EROSION CONTROL NOTES:
1. DITCHES AND DETENTION BASINS TO BE CONSTRUCTED PRIOR TO SITE GRADING.
2. ALL SIDE SLOPES SHALL BE 3:1 MAXIMUM. UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED.
3. ALL DITCHES SHALL BE SEEDED, STRAWED, & MATTED UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, MATTING SHALL BE TYPE
S 150 (NORTH AMERICAN GREEN) OR EQUIVALENT AND SHOULD BE INSTALLED PER MANUFACTURER'S
RECOMMENDATION.
4. CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR MEETING ALL REQUIREMENTS OF THE TDEC GENERAL NPDES
PERMIT TNR10-0000.
5. CONTRACTOR SHALL INSPECT EROSION CONTROL ON SITE AT LEAST TWICE PER CALENDAR WEEK. NO
SOONER THAN 72 HOURS APART.
6. ALL EROSION CONTROL MEASURES SHALL BE IN PLACE AND IN WORKING ORDER BEFORE CONSTRUCTION
BEGINS.
7. ALL DISTURBED AREAS SHALL BE SEEDED & STRAWED WITHIN FIFTEEN DAYS OF THE END OF FINAL GRADING.
8. ALL CONSTRUCTION ENTRANCES SHALL BE STABILIZED WITH COURSE AGGREGATE TO A DEPTH OF 6" AND
FOR A LENGTH OF 50' MINIMUM.
9. ALL FILL AND/OR TRENCH BACKFILL AREAS SHALL BE COMPACTED IN 10" LIFTS TO 98% STANDARD PROCTOR
WITHIN 2% OF OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT.
10. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE AND MAINTAIN EROSION CONTROL DURING CONSTRUCTION BY THE
PLACEMENT OF SILT FENCES AND HAY BALES WHERE NECESSARY TO PREVENT DOWNSTREAM SILTATION OF
ANY DITCHES, PIPES, DRAINAGE STRUCTURES, OR ADJACENT PROPERTIES. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL
PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL EROSION CONTROL AS NEEDED OR AS DIRECTED BY THE ENGINEER.
11. CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE ALL NECESSARY EROSION CONTROL METHODS AS PER MONTGOMERY COUNTY
AND STATE OF TENNESSEE REGULATIONS.
12. TOPSOIL PLACEMENT: IN ACCORDANCE WITH N.P.D.E.S. REQUIREMENTS ALL DISTURBED AREAS ARE TO
RECEIVE TOPSOIL REPLACEMENT TO A MINIMUM DEPTH OF 5 INCHES. THESE AREAS SHALL BE SEEDED AND
STRAWED AND SHALL RECEIVE STRAW BALE FILTERS TO ELIMINATE EROSION. THE TOPSOIL SHALL BE FREE
OF ROCKS AND LARGE CLODS. NO EROSION WILL BE ACCEPTABLE. OTHER AREAS AREA IDENTIFIED AS
WASTE AREAS TO RECEIVE ADDITIONAL TOPSOIL.
13. ADVERSE EFFECTS ON ADJOINING PROPERTIES AND ROADWAYS: DURING PERIODS OF EXTREME DRYNESS,
THE CONTRACTOR SHALL KEEP AREAS BEING GRADED DAMPENED BY WATER.
14. SLOPE DRAINS SHALL BE INSTALLED AS NECESSARY TO PREVENT SLOPE EROSION. TOTAL NUMBER OF
SLOPE DRAINS WILL BE BASED ON CONTRACTORS MEANS AND METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION. NO SLOPE

EROSION CONTROL NOTES:

12. TOPSOIL PLACEMENT: IN ACCORDANCE WITH N.P.D.E.S. REQUIREMENTS ALL DISTURBED AREAS ARE
TO RECEIVE TOPSOIL REPLACEMENT TO A MINIMUM DEPTH OF 5 INCHES. THESE AREAS SHALL BE
SEEDED AND STRAWED AND SHALL RECEIVE STRAW BALE FILTERS TO ELIMINATE EROSION. THE
TOPSOIL SHALL BE FREE OF ROCKS AND LARGE CLODS. NO EROSION WILL BE ACCEPTABLE. OTHER
AREAS AREA IDENTIFIED AS WASTE AREAS TO RECEIVE ADDITIONAL TOPSOIL.
13. ADVERSE EFFECTS ON ADJOINING PROPERTIES AND ROADWAYS: DURING PERIODS OF EXTREME

