PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As I sat down to write the President’s message, I decided to look at

all that we are able to do versus what we are unable to do, what we

have versus what we don’t have, and where we are going versus

where we are not going. There are always bright spots in any

situation, we just have to look for them and realize what really makes

us happy.

Our Club provides an abundance of social interaction among our

members, Dennis Krajewski helped us realize that we can still have

this. Fourteen corvettes, all piloted by masked people were able to enjoy a beautiful

sunny afternoon cruising the back roads of Connecticut. No, we didn’t shake hands,

hug, kiss, or enjoy a meal together, but instead we received our cruise directions while

remaining in our favorite cars. Dennis used his daughter’s high school cheerleading

megaphone so we all could hear, and yes it did closely resemble a highway traffic cone,

and most fortunately Dennis did not wear a little tutu like the cheerleaders do. Can you

imagine Dennis in a tutu? No, I can’t either, it hurts my eyes just thinking about it!

Everyone kept their distance, wore masks, and most certainly had an enjoyable

afternoon. We can continue to do these things; we just have to be a bit creative and

follow all the recommendations to keep us all safe and healthy. Thank you, Dennis, for

thinking outside the box.

The Connecticut restriction on meetings in excess of 5 people has not allowed your Club

officers to meet in person. Mike Dansereau tested several options and we held our first

‘virtual’ board meeting via Webex last week. We were able to talk among ourselves as if

we were sitting in the same room and can see each other, provided your computer has a

camera. Mike is working on the possibility of having a membership meeting via Webex.

It won’t be quite as social as meeting at Donovan’s Reef, but you will stay informed on

all that we are doing and what to expect in the future from our Club.

We have had to make a lot of difficult decisions recently, but the wisest one was our

unanimous agreement that our sponsors, those who we rely on year after year for

financial assistance, use of their facilities, pizzas, coffee and donuts, donated golf carts

to mention only a few, now needed us. We are requesting that none of our sponsors

consider a monetary sponsorship donation to Club Corvette in 2020. We know they are

all being adversely affected by the pandemic, we know they have employees that rely on

them for their livelihood, and we also know that our Club has made some prudent

financial decisions over the years to protect ourselves and provide a safety net in the

event of unforeseen events – just like this. They have always been there for us and I

am confident they will be there for us in the future, now it is our turn to be there for

them, and we are.

Page 4: CLUB CORVETTE OF CONNECTICUT, INC · Our Club provides an abundance of social interaction among our members, ... my wife of almost 50 years, 2 incredible children, 4 absolutely

By my nature I am a happy person. I would much rather smile than frown, I would much

rather be with people than alone, I much prefer to talk than be silent even though my

wife says I talk way too much and she is probably right, as usual. Most importantly I try

to see something positive while being surrounded by negative events. Today, I look at

my family, my wife of almost 50 years, 2 incredible children, 4 absolutely adorable

grandkids, incredibly friendships we have made over the years, we are all healthy and

doing all we can to stay that way, and all of our basic needs are fulfilled day after day.

How can I ask for more than that? I find inspirational quotes from others much smarter

than me very beneficial and Helen Keller offers some very wise words “I cried because

I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet.”

Be well, stay safe and be happy!

Rick

Dennis’ Don’t Touch Me Cruise

During this time of staying in and keeping your distance from people, Ann and myself

have been using our favorite thing in the world, our Corvette, to get out for even a small amount of time, just to clear our heads and relieve the stress that I am sure has

built up in most of us. We would end up at the Fish Tail in Madison where we ordered meals from the phone and they were brought out and placed by our car door for us to

take. Last week I invited everyone from the Club to come with us on one of our cruises

to nowhere. Nothing spectacular, just a drive in the country looking at houses, barns, ponds, lakes, woods etc. I told everyone that if they wanted to come we would meet in

the rear of the north bound I-95 McDonald's in Madison at 03:00.

