COFFEE MARKET OUTLOOK

Uses of Coffee. Coffee is cultivated mainly for consumption as

a beverage. However, coffee has found new uses as

perfume, medicinal drug, wine, beautification among others.

Generally the annual demand for world coffee consumption has been growing at an annual rate of 2.4%.

WORLD PRICES World coffee prices fell in December, 2015 reaching its

second lowest average of the years at 114.63 US cents/lb

The decrease was entirely attributed to the drop in Robustaprices over the course of the month. Global coffee prices gohand in hand with global production in each crop year.

The 2015/2016 crop estimates comes to 143.4 million 60kgbags.

The Directorate has therefore initiated afeasibility study on the use of the Coffee KenyaMark in Germany, the leading importer ofKenyan Coffee.

In the event of a successful research findingswith favorable market entries, Kenya willofficially launch the usage of Kenya coffeeproducts bearing the Coffee Kenya Mark in theperiod of September-December, 2016.

Value addition The future of good coffee prices lies in value addition The potential of domestic market has not been fully exploited The Directorate carried out census of Coffee Houses in November and December

2015 The actual result shows that there are 170 coffee houses spread across the country This is an increase from 14 Coffee Houses in the year 2000.

According to this census about 245, 631 Kgs of coffee is consumed through thecoffee annually.

Statistics for home consumptions, hotels and other outlets like work places is beingworked

There’s need to roast and ground so that our farmers take production from seed tocup or ground coffee.

Value addition Taking control of more steps in processing

coffee provides farmers with extra income.

Farmers could also offer and charge eco-tourism like coffee safaris which is attractive topeople who like the coffee environment.

Coffee payment rates In 2014/2015 the highest cherry payment

rate of Ksh 91.65 was made at Gakuyu-inifactory of Thirikwa Fcs in Kirinyaga County

In the same coffee year the lowest was Ksh7 paid at Iringa factory at Nyachenge Fcs inKisii County
