Indonesia Faces Vast Challenges In The Implementation of Cogeneration Technology
On the 14th September 2014, with the support of the Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), the International Clean Energy and Sustainability Network (ICESN) attempted to launch Cogen/CHP Asia 2013, Indonesia’s rst attempt to bring acknowledgement and adoption of cogeneration technology.
The aim of the conference was to bring together important stakeholders that own and operate key energy intensive industries and urban buildings in Indonesia, to interact with policy-makers, government ocials and technology providers to increase appreciation for cogeneration’s capabilities within their respective operations. With case-study presentations highlighting key developments and achievements from key companies throughout Indonesia, the conference provided a platform to understand the nancial and environmental impact of cogeneration.

Unfortunately, response to the conference was lukewarm and attendance to the conference was low. There needs to be greater emphasis on increasing the awareness of cogeneration technology in Indonesia and business leaders made to understand the importance of better energy planning now as the country becomes more energy starved. Rising energy prices is just a matter of time in Indonesia, and coupled with rising labor costs, would greatly aect Indonesia’s ability to compete in a rapidly globalizing world.
As a start however, the conference is very important to draw attention to this critical topic. With very high level attendance from VIPs including Amir Baso, Head of Industry and Energy, Government of Indoneisa, and Martje Huatpea, the Director of Energy Conservation from the Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the conference set the tone for the discussion of key challenges that impede the widespread adoption of cogeneration technology and the sharing of successful case studies that can be repeated by all.
Much more needs to be done to drive widespread acceptance and uptake of key cogeneration principles and technologies. Businesses need to understand that the age of waste is over, and businesses need to be more frugal in order to survive the age where consumers and clients are more environmentally conscious, more resource aware and concerned about the legacy that they are leaving behind for their children.
We hope that through continued emphasis on energy conservation, we will be able to bring about greater dialogue between policy makers, industry and stakeholders to foster a better energy future for Indonesia through congeneration, tri-generation, combined heat & power and waste heat recovery.