To my surprise and joy over a

dozen cars showed up. Sorry I cannot tell you who was there

because everyone was wearing protective masks. I felt like

Butch Cassidy leading the Hole in The Wall Gang. It was great

seeing members and talking to them at a safe distance in the

parking lot. The cruise lasted

about an hour. We did end up driving by the Fish Tail, but unfortunately it was jammed because it was Sunday. Most of

us drove by and just headed home. It was good getting out for that little bit of time and being with friends. Even though we were apart, we were together. We also got a lot of

waves and thumbs up from people passing our little convoy. I am hoping like I am sure all of us are that this will be coming to an end soon.

The Pit Stop

The History of Corvette Racing Part 1 1953 - 1955

Sometime in 2002, former Club Corvette of Connecticut (CCC) member Bill Breski, Dennis Krajewski and myself took a ride to the Northeast corner of Connecticut, to visit

the ‘Road Racing Center of the East’, Lime Rock Park (LRP). I first visited LRP in 1967 to watch a Trans-Am event. The Trans-Am series had some of the greatest drivers of all

time, Mark Donohue, Sam Posey, Parnelli Jones and my favorite Sam Posey just to name a few. I’ve attended races at LRP ever since. On this occasion we were not there to

attend a race, it wasn’t racing season and in fact snow covered the track. Our attended purpose was to try and influence those in charge to name the Corvette the ‘Official

Marque of 2003’. Corvette would be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2003 and we as representatives of CCC were convinced that this was an honor truly deserved by

America’s only true sports car. After we made our case the gentleman representing LRP

looked at the three of us and said ‘Oh Corvette has a racing heritage’. We were all numbed by this and left shaking our heads. Needless to say Corvette was not the

honored marque in 2003. I believe the honor went to Austin Healey.

The series of articles I intend to write for the Vette Gazette over the next several months will answer the question, ‘Does Corvette have a racing heritage?’. All that read

these articles, upon their completion will have an answer, especially for those F & P owners, you know those Ferrari and Porsche people.

This first article will be about the very earliest attempts, 1953–1955. It won’t be very long because in those first years there’s little to report. I find it very interesting that

within the Corvette world there has been a number of enthusiasts lately that believe the 1953-1955 should be labeled the C-1 and that the redesigned 1956-1962 should be the

C-2’s and so forth making this year’s, 2020, Corvette the C-9. What are your thoughts?

Back to 1953 and the birth of the Corvette. The two men most responsible for the inception are Harley Earl, Head of Design, and Bill Mitchell, Chief Engineer. GM and its

Chevrolet division were interested in building a two-seater sports car. At the conclusion

of WW II some returning GI’s brought with them some nimble, inexpensive sport cars. There were primarily English MG’s and Jaguars. They would be followed by Porsches

and Mercedes from Germany and Ferrari’s from Italy.

Earl and Mitchell were also interested in developing a car with a new light weight material. We all know the material; a composite would become known as Fiberglass.

Did you know that the first company GM called on to produce this new material was U.S. Rubber in Naugatuck, Ct?

This new car would use only existing Chevrolet components, have a wheelbase of 102 inches same as the Jaguar XK120. It would be fitted with an automatic transmission;

the engineers didn’t think there was time to develop a manual gearbox. The engine would be the ‘Blue Flame’ six cylinder.

Page 12: CLUB CORVETTE OF CONNECTICUT, INC · Our Club provides an abundance of social interaction among our members, ... my wife of almost 50 years, 2 incredible children, 4 absolutely

The name Corvette came from a nimble, sleek, fast naval vessel and it made it’s debuted at the Waldorf Astoria in New York in January 1953 at that year’s Motorama.

The Corvette was an immediate success and GM made a commitment to get the car into production as quickly as possible. In 1953 Chevrolet produced 300 Corvettes, all white

with red interiors. An unsubstantiated story that I’ve heard was that dealers were to attempt to sell those first year Corvettes to VIP’s on their community. That’s how John

Wayne became an owner. For the record he didn’t keep it long, he didn’t fit very well in the car.

