Walruses
Throughout the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean, a large animal known as a walrus swims. The walrus has whiskers, large tusks made of ivory, and tough gray skin covered with a thin layer of hair. This massive mammal can grow to weigh up to 4,400 pounds and can stretch to up to twelve feet long. Walruses have tusks, which alone can measure up to twelve pounds and be three feet long. Also, walruses store layers of skin known as blubber to stay warm, which can be fifteen centimeters thick. Walruses live mainly on platforms of ice in the ocean or in shallow waters because that is where they are able to find most of their food supply. They can eat up to sixty different types of organisms found in or very near the ocean. Food sources of the walrus include, on occasion, sea birds, as well as various fish, shrimp, mollusks and worms. However, walruses themselves, as big as they are, can also be hunted for food by large marine animals such as orca whales and polar bears. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries more people began to hunt walruses to use their blubber and tusks to trade and make products. As a result, the number of walruses in the wild began to decrease. While the number of walruses in the Arctic Ocean has increased slightly due to new laws protecting them, the animals are still known to be vulnerable by an organization known as the Environmental Protection Agency. It is important to protect walruses because they are known as a keystone species. This means that walruses must be kept alive in order for other animals in the same environment who are a part of the same food chain to survive. ©www.thecurriculumcorner.com

The Invention of Ice Cream
In the past, ice cream took many different forms before being introduced as the delicious dessert you may know of today. Originally, it was claimed to have been eaten by Roman royalty in the 4th century, however, it was actually just ice topped with fresh fruit. Ice cream, with milk and sugar as the main ingredients (similar to modern ice cream) was actually invented in Shang, China in the 6th century. Ice cream was then believed to have been transported from China to European nations along a trade route known as the silk road, and was mostly known as a dish to be served to government representatives in France and Italy. As ice cream was introduced to the United States, it continued to be served primarily to the elite classes and government members. For example, former American Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson presented the dish to their guests in the eighteenth century. In 1774 ice cream began to be served to the public when it was sold to customers for the very first time. Just two years later, in 1776, the first shop to sell only ice cream opened in New York City. The product was originally called “iced cream”, a variation on the name for the drink “iced tea.” Ice cream could not be bought at a grocery store and kept in one’s home until the mechanical freezer was invented in 1926 by Clarence Vogt. Before the freezer was invented, salt was added to the ice in the recipe to lower the temperature. The recipe for this new ice cream was patented in 1832 by Augustus Jackson. The next step to the creation of modern ice-cream was taken in 1897 when the ice cream scooper was invented by Nancy Johnson. Ice cream could now be served with a cherry on top as the cold sweet treat enjoyed by many today.
