Godzilla the iguana is one of the critters who lives at Cinemazoo/Urban Safari Rescue Society in South Surrey.
By Jennifer LangIt’s a quiet summer aft ernoon at South Surrey’s
Cinemazoo and Urban Safari Rescue Society, where administrator Sharon Doucette sits quietly at her desk near the front door.
Th ere’s a sudden crash as her waste paper basket topples over. Something is on the move.
“Th at’s Godzilla,” she smiles, referring to the 16-year-old mature iguana who’s heading for the front door.
Th e scale-covered iguana is one the dozens of non-human denizens of Cinemazoo and Urban Safari Rescue Society that children attending day camps are meeting and learning about this summer – as will members of the public Sunday, Aug. 12 when the so-ciety hosts a 25th anniversary celebration and open house.
Th e society rescues and rehabilitates wild and exotic animals. Most are donations or rescues. Where pos-sible, new homes are found, or they’re returned to the wild.
Godzilla is a relatively new arrival. He was res-cued about two months ago. He was suff ering from an abscess on his leg the size of a baseball. It’s almost healed.
Stepping inside, the fi rst thing you notice is the heat – it’s kept at about 78 to 80 degrees inside the refuge – and the humidity. You can also hear crickets and birds chirping, along with the fl utter of wings and burble of aquarium tanks.
About 50 to 60 diff erent species make their home here, including scorpions, snakes, cockroaches, spi-ders, birds, fi sh and turtles, lots of turtles.
“We are at capacity for turtles,” says owner and op-erator Gary Oliver. “We won’t take any more.”
No kidding – there are turtles everywhere, in tanks and enclosures. Dozens of large turtles lounge in a large indoor pond that’s fi lled with more goldfi sh.
A collection of bunny hutches housing rescued rab-bits and guinea pigs is nearby.
“Dozer”, a 27-year-old tortoise, is the society’s un-disputed mascot. Left to his own devices, he makes quick progress, steadily.
“He just loves people.”Volunteers lather his shell with moisturizer each
week to keep it supple.
Most of the inhabitants are rescues and donations from owners who can no longer keep their exotic pets.
“Just yesterday, a lady brought in fi ve goldfi sh and a turtle,” Oliver says. Th e goldfi sh are huge.
It’s the sort of place where the human denizens eat their lunch just inches from a tank fi lled with a school of piranhas, the carnivorous, sharp-toothed fi sh known for feeding frenzies.
It’s also home to dozens of spiders, local and exot-ic. Th e Indian ornament tarantula is fed baby mice. Th e salmon bellied tarantula eats birds. Oliver asks if I want to take him out of the tank.
“He won’t jump,” he assures me.Th en there’s “Fluff y”, a 24-year-old Mexican Red
Knee Tarantula.Oliver, a fedora-clad man with a neatly-trimmed
white beard and round eyeglasses, got his start in 1988, working at an animal agency, rescuing ani-mals in distress.
Since then, it’s been his mission to educate people about exotic animals – he urges people not to keep them as pets – as well as work for conservation of species and natural habitat.
“It’s a really driving force,” he says, explaining he believes the world has reached a critical stage in terms of conservation and environmental issues.
“We’re on a downward trend,” he says. “We’re los-ing all the animals’ habitat.”
Oliver wants to educate people, and make them aware of what’s happening – and who’s actually do-ing something positive about it.
He doesn’t want children, especially, to feel help-less. Rather, he’d like to provide options for them to channel their eff orts into creating positive change.
He believes giving the public the opportunity to view endangered and exotic creatures in person is critical in order to build support for conservation eff orts.
“You can show people videos and photographs till you’re blue in the face, but there’s no real respect or appreciation until you see for yourself.”
He likens it to seeing the Rocky mountains for the fi rst time. Photographs just don’t quite do them justice.
He says his goal is to open a state-of-the-art ed-ucation centre for the Fraser Valley. He envisions high tech interactive displays that will appeal to kids and adults.
Where the wild things are
Meanwhile, there are wonders in miniature to admire, such as the Span-ish Ribbed Newt. When attacked, it pushes out its ribs until they pierce its body, exposing a row of bones that acts like rows of poisonous barbs.
Th e public is welcome to browse the zoo’s library, where there are 3,000 reference books, some of them very rare.
Th ere are daily trips to schools and it hosts four to eight birthdays each weekend. “It’s the only way we can af-ford to feed these animals.”
Th e centre off ers programs for children and young adults, such as the Nature Club and the Junior Zoo Keeper course for kids aged 13 to 17.
It’s the fi rst year the society has of-fered summer day camps for kids out of its facility at 1395 176 Street.
“Animals have given me so many stories and adventures,” he says, look-ing around proudly.
Th e centre is located at 1395 176 Street. It’s open for tours Monday to Friday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Satur-days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mario, Rossi, and the road more travelled
By Richard Dal MonteI blame Mario. It is his fault, the alarm that wakes me much too
early on Saturday mornings. His fault, the (ahem) snug Lycra shorts I wear, the
colourful jerseys I pull over my head. His fault, the countless hours and kilometres I spend
on two skinny wheels.I also blame Rossi.Let me explain: Preparing to move a few years ago,
my friend Mario Bartel, a photographer and reporter at the NewsLeader papers in Burnaby and New West-minster — and a hardcore cyclist — needed to get rid of some of his stuff . So he did what anyone would (not) do: He created a website and emailed the link to friends and acquaintances, who could then shop online for used Ikea furniture and other household items.