EROSION CONTROL NOTES:
E-1: CLEARING AND GRUBBING SHALL NOT BE INITIATED MORE THAN 20 CALENDAR DAYS PRIOR TO
GRADING OR EARTH MOVING ACTIVITIES UNLESS THE AREA IS TEMPORARILY SEEDED.
E-2: ALL DISTURBED AREAS SHALL BE PROPERLY STABILIZED AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE.
E-3: EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL MEASURES SHALL BE INSTALLED CONCURRENT WITH
CLEARING ACTIVITIES, AND SHALL BE FUNCTIONAL PRIOR TO ANY EARTH MOVING OPERATIONS.
E-4: CONSTRUCTION SHALL BE SEQUENCED TO MINIMIZE THE EXPOSURE TIME OF GRADED SOIL

DESIGN CAPACITY HAS BEEN REDUCED BY FIFTY PERCENT. DURING SEDIMENT REMOVAL, THE
CONTRACTOR SHALL TAKE CARE TO ENSURE THAT STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS OF EROSION
CONTROL STRUCTURES ARE NOT DAMAGED AND THUS MADE INEFFECTIVE. IF DAMAGE DOES
OCCUR, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL REPAIR THE STRUCTURES AT THE CONTRACTOR'S OWN
EXPENSE.
E-6: SEDIMENT REMOVED FROM SEDIMENT CONTROL STRUCTURES SHALL BE PLACED AND BE
TREATED IN A MANNER SO THAT THE SEDIMENT IS CONTAINED WITHIN THE PROJECT LIMITS
AND DOES NOT MIGRATE INTO WATERS OF THE STATE/ U.S.
E-7: SOIL MATERIALS MUST BE PREVENTED FROM ENTERING WATERS OF THE STATE / U.S. EROSION
AND SEDIMENTATION CONTROL MEASURES TO PROTECT WATER QUALITY MUST BE MAINTAINED
THROUGHOUT THE CONSTRUCTION PERIOD. SILT FENCE MUST BE INSTALLED ALONG THE BASE
OF ALL FILLS AND CUTS, ON THE DOWNHILL SIDE OF STOCKPILED SOIL, AND ALONG STREAM
BANKS IN CLEARED AREAS TO PREVENT SEDIMENT MIGRATION INTO STREAMS. THEY MUST BE
INSTALLED ON THE CONTOUR, ENTRENCHED AND STAKED, AND EXTEND THE WIDTH OF THE
AREA TO BE CLEARED.
E-8: SLURRY WATER PUMPED FROM WORK AREAS AND EXCAVATIONS MUST BE HELD IN SETTLING
BASINS OR TREATED BY FILTRATION PRIOR TO ITS DISCHARGE INTO SURFACE WATERS. WATER
MUST BE HELD IN SETTLING BASINS UNTIL IT IS AT LEAST AS CLEAR AS THE RECEIVING WATERS.
SETTLING BASINS SHALL BOT BE LOCATED CLOSER THAN 20 FEET FROM THE TOP BANK OF A
STREAM. SETTLING BASINS AND TRAPS SHALL BE PROPERLY DESIGNED ACCORDING TO THE
SIZE OF THE DRAINAGE AREAS OR VOLUME OF WATER TO BE TREATED. TREATED SLURRY
WATER MUST BE DISCHARGED THROUGH A PIPE OR A WELL-VEGETATED OR LINED CHANNEL SO
THAT THE DISCHARGE DOES NOT CAUSE EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION.
E-9: CHECK DAMS SHALL BE UTILIZED WHERE RUNOFF IS CONCENTRATED. RIP-RAP CHECK DAMS
SHALL BE PROPERLY CONSTRUCTED TO DETAIN RUNOFF AND TRAP SEDIMENT. CHECK DAMS

