Can Road Force Balancing really make a difference?

Reprinted from: http://www.tirereview.com/

Car manufacturers have been using road force wheel balancers for decades because

even the best tires are not perfect. It’s done at the factory on every tire/wheel assembly to

create that ever so important new car ride.

So, what does a road force balancer actually do? Road force balancers, in addition to

performing a traditional spin balance, measure both the wheel and tire by pressing a large

roller against the tread of the spinning tire. The roller applies 1,200 to 1,400 pounds of

pressure to simulate the weight of the vehicle on the tire as it rolls down the road.

A computer in the machine, along with various sensors, determines variations of tire

stiffness, radial runout and anything in the tire’s construction (such as inconsistencies in the

belt package) that would prevent the tire from rolling smoothly when it is weighted by the

car. By measuring both the wheel and tire, the road force balancer tells the technician where

to move the tire around on the wheel until the effective high spot of the tire (when it is

rolling on the car) matches the low spot of the wheel – a more sophisticated method of

match mounting.

It’s actually more complicated than that, but for practical purposes, that is what a

road force balancer does. If necessary, in extreme cases, the road force balancer can be used

to run several tires across different wheels to find the best possible wheel and tire

combinations.

Use of a road force balancer can provide consumers with the same level of ride

comfort previously only available to OEMs. An additional benefit to the tire dealer is that

many road force balancers are able to optimize the corrective balance weights, resulting in

considerable (upwards of 30%) savings in the amount of weight used.

Too Much and When? So, when is road force variation balancing useful and when is it overkill? It has become

more useful as aspect ratios have gotten lower. We have changed from a market dominated

by tall tires where the distance from the wheel to the tread was fairly large and relatively

flexible. Today, most tires have a much lower profile. The sidewall is stiffer and the distance

from the rim to the top of the tread is shorter, often much shorter. This means that minor

imperfections will be amplified and more vibration transmitted into the car.

Page 12: COB VETTE NEWS - Corvettes of Buffalo · *Meet and greet on Sat. at Paddock with food vendors *Includes tour of Grand Island * Ends at Antonio’s Restaurant 3. Ads for newsletter

12

CORVETTES of BUFFALO

It can be argued that all drivers can benefit from road force balancing because it is

always helpful to “test drive” the tires before the vehicle gets on the road. Road force

balancing enables the technician to resolve potential vibrations proactively. Realistically not

every customer is going to want to pay extra for it, but it is especially beneficial for drivers of

high-performance vehicles with low-profile tires (45-series and lower).

It can also be a great option when a customer complains about experiencing an

annoying vibration at highway speeds or a continuous shimmy in their steering wheel –

especially after multiple attempts to correct the problem by tire/wheel rebalancing.

Bottom line, road force balancing is likely not for every customer. While it is overkill for

many customers, it is also a very useful tool for extreme low-profile tires or to resolve

persistent vibration problems.

For customers who want the “best,” it is a legitimate premium service, and you should

charge as such.

Caravan of 2019 Corvette ZR1s Headed for Spring Mountain

We’ve seen numerous sightings of small

caravans of 2019 ZR1 Corvettes running

around in the wild, but no sighting has

been as impressive as the ones posted on

Facebook this week as a caravan of

“about 15 to 20” 2019 ZR1 Corvettes

made their way across the central United

States. Charles Johnson, a resident of

Springfield, Missouri, posted the following

on a Facebook page this past Monday

night, “Just spotted these new C7 ZR1’s passing through my hometown, Springfield, MO.

About 15 to 20 parked in a hotel parking lot. The new Z(R1) looks amazing in person! Very

cool to see, indeed!”

The next morning, the same ZR1 caravan

was spotted making its way through

Tulsa, Oklahoma, on I-44, and refueling

at a Phillips 66 as posted on the Car

Spotting Tulsa Facebook page.

It’s reasonable to assume that these 2019

ZR1s were making their way from Bowling

Green, home of the Corvette’s Bowling

Green Assembly Plant, to Spring Mountain

Motorsports Resort in Pahrump, Nevada, just in time for new 2019 Corvette owners to begin

taking advantage of the ZR1 Owners School that will soon be made available there.

