Water use restrictionson the ColdwaterBecause of the Drought Level 4
The ministry of Forests, Lands andNatural resource operations has re-stricted water use on farms in the Cold-water river valley in a bid to help salmonthat are expected to begin spawning soon.
Farms & ranches drawing water fromthe Coldwater and its tributaries havebeen told they must restrict their wateruse between 6pm and 6am until Aug. 11,after which they will be prohibited fromdrawing any water until Sept. 30.
The ministry says the order covers theholders of 50 water licences who use theriver for irrigation.
The Fish Protection Act allows theminister to issue orders to temporarilyregulate water users if fish populationsare threatened.

Inall likelihood you hadno idea when youpurchased it in octo-ber of 2014 that youwere assuming anawesome ecologicalstewardship respon-sibility. And perhapsyou don’t see it thatway even now, butyou should. It could be to your financialand reputational advantage to do so.
Dry Lake is the property where, aseveryone will know, you propose to storeand spread biosolids. Part of your plan forthe property is also the cutting of some ofthe timber on it and the improvement ofroad access through Woodward rd.
It is perhaps not generally known, al-though you know it, that Dry Lake is abreeding ground for the provincially blue-listed Western Toad. The Western Toad isblue listed and of special concern because ofrestricted and declining populations in BC. The Western Toad is important, among otherreasons, as an indicator of the health of a watershed. It has disappeared in many parts of theunited States because those watersheds are under severe threat.
Less well known about Dry Lake is that the property itself, the main access routeinto it and the lands immediately adjacent are nesting grounds for the Williamson’sSapsucker. Federally it is listed as Endangered and is a priority species under the Cana-dian Species at risk Act. It has been known to nest on and around your property since2008. Disturbance of its habitat matters.
I am asking you to do the right thing. Leave the property perfectly intact as it waswhen you purchased it, without cutting down any trees, without disturbing its deli-cate ecology or that of the surrounding area. I challenge you to donate the land to anorganization such as the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Donations of ecologicallysensitive land can be applied against 100% of the donation.