LOCATIONS WHERE VEHICLES ENTER AND EXIT THE SITE SHALL BE INSPECTED FOR EVIDENCE
OF OFF-SITE ROADWAY SEDIMENT TRACKING.
E-14: UPON CONCLUSION OF THE INSPECTIONS, EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL MEASURES
FOUND TO BE INEFFECTIVE SHALL BE REPAIRED, REPLACED, OR MODIFIED BEFORE THE NEXT
RAIN EVENT, IF POSSIBLE, BUT IN NO CASE MORE THAN SEVEN DAYS AFTER THE CONDITION IS
IDENTIFIED.
E-15: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL MAINTAIN A COPY OF THE STORM WATER POLLUTION PREVENTION
PLAN, ON-SITE (OR AT A NEARBY OFFICE).
E-16: THE OPERATION OF EQUIPMENT IN WATERS OF THE STATE / U.S., INCLUDING WETLANDS, SHALL
BE ONLY AS SHOWN ON THE PROJECT PLANS AND/OR AS SO SPECIFIED IN THE ARAP AND/OR

E-18: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN A PROACTIVE METHOD TO PREVENT

E-20: BORROW AND WASTE DISPOSAL AREAS SHALL BE LOCATED IN NON-WETLAND AREAS AND
ABOVE THE 100-YEAR, FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY FLOODPLAIN. BORROW
AND WASTE DISPOSAL AREAS SHALL NOT AFFECT ANY WATERS OF THE STATE / U.S. UNLESS

E-21: WETLAND AREAS SHALL NOT BE USED AS EQUIPMENT STORAGE, STAGING, OR
TRANSPORTATION AREAS, UNLESS PROVIDED FOR IN THE PLANS.
E-22: ANY DISAGREEMENT BETWEEN THE PROJECT PLANS, THE PROJECT AS CONSTRUCTED, AND
THE PERMIT OR PERMITS ISSUED FOR THE PROJECT SHALL BE BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF

GENERAL GRADING NOTES:
G-1: PROTECT TREES NOT MARKED FOR REMOVAL OR LOCATED OUTSIDE THE LIMITS OF
CONSTRUCTION. IF A TREE TRUNK OR BRANCH IS CUT OR SCARRED THEN THE AFFECTED AREA