While we are waiting for the official details from Spring Mountain about the new ZR1 Owners

School, we do know that the two-day program is included in the purchase price of a new

2019 ZR1 as stated on Chevrolet’s ZR1 site: “Learn all the capabilities of your new

Corvette through the Ron Fellows Performance Driving School at Spring Mountain

Motor Resort and Country Club. This exclusive two-day program is included for

new 2019 ZR1 owners. Developed specifically for the supercar, and managed by

legendary Corvette racer Ron Fellows, you’ll master Corvette technologies and

racing techniques.”

I can only imagine the fun that the Spring Mountain instructors are about to have putting

the all-new 2019 ZR1 through its paces over the next few weeks. I wonder if Spring

Mountain is accepting instructor applications?!

Update: A user named LIStingray on the Corvette Forum posted some more info about the

Spring Mountain caravan:

They had 20 ZR1’s arrive on Wednesday – all driven in.

From what I saw the lowest VIN was 00010 and the highest was 00097.

All were MN7’s and had black interiors – Yellow, Red, White, Admiral Blue, Watkins Gray and

Silver were the only exterior colors.

They are cars for use with the new ZR1 program, and GM’s event at the track next week.

Message from the Clarence Presbyterian Church

To Corvettes of Buffalo Members,

We wanted to let you know that the elevator will not be available for your Saturday

June 9th meeting. We were not sure if there is anyone in your group that would need it, so

we wanted to give you a heads up in advance. We are sorry for the inconvenience this might

cause. Thanks!

Curb Rash Solution

We recently experienced some “curb rash” on two of our Corvette wheels. Knowing that “new” replacements

are rather expensive we found RIM REPAIR by Travis Johnson cell 716-866-8923 to do a remarkable job of

restoring/resurrecting our damaged wheels.

If anyone in the club is looking for a “curb rash” solution we recommend giving Travis a call.

George and Karen Sparks

On another note we have bag of C4 lug nut covers (19) needed one but had to buy 20. Also have

brand new in the sealed box a C4 mass airflow sensor. Not sure what they're worth, but if anyone

would like to purchase either of these items, they can make an offer.

2019 Corvette ZR1 specs confirmed

We've known the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is the most powerful Corvette to ever leave the factory thanks to a 755-horsepower, but now we know what the car can do with that incredible number.

Speaking to Corvette Blogger during this month's 2018 12 Hours of Sebring race, Corvette Product Manager Harlan Charles confirmed some of the new Corvette ZR1's performance specs.

It turns out car will go from 0-60 mph in 2.85 seconds, and it will accomplish the quarter-mile in 10.6 seconds. The quarter-mile time is particularly impressive since the ZR1 is, arguably, a track-focused sports car.

Oh, and Charles added the ZR1 will clock 100 mph in 6.0 seconds flat. The numbers are likely generated with the car's 8-speed automatic.

We also know the car holds the lap record for Virginia International Raceway's Grand Course West, with a time of 2:37.25 set during routine testing earlier this year.

At the heart of the performance specs is a 6.2-liter supercharged LT5 V-8, which makes the aforementioned 755 hp plus 715 pound-feet of torque. Corvette engineers even had a cheeky nickname for the LT5 during development, thanks to the massive supercharger on hand: BAS, or "big ass supercharger." Quite fitting, indeed.

Strangely enough, the Corvette team never planned for a new ZR1 after the C6 Corvette exited production. Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter previously admitted that the focus was on the base Stingray and Z06 models after General Motors exited bankruptcy. Engineers began experimenting with added performance parts and aerodynamics, and (thankfully) the ZR1 was born.

Steering Wheel Hand Position

For those of us who took a driver education course prior to the inclusion of airbags in automobiles (around the 1980's), you probably were taught that the recommended position of your hands was at the ten o'clock and the two o'clock position on the steering wheel. Now, because of the way airbags function when they deploy, there is a new recommended hand position, and that is: the nine o'clock and three o'clock grip. Your thumbs should now be placed along the rim of the wheel instead of looping around it. The reasoning is that in an accident in which the airbags deploy, your hands in the old position could be thrown into your head or even fracture your thumbs. We are now also cautioned not to rest our hands on the wheel hub or grab same in a underhand grip while turning which could result in a broken arm(s) in the event of a collision. It is also said that the recommended grip gives you better control of the vehicle (i.e. race car drivers grip) but others will say that this could be a subject of debate. Bruce Mussehl

CORVETTES of BUFFALO

IT'S THE LAW This issue has been discussed off and on over the years and I wish to "set the record

straight" regarding the display of number license plates on your Corvette or for that

matter any motor vehicle you might register in New York State.

