreement between parties.

Assessment criteria are represented by three performance measurements known as ‘Fire Resistance Levels’

• Structural Adequacy – failure accurs when the specimen collapses under load

• Integrity – Failure accurs when the specimen develops cracks or openings through which flames or hot gasses can pass

• Insulation – Failure occurs when the average temperature of the unexposed surface of the specimen increases by more than 140º above the initial temperature, or the temperature at any point of the unexposed surface increases by more that 180º above the initial temperature

The test performance of the specimen is expressed as a ‘Fire Resistance Level’, which indicates the number of minutes for which the specimen fulfils the requirements of the three test criteria.

These numbers are then rounded down to the nearest regulatory requirement.

The common regulatory ‘FRL’ requirements are:

For example: -/120/120

•The dash indicates no requirement fro ‘Structural Adequacy’, which applies to all non-loadbearing systems.

• The first 120 indicates ‘Integrity’ for 120 minutes• The second 120 indicates ‘Insulation’ for 120

minutes

For any specified FRL, a system having equal or higher respective criteria may be used. Some systems have multiple FRLs stated. FRLs expressed as -/y/z relate to non-loadbearing walls; FRLs expressed as x/y/z relate to loadbearing walls; or FRLs expressed as x/y/z* relate to walls with additional design limits.

Other steel components of equivalentperformance may be used, however it is the responsibility of the manufacturer of the component to substantiate equivalent performance with the recommended component.

For detailed information on wall junctions, intersections, frame attachments and penetrations, refer to Section ‘Z’ of The RED BOOK™.

Walls curved in plan may be built with steel stud frames. Selection information on stud centres and plasterboard thickness for various curvatures can be found in brochure NºGYP544, Gyprock™ Steel Frame Wall Systems.

Wallboard & Plasterboard FixingWalls may be built to achieve a particular ‘Level of Finish’ as defined in AS/NZS2589.1. The Level of Finish specified can have requirements for frame alignment, jointing and back blocking methods, and sheet orientation. CeminSeal™ Wallboard and Gyprock™ plasterboard may be installed vertically or horizontally, although for some Levels of Finish horizontal sheeting must be used.

Walls lined with Gyprock™ plasterboard or CeminSeal™ Wallboard may be finished with tiles. For tiles greater than 32kg/m2 or over 6.5mm thickness, specific installation details apply. Refer to the appropriate installation manual.

Plasterboard Jointing & Finishing Refer to the Gyprock® Residential Installation Guide, NºGYP547 and Cemintel™ Wet Area Lining Systems, NºFC101 for detailed jointing and finishing information.

It should be noted that:

•Multi-layeredsystemsonlyrequirejointingandfinishing of the outer layer.

•Itisrecommendedthatawaterresistanttapingcompound, such as Gyprock™ Wet Area Base Coat be used at horizontal and vertical joints within wet areas such as showers.
