Codes and conventions of a genre (Hip-hop jazz) A Tribe Called Quest Similar Artists Eric B & Rakim Digable Planets The Roots Representation of the artist: Artists that follow this kind of genre dress in similar ways. A Tribe Called Quest was most famous when they were performing in the 1990’s and the fashion trend was different back then. In the video, the shots are quite slow and many of the shots are of the artists singing or rapping the lyrics. Narrative? With this kind of genre, most of the music videos don’t seem to have many messages or any sort of storyline in them. The story or the message is in the lyrics of the song. Many of the videos are just the artist rapping and showing of their style or conveying their personal image or their life style. The video makes sense, but it doesn’t give much of a message/storyline. Mise-en scene: With this kind of genre it is typical for the artists to be in a city or a rough area of town. It can depend on what the song is about. Most of the time the artist is with a group of his friends or his crew. Iconography: From what I can tell, the artist’s videos consistently seem to be in cities. They try to show their tough side. They don’t have any symbols that convey them. But their attitude is their way of saying who they are. It is consistent throughout their videos. Camera work, editing, effects: The camera work is mostly of the artits themselves when they are rapping. They occasionally have some interesting effects that fit along with the lyrics they are singing. Generally, most of the time the video is quite linier with minimal effects. Most shots seem to be close ups and medium range shots when rapping. Some long range shots to mix things up.