Section 402,subsection 1(a) of the NYS vehicle & traffic law says: No person shall operate,

drive or park a motor vehicle on the public highways of this state unless such vehicle shall

have a distinctive number assigned to it by the commissioner and a set of number plates

issued by the commissioner with a number and other identification matter if any,

corresponding to that of the certificate of registration conspicuously displayed, ONE on

the front and ONE on the rear of such vehicle, each securely fastened so as to prevent the

same from swinging and placed, whenever reasonably possible, not higher than forty-eight

inches and not lower than twelve inches from the ground; provided, however, that in any

registration year for which only one number plate is issued, such number plate shall

constitute a set of number plates for the time such use is authorized, shall be displayed on

the rear of the vehicle and none shall be displayed on its front, except in the case of a

tractor, when such number plate shall be displayed on the front of the vehicle and none

shall be displayed on its rear.

Although many L.E.O.S (law enforcement officers) choose to ignore this section, or at the

very least give you a warning, it could result in a court summons and violation of this

section could be punishable by a fine of not less than twenty-five nor more than two

hundred dollars. Additionally, Section 402(b) of the V&T law reads: Number plates shall

be kept clean and in a condition so as to be easily readable and shall not be covered by

glass or any plastic material, and shall not be knowingly covered or coated with any

artificial or synthetic material or substance that conceals or obscures such number plates

or that distorts a recorded or photographic image of such number plates, and the view of

such number plates shall not be obstructed by any part of the vehicle or by anything

carried thereon, except for a receiver-transmitter issued by a publicly owned tolling

facility in connection with electronic toll collection when such receiver-transmitter is

affixed to the exterior of a vehicle in accordance with mounting instructions provided by

the tolling facility. Your attention is also called to Section 402-a sub1 titled "Facsimile

license plates" which reads: No person shall manufacture, sell, or offer for sale a

decorative or facsimile license plate of a size, shape, color and design of license plates

issued by the department (DMV- department of motor vehicles). Therefore, these plates

would be in direct conflict of the above referenced sections, because they would not have

been issued by the commissioner of motor vehicles I hope this information may be helpful

to you. Revive the wave!

1964 Corvette Restoration----Update #8

Last month I talked about installing the new radio, speaker, clock, and glove box in the dashboard. With that accomplished it is time to install the rugs that are fit formed to help fit in the right position in the floor pan. A trick I used was to put the rug in and lift half of it up and spray the glue on both surfaces and set it down in location. Then I would do the same to the other half. I started with the passenger side, next driver and the rear carpets were installed. Working in an in closed space with the strong glue fumes made me high , but the rugs came out good. The heater duct was next put in place so I could install the center console in place along with the dash side covers. The hard part is to get all the screw holes to match the fasteners so all parts fit together and look good. Steve decided to change the color of the door panels, arm rest and seat to white leather that looked great and broke the interior up with black dash pads and rugs. It took a whole day to put the seats in place, so the car could be driven to the trim shop to install the new white top on the convertible frame. We put the convertible top frame on the car and adjusted it to the door windows so that both hard top and retractable top had the proper fit. The last thing was to install the factory knock off wheels the correct way, so they wouldn't come off when driven. There are 2 LH, and 2 RH adapters that must go on the proper side of the car, plus a list of instructions how to torque the wheels on, so they don't come off when the car driven. Factory Knock off look great on corvettes, but if they unscrew when driving, they will do a lot of damage. At this time the project will stop to have the new convertible top put on at the trim shop. The next article will be the last on this car because it will be finished, and the 1966 comes out of storage to be worked on again. Pete R.

2019 Corvette ZR1 is most powerful pace car in Indy 500 history

The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has been named the official pace car of the 2018 Indianapolis 500, and with 755 horsepower on tap it will be the fastest, most powerful car to ever handle pacing duties in the race's 100-plus-year history.

A blue example of the Corvette flagship will be used for the premiere event of the IndyCar season, which is scheduled for May 27 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It will be fitted with the 2019 ZR1's available eight-speed automatic transmission and ZTK Performance Package, the latter adding the car's high-wing option.

Like all 2019 ZR1s, it will have a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 with the aforementioned 755 horses plus 715 pound-feet of torque. Unique to the pace car however will be an Indy 500 graphics package and safety lights.

