APPLICATION OF COATINGS

FIELD&

SHOP

Page 3: Coatings Application

EQUIPMENT Airless Spray Conventional Spray Brush Roller Electrostatic Plural Component HVLP - High Volume / Low Pressure

Page 4: Coatings Application

AIRLESS 30:1 ratio (minimum).

3 gallons per minute output (minimum).

3/8” I.D. material hose (minimum).

Easy clean tips. Higher production rates than conventional

spray. Plural component units

Fixed ratio Variable ratio

SAFETY !! Operates at high pressures.

Page 5: Coatings Application

CONVENTIONAL Dual regulators 3/8” I.D. material hose (minimum)

50’ material hose length (maximum)

Agitator equipped pot for inorganic zinc primers or metallic filled coatings.

Slower than airless but gives better gun control.

Page 6: Coatings Application

ROLLER Nap type and depth dependent on substrate. Phenolic core for solvent based coatings. Two coats may be required to achieve

recommended dry film thickness and hiding.

Don’t over roll. Finished appearance may vary from that

achieved by spray application and from painter to painter and their experience.

Page 7: Coatings Application

BRUSH Natural bristle for solvent based coatings. Synthetic bristle for water based coatings. Two coats may be required to achieve

recommended dry film thickness and hiding.

Do not over brush. Finished appearance may vary from that

achieved by spray application and from painter to painter and their experience.

FIELD APPLICATION Location of equipment

– As near to area to be coated as possible

– Same level

– Recommended hose sizes

– Keep material hose length as short as possible utilize longer air supply lines from compressor

– Be flexible / open to alternative methods

EXAMPLE: High rise construction -- Put equipment / products etc. on the same level or above

FIELD APPLICATION Mixing / Pot Life

Always mix full units / kits Power mix -- 1/2” air or electric drill with a “Jiffy”

or “Jiffler” type mixer Induction time if required (remember outside

environment) New products (100% Solids) have short pot life:

some as short as 15 to 20 secondsHave equipment set up & painter ready to applyHave mixing set up close to work area

FIELD APPLICATION

Environmental Variations Areas to be coated are at the mercy of “Mother

Nature” Monitor conditions continuously Sudden changes may require special mixing and / or

thinning requirements etc. Heaters / dehumidifiers may be required Wind -- overspray / dryspray Federal / State emission and disposal regulations will

vary and must be taken into account

FIELD APPLICATIONHINTS

Utilize the right equipment to do the job READ and UNDERSTAND the product data sheets,

material safety data sheets and specifications. Don’t assume anything !!

Mix only full kits / units with power mixers. A 2 x 4 won’t do the job !!

Be sure you are mixing the correct components together. Many products have similar names / numbers on the materials.

Use recommended thinners only. Incorrect thinners can be the cause of numerous types of failures.

FIELD APPLICATIONHints

Make sure the spray equipment has the correct size hoses, tips, needles, air caps, filters, etc.

When spraying, regardless of airless or conventional, always use the minimal amount of air or fluid pressure required to apply the coating.

Always apply the coatings at the recommended dry film thickness. “More is not always better”

Always apply each coat as soon as the dry to recoat time as shown on the product data sheet is met.

The longer you wait the greater the possibility of contamination

DON’T ASSUME ANYTHING

IF NOT SURE SEEK THE INFORMATION NEEDED

Case histories & documentation estimate that approximately 80% to 90% of all coating failures are

related to the application of the coating.