G-2: THE AREA WITHIN THE LIMITS OF GRADING SHALL BE GRUBBED TO A MINIMUM DEPTH OF
TWELVE (12) INCHES BELOW EXISTING GROUND LINE ELEVATIONS TO REMOVE GRASS, ROOTS,
AND OTHER ORGANIC MATERIALS. THE TOP NINE (9) INCHES OF EXPOSED SUBGRADE, AFTER
CUTTING TO DESIRED SUBGRADE ELEVATION AND/OR BEFORE PLACEMENT OF FILL, SHOULD BE
SCARIFIED AND RECOMPACTED TO THE COMPACTION REQUIREMENTS OUTLINED IN THE
GEOTECHNICAL REPORT.
G-3: ALL DEBRIS WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE SITE BY THE CONTRACTOR. BURNING OF
COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL IS RESTRICTED AND SHALL NOT BE ALLOWED. IF PERMISSION TO BURN
IS GRANTED, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL OBTAIN ALL NECESSARY PERMITS AND PRESENT THE
PERMITS TO THE ENGINEER. NO DEBRIS SHALL BE BURIED ON SITE.
G-4: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL CONSTRUCT THE STORM WATER MANAGEMENT FACILITIES PRIOR TO
BEGINNING ANY OTHER GRADING OPERATIONS.
G-5: THE SLOPES OF ALL EXCAVATED AREAS, DITCHES, WATERWAYS, CHANNELS, BORROW PITS,
AND EMBANKMENTS SHALL BE SO TRIMMED AND SHAPED AS TO BE IN REASONABLY CLOSE
CONFORMITY WITH THE LINES AND GRADES SHOWN ON THE PLANS OR AS DIRECTED BY THE
ENGINEER.
G-6: BORROW EXCAVATION FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF EMBANKMENTS OR OTHER PORTIONS OF
WORK SHALL BE OBTAINED FROM APPROVED SOURCES. THE CONTRACTOR'S ATTENTION IS
CALLED TO SECTIONS 53-801 AND 53-809 OF THE TENNESSEE CODE, ANNOTATED, WHICH APPLY
TO BORROW PITS ONE (1) ACRE OR MORE IS SIZE THAT ARE NOT SELF DRAINING.
G-7: SOLID ROCK SHALL BE DEFINED AS (1) ROCK WHICH CANNOT BE ECONOMICALLY EXCAVATED
WITHOUT THE USE OF EXPLOSIVES OR (2) ANY ROCK, BOULDER OR FRAGMENT OF ROCK OR
CONCRETE EXCAVATED FROM A FORMATION HAVING A VOLUME GREATER THAN ONE HALF (1/2)
CUBIC YARD.
SHOULD SOLID ROCK BE ENCOUNTERED AND EXCAVATION OF SOLID ROCK IS COVERED WITHIN
THE CONTRACT BETWEEN THE OWNER AND THE CONTRACTOR, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL
NOTIFY THE ENGINEER IMMEDIATELY. REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ENGINEER SHALL MEASURE
THE SOLID ROCK EXCAVATION TO DETERMINE THE QUANTITY OF SOLID ROCK EXCAVATION
SHALL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ENGINEER.
G-8: IF CONTROLLED BLASTING IS USED AS AN ALTERNATE TO NON-EXPLOSIVE METHODS OF
EXCAVATION, IT SHALL BE PERFORMED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TENNESSEE BLASTING
STANDARDS ACT OF 1975. THE CONTRACTOR ASSUMES ALL LIABILITY FOR ALL PERSONAL
INJURY. ANY DAMAGE TO REAL OR PERSONAL PROPERTY, OR INTERFERENCE WITH THE USE
OF ENJOYMENT OF ANY PROPERTY BY REASON OF BLASTING OR THE RESULTING VIBRATION OR
CONCUSSION.
G-9: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE REQUIRED TO EMPLOY A GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER LICENSED IN
THE STATE OF TENNESSEE TO ENSURE THAT EMBANKMENTS ARE BEING CONSTRUCTED IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE PLANS.
G-10: EMBANKMENTS SHALL BE PLACED IN HORIZONTAL LAYERS NOT TO EXCEED TEN (10) INCHES IN
DEPTH BEFORE COMPACTION, AND EACH LAYER SHALL BE COMPACTED TO A DENSITY NOT
LESS THAN 98% OF MAXIMUM DENSITY AS DETERMINED BY ASTM D698.
G-11: WHEN EMBANKMENT IS TO BE PLACED AND COMPACTED ON HILLSIDES, OR WHEN NEW
EMBANKMENT IS TO BE COMPACTED AGAINST EXISTING EMBANKMENTS, OR WHEN THE
EMBANKMENT IS TO BE BUILT IN PHASES, THE SLOPES THAT ARE STEEPER THAN 4:1 SHALL BE
CONTINUOUSLY BENCHED OVER THOSE AREAS AS THE EMBANKMENT IS BROUGHT UP IN
LAYERS.
G-12: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE STABILITY OF ALL EMBANKMENTS AND CUT
SLOPES AND SHALL REPLACE AT HIS OWN EXPENSE ANY PORTIONS WHICH, IN THE OPINION OF
THE ENGINEER, HAVE BECOME DISPLACED OR DAMAGED DUE TO HIS CARELESSNESS OR
NEGLIGENCE.
G-13: ALL SLOPES SHALL BE 3 (H): 1 (V) MAXIMUM UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED.
G-14: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE REQUIRED TO PLACE TOPSOIL TO A DEPTH OF FIVE (5) INCHES ON
ALL DISTURBED AREAS. TOPSOIL SHALL BE PLACED BEFORE SEEDING IN ACCORDANCE WITH
THE TN EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL HANDBOOK. PERMANENT EROSION CONTROL
MEASURES (SEEDED AND MULCHED) SHALL BE INITIATED WITHIN 15 CALENDAR DAYS AFTER
FINAL GRADING.
G-15: UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED ON THE PLANS, ALL DISTURBED AREAS SHALL BE
PERMANENTLY STABILIZED WITH SEEDING AND MULCH. MULCH MATERIALS CAN CONSIST OF
HAY OR STRAW AT THE APPROXIMATE RATE OF 75 POUNDS PER 1000 SQUARE FEET AND HELD
IN PLACE BY THE USE OF A MULCH BINDER.
G-16: DURING PERIODS OF EXTREME DRYNESS, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL KEEP AREAS BEING
GRADED DAMPENED BY WATERING TO MINIMIZE THE EFFECTS OF DUST ON ADJOINING
PROPERTIES.
G-17: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE REQUIRED TO FURNISH DETAILED TOPOGRAPHIC DRAWINGS AND
VOLUME CALCULATIONS FOR EACH STORM WATER DETENTION BASIN ON SITE. THESE
CALCULATIONS MUST BE PERFORMED BY A LICENSED SURVEYOR OR ENGINEER IN THE STATE
OF TENNESSEE.
G-18: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN THE STORM WATER POLLUTION PREVENTION
PLAN (SWPPP) AS WELL AS THE NOTICE OF INTENT (NOI). THE CONTRACTOR UNDERSTANDS
THAT HE MUST ABIDE BY THE REGULATIONS CONTAINED IN NPDES PERMIT NUMBER TNR100000,
AND THAT HIS ON-SITE ACTIVITIES ARE THEREBY REGULATED. THE CONTRACTOR IS
RESPONSIBLE FOR SATISFYING ALL REQUIREMENTS AS OUTLINED IN THE APPROVED SWPPP.
G-19: THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FILING A NOTICE OF TERMINATION WITH THE
TENNESSEE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND CONSERVATION WHEN ALL CONSTRUCTION
AND STABILIZATION ACTIVITIES HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.
STORM DRAINAGE & DITCH NOTES:
SD-1: IT SHALL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR TO VERIFY PIPE SIZES, ANGLES,
MATERIAL, ETC. PRIOR TO ORDERING STRUCTURES AND ENSURE THAT THE PROPOSED
STRUCTURE WILL ACCEPT ALL PIPES, GRATES, AND CASTINGS. ADJUSTMENTS TO THE
DIMENSIONS SHOWN MAY BE NECESSARY BASED ON CONSTRAINTS LISTED ABOVE. SHOP
DRAWINGS SHALL BE SUBMITTED TO THE ENGINEER FOR REVIEW PRIOR TO THE

