COCPED Video Assessment
The assessment process
• Video assessed by two first level assessors• If both pass the video then the process is
successfully completed• If one REFERs the video then it is assessed
simultaneously by two second level assessors• If they pass the video then again the process is
successful• If they REFER then it is sent out of region to 2
national assessors who again may pass the video but here is where a FAIL is recorded
Registrars tasks
• Identify patient’s reason for attendance• Take appropriate steps to investigate the
problems presented• Organise a suitable management plan• Reach an agreement with the patient on
diagnosis and treatment• Demonstrate an understanding (in the
logbook) of what was going on in the consultation
First level asessment
• Watch at least 6 consultations
• Record errors
• Assess listening
• Assess action
• Assess understanding
• IF for any reason cannot reach a firm decision then result must be refer
Errors
• A single major error on a consultation or several minors should lead to consideration of referral
• Serious error = causes actual / potential harm
• Minor error = inconvenience only
Listening
• Doctor identifies and elucidates reasons for attendance
• A credible / acceptable plan should be negotiated
Action
• Appropriate action to identify patient’s problems
• Reasonable investigations / referrals
• Help sought when necessary
• Patient’s problems should be managed appropriately
Understanding
• GP registrar understands process/outcome of consultation
• Actions explained
• Obvious shortcomings identified and relevant background mentioned
