ADVERTISING MADE SIMPLE,INVESTING IN A BAD ECONOMY

When the economy heads south, 75% of U.S. companies respond by cutting back, hunkering down, and trying to "tough out" the tough times.

Advertising is the first expense that gets eliminated.

1) Your "share of voice" becomes multiplied as the advertising noise reduces.2) Your "share of mind" is often uncontested for months at a time. During these times your more timid

competitors will fall behind and likely never catch up.Take a look at this graphic.

It´s a summary of the McGraw-Hill Research study of the 1981-82 economic recession in the U.S. The study analyzed 600companies covering 16 different SIC industries. Year one on this graph is 1980. Year six is 1985.

There are TWO really important ADVANTAGES to AGGRESSIVELY ADVERTISING during economic recessions.

Excerpt from "Advertising Made Simple Investing in a Bad Economy" By Chuck McKay From allbusiness.com.

You´ll note that the aggressively competitive companies repre-sented by the black bar had only a slight edge over their competi-tors in the years leading up to the recession.Their sales growth wasin the middle of the pack as the recession hit. But while their com-petitors cut back in year one, or year two, or both, they continued toinvest in getting their message out.

These firms grew nicely during the recession, but the real newshappened in the two years following the end of the economic down-turn.

Two years into the recovery, the competitors who did cut backhad all stalled out at levels the aggressive companies had blownpast during the recession. By the end of 1985 the companies thatdidn´t cut back had grown a whopping 256%.

During the recessionary period 1989-1991 Kraft salad dress-ings, Jiff peanut butter, Bud Lite, Coors Lite, Pizza Hut, and TacoBell were in the aggressive group which increased advertisingexpenditures. Jell-O, Crisco, Hellman´s, Green Giant, McDonalds, and Doritos cut back on advertising during this period. Predictablythe first group had showed growth during the recession rangingfrom 15% to 70%. The second group´s sales dropped 26% to 64%

During our last economic downturn, while aggressive mar-keters such as Proctor and Gamble took advantage of reducedmedia rates to expand their advertising program, K-Mart decided to

decrease advertising during September and October, 2001.The result? K-Mart sales dropped a resounding 5% dur-

ing October. By late fall the company had lost far more in sales thanit had saved in marketing expense.

At least a dozen other studies ranging from 1923 through 1991show nearly identical results. Meldrum & Fewsmith showed in aseries of six studies that, for all post World War II recessions, thosefirms that kept advertising aggressively increased profits as well asgross sales during the recession.

It's important to remember that during a recession consumersdon´t stop buying. They become more selective. They look muchharder for "value" in their purchases. They are going to buy fromsomeone. They're likely to buy from businesses that they know andlike.

Make sure they know you.The more visible you are, the more confidant your customers

and prospects become. The more they are reminded of your legiti-macy and staying power, the more they'll be inclined to believeyou'll be there for them tomorrow.

Remember too that during any period of economic downturnyour best customers become someone else´s best prospects. When you stop inviting them to do business with you, a moreaggressive competitor may become much more attractive.

With three store locations in North County, we have been particularlypleased with the results from advertising in the Coast News. The

company utilizes a special, sophisticated electronic tracking servicethat reports actual readership response to ads through special

phone numbers, and the Coast News consistently shows up as aneffective source for pulling customers into the stores.

*19-0312 Consolidated Supplemental Readership Study The Circulation Verification Council interviewed 431 residents in the primary market areas indicated in publication’s CVC audit report. The purpose was to iden-tify the number of residents who indicate they receive the publication on a regular basis, identify the number of residents who read or look through the publication, and gather readership study information usefulfor advertising purchase decisions. Market statistics estimates appearing in CVC reports are obtained from EASI Software 2009. The population studied consisted of adults age 18 and over, living in households with-in the survey area. Within this area, each household and each adult within the household had a known (or “non-zero”) probability of being selected for the sample. Interviews were conducted solely with pre-desig-nated respondents and no substitutions were permitted. The verification and readership study took place throughout the audit cycle between the hours of 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM and 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Initialinterview attempts were spread evenly across all survey days (i.e., Tuesday through Saturday). A minimum of 250 completed interviews is required with no more than one interview per household. InterviewProcedures: To ensure the highest degree of comparability and to facilitate the auditing process, a standard, consistent, specified list of interview questions was asked. Interviews were conducted by CVC with super-vision, interview training, and monitoring capabilities. Interviews were conducted over a minimum period of four weeks to minimize the impact of weather and/or special news stories. Every effort was made toensure that interviews were assigned randomly by day and that an approximately equal number of interviews were completed on each interviewing day. Where appropriate, data was balanced and/or weighted byZIP code using up-to-date known demographics: gender, age, number of adults in household and ethnicity in those cases where one minority comprised no less than ten percent of the total population.Non?responses to any single question were eliminated from the survey. In all cases, at least six attempts were made to contact all pre-designated respondents. The telephone rang a minimum of six times eachtime a number was dialed before the attempt was classified as a “no answer.” Each number was dialed at different times and, as necessary, on different days. Every effort was made to surmount language, cultural, behavioral and other barriers to a successful interview; and to the extent feasible, callbacks were scheduled on a random basis. At least one callback attempt per respondent was made on a weekend. During theinterview process, no questions were asked prior to the newspaper readership question, with the exception of a qualifying question designed to determine the ZIP code of recipient residence; and general warm-upquestions designed to put the respondent at ease. Warm-up questions did not include any reference to the publication itself or the nature of the study. This study followed recommended guidelines developed inpart from the Advertising Research Foundation (ARF) newspaper readership guidelines. Survey totals may not equal 100% due to rounding. The Circulation Verification Council estimates that all the information inthis survey has a maximum error margin of +/-2.5 (at the 95% confidence level).