SD-3: STORM SEWER PIPE SHALL BE CONSTRUCTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE DETAILS SHOWN ON
THE PLANS. BEDDING MATERIAL FOR STORM SEWER PIPE SHALL BE HARD DURABLE PARTICLES
OR FRAGMENTS OF STONE, SLAG, GRAVEL OR CHERT, TOGETHER WITH SUCH MATERIAL AS
MANUFACTURED SAND OR OTHER FINE MATERIAL NATURALLY CONTAINED AND IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE GRADATION SPECIFIED AS NO 57 OR NO 67 IN AASHTO M43.
SD-4: HEADWALLS: ALL HEADWALLS SHOWN SHALL BE PRECAST CONCRETE IN ACCORDANCE WITH

CONTROL MATTING (NORTH AMERICAN GREEN TYPE S-150 OR EQUIVALENT) PLACED ALONG THE
CROSS SECTION. RIP RAP DITCHES SHALL HAVE RIP RAP (D50 = 12 INCHES), A DEPTH OF 18

SD-7: EXISTING SINKHOLES: IN AREAS OF EXISTING SINKHOLES THE CONTRACTOR IS TO EXERCISE
EXTREME CAUTION DURING ALL PHASES OF CONSTRUCTION TO MAINTAIN THE INTEGRITY OF
