WHAT IS COPYRIGHT LAW?

• Copyright is a form of protection provided for original works of authorship. This can include literary musical, graphic and audiovisual creations. Copyright basically means the right to copy.

• Copyright infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner.

Strength – The website is very well know and provides programmes, music videos, music ect. Therefore it is clear as to what the copy right law is.

Weakness- This copy right law shown on the website may apply in the U.S another countries which means it may not be the same in the U.K. This can be irrelevant.

WHAT IS COPYRIGHT LAW? When you own the copyright

of a piece of work, it means literally that you have the “right to make copies” of that work. By extension you also have the right to license that work to others who want to use it. It is a form of intellectual property law that protects an original piece of work from being pirated and used without permission of its creator.

Strengths- This has been repeated in many other sources therefore I have established what copy right is.The positive thing with this website is it is very simply defined therefore it’s understandable.

Weaknesses- This does not particularly apply to music videos.

WHAT IS COPYRIGHT LAW?

Copyright laws protect those who work in the creative industries, allowing them to be rewarded fairly and to continue to create music, film and TV programmes. They also apply to downloading, sharing and streaming just as in the world of physical CDs and DVDs. If you make music, film or TV content available to others on a file-sharing network, download from an illegal site, or sell copies without the permission of those who own the copyright, and then you are breaking the law and could face serious penalties.

Strength- Copy right laws protect those who work in creative industries.Copyright law applies to a number of things including music videos. This attempts to stop people from downing, sharing or streaming illegally.People could face seriously penalties if found copyrighting.

Strength- My video will only be played in my class and be on YouTube for a short period of time whilst it is being marked. I have sent an email to the artist whose song I wished to use as she is a small scale artist.Weakness- Some people don’t reply

Copyright holders are generally concerned about two things with regard to use of their music: if it generates profits and if it creates a suitable image.

Strength- In my video I don’t think I created an unsuitable image. It included appropriate footage and wouldn’t make the artist look bad in any way.I can’t profit from my video.Weakness- What I may think is suitable for the video may not be in the artist eyes.

Strength- Very specific that you must ask for permission from to owners of locations or people in charge.

It is important that wherever you plan to film you get permission or notify the appropriate authority. You will also need to make sure you have Public Liability Insurance.It is good practice to inform local police for ALL exterior location filming, and it may be a legal requirement to do so. Other aspects of your script or shoot may also mean you need to get in touch with the police.

Weakness- If you don’t ask will they know? Surely you’d be tempted too.

You must create a release form for the cast in order for them to take part in your music video. This must included their name, when they will be working, what their role will require and any other additional information.

This is straight forward but you must have a plan to let them know about.

There are five areas which may cause offence. You need to satisfy them all in order to not make your video in breach of ofcom.

Masking offensive language before the watershed could work but then don’t the children have access to computers and the videos with the offensive language?

Scheduling of programmes/videos may not make a difference as children will stay awake if they want to but a positive for this is that ofcom have done what they can however its then up to the parents.
