COASTAL CAROLINAS HEALTH ALLIANCE & COASTAL CONNECT HEALTH INFORMATION EXCHANGE
We are thrilled to announce that
CCHA’s Regional SANE (Sexual
Assault Nurse Examiner) Training
Program received an Intalere
Member Achievement Award for
C o m m u n i t y I m p a c t a n d
Innovation! Representatives from the
SANE team were invited to attend
Intalere’s 2019 ELEVATE conference in
Denver, CO, to receive the award.
Colleen Mistovich, NHRMC SANE
Coordinator, Jessica McAlear, ED
Coordinator for NHRMC, and I attended
the conference, which was a mix of
educational sessions, vendor shows/
exhibits, networking socials, and an
awards ceremony. Healthcare providers
from all over the country attend this
conference each year to learn more about
healthcare savings, opportunities, and
industry changes.
We share this award with our member
hospitals and their dedicated staff, like
Colleen and Jessica, who have
demonstrated their passion for patient
care by undergoing SANE training. Such
strong regional partnerships will help
sustain this program for years to come,
and CCHA is honored to align with them
in these efforts!
We are also excited to announce that the
SANE Program will be awarded additional
grant funds by the North Carolina
Governor’s Crime Commission to continue
recruiting and training SANEs at member
hospitals through the year 2021. Our goal
is to train 20 Adult SANEs and 12
Pediatric SANEs by the end of that term.
These new grant funds will support
enhancing our current programs,
providing hospitals/providers with updated
supplies, and continuing education for
those nurses who have been previously
trained.
CCHA “SANE” PROGRAM RECEIVES NATIONAL
RECOGNITION FOR IMPACT & INNOVATION
CCHA’s Mobile Simulation
Program (MSP) has recently
collaborated with New
Hanover Medical Group and
Scotland Health Care System
clinics to provide simulation
education and skill refreshers for
annual competencies for their nurses,
medical assistants, and front desk
staff, among others. Our MSP team
facilitates a high-fidelity simulation
Mock Code and a Customer Service
simulation with standardized patients.
In addition, clinic staff cycle through
stations with some of the following
topics: medication administration, vital
s igns, in and out catheters,
phlebotomy, IV insertion, EKG, and
others. The team travels to clinics
throughout the region to provide these
educational opportunities, thereby
increasing utilization of the MSP for
our participating members.

Bruce Kavanaugh of New
Hanover Regional Medical
Center has participated in
CCHA’s Materials Directors
Team for nearly eleven years.
He learned his lesson when he
missed a meeting in 2009 and was
appointed team chair, a position he has
held for the past decade! Bruce has led
this team with compassion and
dedication. During his tenure, the team
has collaborated, shared best (and
worst) practices, provided education,
supported CCHA and Illucient contract
selection and negotiation, and, for the
last three years, he has made me look
good to the students at UNCW taking my
Healthcare Operations Management
class. Through his guest lecturing (and
sharing some good stories) and site
visits, along with internships, he has
influenced UNCW business students as
they consider the health care industry to
start their career the same way he has
led the team of supply chain leaders
from the other facilities. Thank you for
everything, Bruce! Enjoy your well-
deserved retirement!
A NOTE OF GRATITUDE FOR BRUCE KAVANAUGH, CCHA’S LONGEST-SERVING PROJECT TEAM CHAIR
Each year, Coastal Connect
Health Information Exchange
(CCHIE) surveys its connected
users to gauge the value and
usefulness of the patient
information available through the
HIE as well as its tools and functionality.
Responses help our team identify
potential gaps, opportunities for growth,
and new capabilities to explore. We’d like
to share some of the highlights from our
2019 Survey, which had 144 responses:
• 92% of respondents either agreed or
strongly agreed to the statement that
“Using the HIE has improved the
overall efficiency in our practice/
organization by reducing the time I
search for or request information
from another provider entity.”
• Respondents said that HIE access
has impacted the quality and safety
of patient care through improved
care processes, improved care
transitions, improved patient
outcomes, reduced medication
errors, and improved patient
satisfaction.
• One respondent wrote: “CCHIE has
reduced medication errors for our
veterans and helped provide
seamless continuity of care for
patients seeing multiple providers.”

The impact of this

a total of 55 attendees. A post-seminar
survey indicated 100% of the learning
objectives were met and overall value was
provided by the main speaker, Lindsay
Amerine, Director of Pharmacy from UNC
Medical Center.