One man who saw the car at the Motorama and liked the design and more importantly

saw the potential was a Belgium born, German educated, Russian engineer by the name of Zora Arkus-Duntov. He would soon be hired by GM and turn his attention to bring that

potential to the Corvette. Duntov had been a racer with some success. He would win

his class at Le Mans while an employee of Chevrolet in both 1954 & 1955 driving a Porsche Spyder.

The Corvette in its present form would race in class ‘C’, the same class as the Mercedes

300 SL Gullwing and the fore mentioned Jaguar XK120. Dr. Dick Thompson, a dentist, was driving for Jaguar, tested an early Corvette and turned times comparable to the Jag

until the brakes went away. (There will be much more on the ‘Flying Dentist’ in future articles).

In 1954 a Corvette was entered in the Carrera Pan America race. The race started in Southern Mexico and finished at the US border with Mexico. The car was driven by Bill

Von Esser and co-driven by Earnest Pulz. In its first attempt in international competition the Corvette didn’t last the first leg of the event being derailed by a blown engine.

For 1955 Zora saw to it that the Corvette would begin to live up to its potential. One

catalyst was Ford’s introduction of their new V-8 powered two-seater, the Thunderbird. The ’55 Corvette would be fitted with a 265 cubic inch V-8, that was some 30 lbs. lighter

than the Blue Flame six. Duntov developed a high lift cam for the V-8 which was fitted

with 2 four barrel Carter Carbs. The engine produced 225 horsepower. A three speed manual transmission was now standard equipment. This combination produced a 0 to

60 time of 7.5 seconds and a standing ¼ mile time of 16 seconds at a speed in excess of 90 mph.

Now that Duntov and Corvette had the speed to compete it was time to go after the

handling.

The year 1956 would be monumental for Corvette.

Callaway Competition Ready for

ADAC GT Masters in 2020

The Callaway Competition team is ready for the 2020 ADAC GT Masters season with a new Corvette C7 GT3-R. For the 14th consecutive season in

the GT3 championship, the team from Leingarten was able to retain a new driver, the Swiss racer Jeffrey Schmidt (CH). He will replace Marvin

Kirchhöfer, who won’t be available for Callaway during the 2020 season. Jeffrey will form a new driver duo with Markus Pommer (DE).

It’s not an ADAC GT Masters season without Callaway Competition: In 2020, the longest-serving team in the “Super Sports Car League” will compete in the ADAC

GT Masters once again. The Corvette team has been an integral part of the starting field since the ADAC GT Masters’ 2007 season. With 33 victories and two titles in

the driver and team rankings, team manager Mike Gramke’s Leingarten, Germany, team is not only one of the most experienced, but also one of the most successful

teams in this racing series.

Page 14: CLUB CORVETTE OF CONNECTICUT, INC · Our Club provides an abundance of social interaction among our members, ... my wife of almost 50 years, 2 incredible children, 4 absolutely

Despite a successful start to last year’s season with three victories, the season and the team’s championship ambitions had to be laid to rest after the penultimate race

in Hockenheim. Two violent crashes damaged the Corvette driven by Markus

Pommer (29 / Heilbronn) and Marvin Kirchhöfer (26 / Lucerne) so badly that the Callaway team was unable to continue racing for the first time in its ADAC GT

Masters history.

After the season, however, it quickly became clear that Callaway would build a new race car during the winter break and return to competition in 2020.

At the beginning of the new year, however, numerous conflicts with other racing

series and, more recently, the Coronavirus (COVID-19), which is currently causing uncertainty worldwide, made it difficult for the team to plan. Ultimately, driver

Marvin Kirchhöfer, who is contractually bound by R-Motorsport, did not get approval

and Callaway had to find a replacement to team with Markus Pommer.

For the 14th season in a row, Callaway Competition was able to acquire another fast driver to join the team. The new driver, Jeffrey Schmidt (26 / Liestal), had

previously piloted an Audi R8 LMS in the ADAC GT Masters for three seasons and was able to record one win, one pole position and a total of 7 podium finishes.in his

42 races.