This is the 15th time that a Corvette has been assigned pacing duties for the Indy 500 and the 29th time that the car has been a Chevy. The first was in 1948 when a Fleetmaster Six paced the race.

Chevy will also be competing. The Bowtie brand is chasing its seventh consecutive Manufacturers' title in IndyCar, building on a successful 2017 season that saw 10 wins out of 17 races. Last year's Indy 500 winner was Takuma Sato.

This year's race will be televised live on ABC, with the pre-race show starting at 11 a.m. Eastern time. It will also be the final time Danica Patrick takes to a track, at least professionally.

1994 Corvette for Sale Club member Marty Link has a connection that has identified a Vette for sale, reportedly a documented 27,000-mile 1994 Corvette base 350 convertible, automatic, white over red leather with black top. Asking price is $18,000 obo. (He believes after conversation with the seller there is negotiability in the price). Seller information is below. He is not a club member, however, he and his wife have participated in at least one Corvette Caravan. The pictures are not great, (cell phone variety) but you should be able to recognize that this car has been loved on. (Note the great looking driver door gap/top alignments). There are new tires on what looks to be 16” or 17” chrome Torque Thrusts, original wheels also go with the car. Reason for selling has nothing to do with mechanicals of the car. Like many Corvettes it is an “ingress and egress” issue. Contact Michael Forant at cell # 716-207-5370 in the N. Tonawanda, NY area if interested.

SPRING CARLISLE ANTIQUE CAR AUCTION

Eleven Corvettes of Buffalo members traveled to the Spring Carlisle auction to drive cars. Friday, we arrived

to the auction site where we were given instructions on how they wanted us to drive the cars to the auction

block plus sign waivers and be assigned cars to drive. Mike and Lee Buccilli, Skip Polowy, Ken Bushley, Joe

Peluso. Pete Ricigliano, Bob Joseph and Bruce Graham drove cars, Norma Joseph, Bruce & Lynda Graham

and Rosie Ricigliano pushed the cars. All the cars outside were something to be desired. The primo cars where

inside and you only sat in them and then pushed to the auction block. Regarding the cars we drove most

barley ran. Ken had a Rat Rod and was towed up to auction (he should have had a tetanus shot before he got

into and out of the car). Pete drove a full-size T Bird which blew a radiator hose. There was steam and fumes

everywhere that they thought the car was on fire but when cooled it still went up for auction. Skip’s old T Bird

broke down and was towed to auction but his 1929 Model A made it on its own to auction. Bob drove a

beautiful 2013 Camaro all decked out but turned out to be all show no go-6 cylinder with fake gages. Joe

drove a black Z06 which went through twice and did not sell (we think that Joe looked good in it that they

wanted to see him twice LOL). Bruce drove an old Nissan SUV with his blushing bride Lynda next to him. This

car could not get out of its own way. Mike drove a 1979 Trans AM 6.6-liter shaker hood which choked him on

exhaust and fumes and the windows did not work. Lee drove a Buick Road master. It was as bad as it was

long, the motor would diesel and never shut off. They let it run out of gas to stop it. In reality, these where the

worst cars we drove. We did drive some good ones. Rosie was pushing cars and we have it on camera to prove

it. Norma had full control of the auction block traffic. When she said stop you stopped and when told to go

you went. On Saturday we finished early so we took the shuttle to the fair grounds for a couple of hours

before going back to the hotel.

As good Corvette of Buffalo people we found some great restaurants. Thursday, we walked from our hotel

to a Greek Restaurant called the Peppermill. The food was good and the staff very friendly. Friday, we stayed

in Carlisle and ate at Hosses, good food. On our last night we again walked from the hotel to a local restaurant

called Moe’s Bar and Grill (not like ours up here). The food was good and the owner and staff were very

accommodating to all of us. We purchased a Chocolate Peanut Butter pie which we brought back to the hotel

and celebrated Norma and Bob Joseph’s birthdays. Our waitress gave us the plates, napkins, forks and candles

so we could enjoy the pie. We all had so much fun and we have a lot of great driving and pushing experiences.

My side still hurts from laughing so much. This is why we have always recommended doing week-end

trips/events.

Mike and I want to thank all of our drivers and pushers who came with us. We had such a great time, you all

made the trip a lot of fun. Thanks again.

We want to also thank Mike Boyer (he is in the group picture in the safari hat) of the York County Corvette Club for inviting us to join them at the auction.
