calhoun news HeraldOnce again, the Calhoun softball team

reigned supreme at the 1A State Tournament, as the Warriors won their second consecutive State Title last weekend. A 3-0 victory over the Princeville Princes clinched the cham-pionship win for Calhoun at the Eastside Centre in Peoria.

Victory in the seven-inning championship matchup followed a series of dramatic extra-inning victories in the sectional champion-ship, super-sectional, and state semifinal. Calhoun nabbed the State title by getting several timely hits at key moments and by relying heavily on the pitching talents and grit of junior Grace Baalman.

In the marathon 17-inning State semifi-nal game last Friday, Grace Baalman broke numerous state records by throwing 39 strikeouts in the Warriors’ 4-0 victory over Trico. The feat broke the IHSA state record for most strikeouts in a game and most strikeouts in a State tournament game.

She followed up the record-setting vic-tory with a 16 strikeout three-hitter against Princeville on Saturday, during which she had no walks. She closed out the year by pitching 107 consecutive scoreless innings, and is just over 500 strikeouts away from the career record for a high school pitcher.

Despite the magnitude of Grace Baalman’s victory in the State championship game, both coach Matt Baalman and Grace Baalman expressed that her stuff wasn’t quite as good on Saturday as on Friday.

pike, calhoun consider merging probation offices

By ALEx HEEb

calhoun news-HeraldA plan to consolidate probation offi-

cers in Calhoun and Pike counties was submitted to the Calhoun County Board, Thursday, June 2.

Supporters of the move point to ben-efits to the court system. They say the change would allow for smoother oper-ations in both counties by spreading the workload across multiple individu-als. They also say that consolidation – while maintaining the same number of probation officers in both counties – would save the court system money, which could then be used to increase compensation to increase officer salary and thereby reduce staff turnover.

Those concerned with the move worry that Calhoun will no longer receive a service tailored specifically to its needs, and that consolidation will cost the county a high quality job for minimal benefit. They point out that probation officers would only be pres-ent in Calhoun for two or three days per week.

Currently, Pike County employs

three probation officers, while Calhoun employs only one.

Charles Burch, circuit judge for Calhoun County, and Frank McCartney, his counterpart in Pike County, both spoke before the board in favor of the proposal.

“In thinking about how to fill [the current vacancy] there has been discussion between myself and Mr. McCartney,” Burch said, “about the prospect of merging the probation offices of Calhoun and Pike counties. To pursue this course would require the acquiescence of the Calhoun and Pike county boards to enter into an intergov-ernmental agreement.”

The Pike County Board, he added, had not yet been approached. Burch said the proposal was based on a simi-lar arrangement between Brown and Schuyler counties. According to Burch, the counties split the bill, 61 percent to Schuyler County, and 39 percent to Brown County.

Calhoun would be responsible for about 15 percent of costs under a com-bined system, he added.

“We’re hiring a full-time person to

By ALEx HEEb

calhoun news-HeraldThe Calhoun County Highway

Department is preparing to wrap up a repaving project on County Highway 1.

The $2 million project, which was paid for through a combination of state and federal funds, involved repaving 7.5 miles of the highway from Brussels to the Brussels Ferry landing.

According to Kyle Godar, coun-ty highway engineer, the project is the third and final stage of long-term repaving on the road. Two previous stages, done between Hardin and Brussels, were com-pleted over the past several years.

“You have to repave every so

often,” Godar said, “about every 20 years or so to keep the roads in good condition.”

The decision on when a road should be repaved is based on “engineering judgment,” he added.

At this time, all new asphalt has been laid down, and the final part of the project – re-striping – is cur-rently underway.

Godar said that once the Highway 1 project was complete, county crews will begin oiling and chipping other county roads. Highway 1 is the only highway in the county paved using asphalt; the others all use the oil and chip process, which is cheaper but only practical for lesser used roads.

Cost savings, Godar said, come

polling place consolidations may redraw township lines

By ALEx HEEb

calhoun news-HeraldA proposal before the Calhoun

County Board would consolidate two low-traffic polling places within the county, and in doing so would redraw the lines traditionally used to designate townships within the county.

The proposal, put forward by the Calhoun County Clerk’s Office, would combine Carlin and Crater precincts for the purpose of saving money and reducing the number of total election judges in the county.

“We could combine our election judges,” Rita Hagen, county clerk, said, “We could combine our ballots, and we could have the committee precinct men take on the responsibil-ity of the additional voters in Carlin precinct.”

According to Hagen, Crater pre-cinct has 371 registered voters, while

Carlin precinct has only 95 voters. State statute, she said, dictates that the ideal size for precincts statewide is 600 voters, bringing a merged pre-cinct much closer to guidelines.

Historically, several board mem-bers pointed out, Calhoun had a population of around 7,000 people. Today that figure is closer to 5,000, meaning that each of the county’s eight traditional precincts is serving fewer people on average.

Additionally, Hagen said, there have been long-running difficul-ties in recruiting county precinct committeemen and election judges to work during the polls. Crater Precinct has traditionally been easier to recruit for.

“Everything that is involved with putting a ballot together,” Hagen said, “ballot assignment charts, everything that is involved with put-ting a ballot together – because they

(Continued from A1)“I wasn’t throwing as hard, that’s for

sure,” Grace Baalman said. “I was a little wild, I didn’t have much control. But I still had movement. That was good.”

The pitcher expressed appreciation for the run support that she got from teammates in the championship game.

“It was the first game we’ve finished in seven innings in how long?” Grace Baalman said. “It was nice. It felt short.”

After three games in which no runs were scored until late in the extra innings, the Warriors scored two runs in the fourth inning of Saturday night’s game, and another in the fifth.