Markus Pommer and Jeffrey Schmidt will share driving duties in the Corvette C7 GT3-R, developed and rebuilt by Callaway Competition. The car will be designated

with the traditional number #77 and the team has set the goal in 2020 of being at the front again.

When, where and how the ADAC GT Masters 2020 season will start is still uncertain

due to the current, precarious situation caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

WELCOME AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY

The entire team warmly welcomes its new addition, Jeffrey Schmidt, and wishes him a happy 26th birthday and good luck for the coming season.

“I thank Ernst Wöhr, Giovanni Ciccone and

the Callaway Competition Team for the

trust they’ve placed in me. After a

disappointing 2019 season, I’m looking

forward to the new challenge and the

promising collaboration with this

experienced team and my new teammate

Markus Pommer. We’re well positioned for

2020 and we’ve set some ambitious goals

for ourselves.”

Jeffrey Schmidt (26/Liestal)

“I’m very pleased that I’m back with

Callaway Competition this year. Last year,

we celebrated great success together and,

unfortunately, we suffered some setbacks.

After the two accidents at Hockenheim last

year, I’m happy that the car is in top

condition again and that we can attack the

Series again. I would like to thank the

entire team for this as they worked very

hard during the winter to put together a

good package. With Jeffrey, I have a very

quick teammate who also has a lot of

experience in the ADAC GT Masters. We’re

all motivated and we want to be at the

front again.”

Markus Pommer (28/Heilbronn)

Page 16: CLUB CORVETTE OF CONNECTICUT, INC · Our Club provides an abundance of social interaction among our members, ... my wife of almost 50 years, 2 incredible children, 4 absolutely

“The team accomplished a lot over the

winter months. We mastered the hurdles

well and we’re happy that we were able to

get a new fast driver with Jeffrey Schmidt.

With Markus Pommer and Jeffrey Schmidt,

we’re very well positioned for the coming

season and I think we can make a charge

to the front again. However, it’s uncertain

exactly when this season will start.

Naturally, we hope that we’ll have an

exciting championship again this year.

However, the top priority is the health of

every single team member, all of our

drivers and our fans. So now we have no

choice but to wait.”

Mike Gramke (Team Manager)

In an effort to keep Corvette enthusiasts engaged in the wake of many spring and

summer automotive events being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the

National Corvette Museum launched a new online endeavor – a celebrity choice car

show. For just $10 per entry, Corvette owners could upload and submit their cars

in a number of categories in hopes of being selected and recognized by one of the

VIP judges.

Participation in the show exceeded the expectations of the Museum, with over

responded, what else are we going to do, go to a car show, even if its online.”

Retired Corvette Chief Engineer David Hill echoed Mike’s sentiment.

President / CEO’s Choice presented by Custom LED selected by Dr. Sean Preston

goes to Fred Kokaska with a 1961.

People’s Choice presented by Zip Corvette goes to Peter Asacker with a 1967

Corvette.

The Club participation award was determined by calculating percentage of a club

that registered for the car show. More than 235 Corvette Clubs were represented in

the show and with 25% club participation, the award goes to Sunset Vettes of

Northwest Florida.

Mobil 1 also provided some awards and have selected Carlos Rodriguez as the

winner of the Best Street Corvette with Keith Cross and Darryl Loafman taking

runners up spots, and Paul Herzing taking a comic relief award. Bruce Jarrett

received the nod for Best Track Corvette.

“We have been thrilled with the level of participation and engagement this new

endeavor has achieved,” shared Dr. Sean Preston. “Many of the participants

indicated that they have never visited the Museum, so this was a great way to

engage them. Even some of our members who are not able to visit often said the

show allowed them to participate in a Museum event from home and helped them

feel connected to us. We plan to do this again in the future! Thank you again to our

sponsors and judges for their participation.”

“A special recognition to all the beautifully maintained and driven Corvettes in this

judging,” added Dave McLellan.