Or, in my case, a blue, steel-framed Kona mountain bike that had carried its owner up and down trails for years but had been replaced with a newer model. With an eye to upgrading from a bike I had bought in the 1980s, I pointed and clicked to reserve that beast, an investment of a couple of hundred bucks in future fun and fi tness.
When I visited Mario to pick up my purchase, he mentioned he was also selling his old road bike, which he’d been using on his training machine and which he would throw in for an extra $50.
Th at’s Rossi. Sleek, elegant tubular steel. Gleaming chrome forks. A hard, old leather seat. Italian.
Mario had bought it more than 20 years earlier, when he was a uni-versity student, and just as it had grabbed him from the fi rst ride, it spoke to me now.
It spoke of packs of riders on mountain roads and city streets in my family’s native northern Italy.
It spoke of childhood freedom in East Van on my purple bike with the banana seat and sissy bar, and, later, my brother’s hand-me-down, Woodwards-bought 10-speed.
It reminded me of the time, more than two decades earlier, when I heard someone talk about riding to Whistler and I had thought, “Wouldn’t that be cool?,” never thinking I would do it (I’ve done it).
And, it said one thing I immediately knew to be true: Th is is going to become an expensive habit.
Still, cheapskate though I am, I was sold. And, thus began the education of a roadie, another MAMIL (mid-
dle-aged man in Lycra) among the hundreds you see on local roads any given weekend.
Not that I was a two-wheeled newbie. I remember the precise mo-ment, as a child, that I learned to ride without training wheels, push-ing off my neighbour David Andrews’ front steps and cruising down the sidewalk, the secret of balance suddenly revealed, a discovery that would yield hundreds of hours of fun with friends — Albert, Dave, Gary, Gary, Robbie, Mark, Bill — on the streets of our neighbour-hood.
Now, the carbon-fi bre Cannondale that the Rossi begat is also the source of much recreation with riding buddies.
First, there was Max, a friend and neighbour who let me slow him down on trail rides and road outings until I was usually able to keep up. Th en came Hush, Ziv, Sumo, Detonator and Andrew. Mario, too.
Each is better, stronger, faster than I. But when I struggle up a hill, which I usually do, I sometimes think of a story about my father that I learned only aft er Rossi entered my life, and only aft er my dad died: He was about 25 when he was preparing to emigrate from Italy and was working clearing brush in a town called Castello Tesino in the
Dolomite Mountains. Word came to his family’s home that he was to attend a meeting about his emigration. His brother Silvano got on a bike and rode 50 km or so to alert him and to take over my dad’s job so he could take the bicicletta and ride back to attend the meeting that would propel him to Canada.
I think of this story and I imagine him pedalling a heavy, old bike. I imagine the hairy switchbacks of the Dolomiti. I imagine a deter-mined young man in dirty work clothes and worn boots pushing to his future. I imagine this ride as but one of many challenges before him.
And, I keep pedalling. For that, I blame Mario.

Just a love for lacrosse. Th at’s how MacKenzie Rolland does it.
Rolland and her squad – which she cobbled together with her longtime friends and teammates – won the Cascade Cup in Snohomish, Wash. on July 29. Th ey pulled their team together just fi ve days before the tournament, and were off to the States to compete against other high school girls.
Th ey didn’t have a coach, and they would be playing some of the best teams in the United States. Th ey just want-
ed to have fun, and they ended up with a trophy.
“Everyone got equal play-ing time, and if we needed to work on something, we would talk about it as a team,” Rolland said.
Rolland is a Sur-rey girl, born-and-raised in Fleetwood and Cloverdale, and has moved around within the area. She is entering her Grade 12 year at North Surrey Sec-ondary, but says her youth was spent at Cloverdale Rec Centre.
Rolland and her Cascade Cup team have known each other and played together for a long time. She said it was re-
freshing to play in a tour-nament where they could be themselves and bond, admitting that it’s not always like that if you’re trying too hard to be competitive.
“It wasn’t like we were strict, or go for
gold,” she said. “Th e chemis-try between the team just grew, and that really refl ected well in our game.”
Th e team spent its off -time at dinner and the hotel swim-ming pool.
“We didn’t really expect any-thing going into the tourna-ment, so coming out of it with a trophy was amazing.”
In six games, Rolland scored 10 goals and added 14 assists. Her team won three straight playoff games to win the Cup.
“It was really nice to hold up the cup, kind of felt like we won the Stanley Cup or some-thing,” she said of the celebra-tion. “Th at was defi nitely really fun, when we were all running in and jumping on our goalie.”

NCAA will vote on SFU inclusion today
Surrey and Burnaby are one step closer to jump-ing ship for showtime.
Today, the NCAA’s Division II President’s Coun-cil will vote on whether or not to include Simon Fraser University as a full-time member.