“That was a great feeling,” senior Emma Baalman said. “The stress, the nervousness and all that just goes way down and you’re feeling a lot better. Whenever you’re happy, you play a lot better, too.”

Calhoun’s play in the championship game gave Warrior players plenty of reasons to be happy. The contest was scoreless through its first three innings, until Emma Baalman reached base on an error, and senior catcher Madison Lehr hit a single to left field. A bad throw on a sacrifice bunt by Klocke allowed Baalman to spring home. Then, a single by freshman Sophie Lorton drove in Lehr for the second run of the inning.

Lorton proved to be a hero for Calhoun last weekend, as she also hit a game-winning triple in the State tournament semifinal on Friday.

Coach Matt Baalman acknowledged after the game that a two-run lead was a lot with a pitcher like Grace Baalman on the mound, but Calhoun gave itself an additional cushion in the fifth inning. After an Abby Baalman single, a wild pitch, and a walk of Emma Baalman, Calhoun pulled off a successful double steal. Abby Baalman scored on an ensuing bad throw and the Warriors had

a three-run lead that allowed them to ulti-mately take the game and the championship trophy.

The championship win followed an exhausting semifinal game that was score-less for its first 16 innings. Both Calhoun and Trico missed several opportunities to drive home runners.

In the top of the 17th, Grace Baalman was walked. She went 3-for-4 in the game and was walked three times by Trico. Emma Baalman laid down a sacrifice bunt. Madison Lehr was walked, and Kassidy Klocke sin-gled to load the bases. The sequence set Lorton up to be the Warriors’ heroine, as she slapped a ball to the outfield fence to drive in three runs.

“Sophie Lorton’s been doing a good job,” Calhoun coach Matt Baalman said. “She’s played a lot of ball this year, in her first full year of softball and she’s very athletic and fundamentally good. Her average may not be all that good, but her bat’s hot when she does make contact.”

He said Lorton is the type of player who will thrive more in bigger games, and that she will continue to make an impact for this team when she puts the ball on the bat.

“I have just as much confidence in her as anybody in my lineup, against a tough pitcher,” Matt Baalman said.

An additional single by Macy Magherio drove in Lorton to put the Warriors up 4-0. Magherio was praised by her coach for the way she has been swinging the bat towards the end of the season.

“Our goal is always to not let them score and to score as quickly as possible,” Matt Baalman said.

Quick victories were difficult for Calhoun to come by late in its postseason push, as Friday’s game was the third extra-innings victory in a row for the tenacious Warriors squad. A 1-0 14- inning win over Camp Point

Central clinched a sectional championship win, and Calhoun won the Super Sectional 1-0 over Westfield in the super-sectionals. Friday’s game turned out to be another mara-thon, ultimately demonstrating the patience and tenacity of Calhoun.

“If this were a 7-inning game, I knew it was going to be a 1-0 game,” Matt Baalman said. “They’re a very good team, and their pitcher is the best we’ve seen all year.”

The coach said these extra-inning games prepared Calhoun players for success.

“We’re just fortunate to come out on top,” Baalman said.

Grace Baalman gave a masterful pitching performance, walking no batters, giving up only four hits, and garnering 24 outs in a row between the fourth and 11th innings.

“Grace is Grace, you know?” Coach Baalman said about his daughter’s record-setting game. “She just does what she has to do to give her team an opportunity. She’ll give everything just to give this team an opportunity to win and she did it again.”

The coach described being at the state tournament two years in a row as “pretty unbelievable,” saying it was an experience that will take a while to soak in.

A large contingent of Calhoun fans made the trip to Peoria to witness the Warriors’ two wins at this year’s State tournament, and Calhoun’s victory touched off much celebra-tion in Hardin. Players on the team rode through the town on a firetruck upon arriv-ing back in Hardin on Saturday night, and a celebration rally was held for the team at the community’s Knights of Columbus Hall.

“I don’t think this has set in yet,” senior Emma Baalman said. “It’s such an amazing feeling to have the whole community behind you. What an amazing high school career we’ve had. Everybody works together and it’s a great feeling.” Baalman is one of four seniors who played her last game for the

Warriors on Saturday, and said on the field after Calhoun’s victory that she didn’t want to think about the end of her high school career at such a happy moment. Baalman, who will be playing volleyball at SIU Carbondale later this year, said it was an “amazing feel-ing” to have won three State championships and one State runner-up during her time at Calhoun. In addition to the consecutive soft-ball State wins, Emma Baalman also helped to lead the school’s basketball team to a State win this year and second place at the State tournament last year. Seniors Kassidy Klocke, Madison Lehr, and Sophie Klunk also closed out their high school careers with a State win.“It will be tough to replace them,” junior Grace Baalman said. “There’s no senior class like that senior class that’s leaving now. Hopefully, girls step up and we can get back.”

Lehr and Baalman were four-year starters for the Warriors, and each finish their careers with batting averages that hovered just under the .400 mark.

“Those four seniors are leaving spots that are really going to be tough to fill,” Matt Baalman said. “We’ve got a few good freshmen coming in.”When asked if he had replacements in mind for these key players, the coach said, “No, not at all. But we’ll work on it.”Losing the team’s first and third base-men this season and a catcher who proved so instrumental to Grace Baalman’s success on the mound will present Calhoun with a challenge next season. “You can win a lot of ballgames with just the corners and a good catcher with Grace pitching,” Matt Baalman said. For the players who will remain on the Warriors next year, as the softball squad will compete for its third consecutive State title, both Coach Matt Baalman and the commu-nity who is celebrating the accomplishments of their beloved Warrior squad are anxious to see what happens.