Th e NCAA modifi ed their acceptance policies last week, eff ectively allowing SFU to become a full-time member in its athletic competitions and divisions.
Th e school and its teams – the Clan – joined the NCAA as its fi rst non-U.S. member in 2009, and was then introduced as a Provisional Division II Institution in September, 2011, aft er it completed a two-year membership candidacy.
If SFU passes today’s vote, the school will be eli-gible to play in NCAA championships.

URSULA MAXWELL-LEWIS PHOTOS
Clockwise: Pioneer women are showcased in a rich and colourful interpretive display in the heart of historic Nevada; a sign lets you know you’re on the Pony Express; Alice makes Austin’s treasures into her own little wonderland.
All aboard the Pony EXPRESSBy Ursula Maxwell-LewisNevada: I’m on the road again – this time discover-
ing that this state is not all about casinos and mining. Th ink Top Gun, Pony Express, petroglyphs, hiking, biking... and Alice (“in Wonderland”) at the end of Th e Loneliest Road in America (US Highway 50).
Th ank goodness for the rumble strips keeping driv-ers alert on US 50. Th is hot-enough-to-fry-an-egg-on-the-road desert highway slicing through the heart of Nevada actually crosses the country from Sacra-mento, California to Ocean City, Maryland. Like the Pony Express riders, I’m riding it (true confession: not on horseback) out of Carson City.
With the occasional stop throughout the morning, I’m reminded that mountains (such as the Sierra Ne-vada) plus prairie, pastoral land, and desert, decorate this feisty frontier state.
A lone launderette on a hillside outside Austin marks where we leave “Lonely.” Why the launder-ette? Perhaps for truckers who make the highway less lonely.
Ducking out of the blazing sun into a cool gloomy tavern which is clearly a local hangout, I discovered three coff ee-drinking gals shooting the breeze and clearly not open for business. Th ey tell me the own-er is off in Reno, they’re keeping the doors open and all were born in Austin.
“I left , went to Vegas, didn’t like it and came home,” one tells me. Th e other two have never left .
“Everyone knows each other here,” they explain. “It feels like you’re in your own little world.”
I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Over in the Turquoise and Silver Shop are plenty of good deals, local jewelry worth the drive... and Alice (in Wonderland, she says). Alice is worth the drive, too. She has nothing but time, so if you’re in a rush, keep on truckin’.
“I have lots in my head,” she informs me matter-of-factly. “I need to get it out.”
Aft er a quick look at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church (currently being restored as a cultural cen-ter for Central Nevada), and the International Ho-tel (reputed to be Nevada’s oldest), I head for nearby Grimes Point.
Over 8,000 years ago, Native Americans left their marks at Grimes Point in the form of petroglyphs, or rock art. Th e self-guided interpretive trail here makes its own rather haunting impact. Call it imag-ination, Karma, or soul medicine, but I left with a hint of having connected with the spirits.
I returned to the Pony Express route, which made an indelible mark in history during only 18 months. Beginning on April 3, 1860 and ending in October 1861, riders raced in stages over mountains, deserts and plains crossing over 1,800 miles of wilderness from Sacramento, California to St. Joseph, Mis-souri. Th ey covered the territory in 10 days – half the time of the stagecoach.
Th roughout North American history, I am always conscious of courage, but particularly of pioneering women. I recommend visiting the California Trail Centre while in the area. It’s new, it’s free, and it’s worth the time, if history intrigues you.

There are many joys of adopting an adult cat
“I want a kitten, not a cat.”Every day, BC SPCA branch man-
agers are faced with countless num-bers of people looking for kittens; at the same time, branches across the province are overwhelmed with nearly one thousand adult cats awaiting homes. That’s why the BC
SPCA is highlighting the many benefi ts of adopting adult cats, especially during their annual summer infl ux of highly desired kittens.
We have so many wonderful cats who would make amaz-ing companions in any loving home, however, the sad real-ity is that cats are often over-looked in favor of kittens, and this is especially true during kit-ten season.
In animal welfare organizations, “kitten season” com-monly refers to the huge increase of surrendered and aban-doned kittens that begins in May and continues throughout the fall.
While many kittens are quickly scooped up by adopters, adult cats experience a longer stay at shelters. In fact, BC SPCA statistics indicate the average kitten has spent 31 days
in care; the average adult cat, however, has remained 77 per cent longer. Of all felines available for adoption, the ratio of cats to kittens is 2:1.
There are many joys of adopting an adult cat. “There are so many advantages to choosing a full-grown cat. They’re more settled, they’re housetrained and their personalities are fully developed so you know exactly what you’re getting.”
Adult cats enjoy your companionship and aff ection, but don’t demand the level of supervision of their younger counterparts. To view cats and all other animals available for adoption, visit spca.bc.ca/adopt.
The BC SPCA is a non-profi t organiza-tion funded primarily by public donations. Our mission is to pre-vent cruelty and to promote the welfare of
animals through a wide range of services, including cruelty investigations, emergency rescue and treatment, sheltering and adoption of homeless and abused animals, humane education, advocacy, farm animal welfare, spay/neuter pro-grams, and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation
