March 24, 2015 Dear People of Central New York:

With love to all of the people of the faith communities of our beloved Diocese, I write to inform you

that I have indicated to the Standing Committee my intention to resign as your Bishop Diocesan on

or about October 31, 2016.  At that time I will be concluding fifteen years as your Bishop.  As best

I can tell personally and drawing on wise people around me in prayerful discernment, this is a good

time for a transition to new possibilities for the ongoing health of the Diocese in service of Christ’s

mission. Being your Bishop is an amazing privilege for which I will always be grateful.  It has formed me and

drawn things from me in ways that I could never have imagined.  By grace I believe it has made me

a more deeply faithful person.  This wonderful and, at the same time, crazy vocation as Bishop has

drawn me over the years to an ever-deepening life of prayer resting in Christ as my center and life.  I

have all of you to thank for that.

You may have noted above that I used the word “resign.”  That is the specific canonical word, even

when the intention is retirement.  Even though I am retiring from Central New York, I do intend to

allow myself to be available to the Church in any way that God’s Spirit may call forth.  I am not step-

ping aside for any other position, although it is my understanding that once my resignation is public,

I will likely receive offers for other opportunities.  If it occurs, that will also be a time for discernment

bathed in prayer and open to the Spirit who blows wherever she wills.

The Standing Committee has met with Bishop Clayton Matthews of the Presiding Bishop’s Office to

begin to engage the process of transition to the election of a new bishop.  My hope is that this journey

to new leadership will be healthy and smooth and I trust the Standing Committee to oversee that pro-

cess.  You will hear more from them as time unfolds, as they are canonically responsible for overseeing

this transition.  It also means that even as anxiety for the future may raise its head, sometimes in ways

we do not expect, it is essential that all along the way we keep our hearts centered on Jesus and the

mission to which we are called.  Our Gospel work continues.

The next nineteen months will offer us many opportunities to connect and prepare well for all that is

to come.  For now, know that I continue to be your Bishop and I will continue to work hard among

you and be fully engaged in our mission “To be the passionate presence of Christ for one another and

the world we are called to serve.”  Please continue to pray for me as I pray for you.

 Grace and peace in Christ,

+ Skip The Rt. Rev. Gladstone B. Adams III

10th Bishop of Central New York

Mark your calendars:The Bishop is coming to St. James on May 17th for Sunday worship and coffee hour.

I have written before that one cannot always know what is in store when taking on new responsibilities; certainly this was the case when I volunteered to be warden. It has been challeng-ing in ways that I never could have predicted, but in others it has been a wonderful opportunity. I have really enjoyed getting to know how the parish operates. In particular, I have become so aware of the wonderful gifts that our members bring to our shared ministry that I am both humbled and honored to serve as warden. I am inspired by their passionate commitment, their desire to make St. James’ stronger, and their willingness to step up to do what needs to be done. In the coming months there will be ample opportunities for everyone to lend a hand. We will rely upon our lead-ers more than ever, but we should also extend an invitation to our newer members to contribute in new ways. There are a few long-time members that have drifted away; we should seek them out and invite them back. In short, we will have opportunities to reinvent ourselves, and we should take up that challenge. What do you want St. James’ to be? How can it serve you better, and how can you serve it better? We are a community of the faithful. Our faith brings us together, but it is our community that binds us together. Take time during coffee hour to make new acquaintances, to learn another’s story, to share yours. Take some risks; do something you haven’t done before. You will have many opportunities to hear different voices over the next several months. Add yours to the mix. – Mark Linderman

Getting Closer with Godly Play We have made it through the winter and are well into our spring season (we obviously don’t look through the windows enough in our Godly Play classroom!). In this time we’ve had stories of Advent, baptism, several parables, and an entire set of lessons for Lent. The kids have become familiar with the flow of Godly Play, and have begun to experience the room and the story materials in it as their own. They are also developing their friendships, Christian language, and spiritual-ity. Moving forward, we will have lessons on the Holy Eucharist, the Trinity, Liturgy, World Communion, and Pentecost. Read that list again. Would you be ready to talk to your kids about these topics? It’s a heavy set of lessons; a great mix of mystery and deep tradition. The language, materials, and spirit of Godly Play not only bring these ideas alive visually and through stories, they find connec-tions within us, and within your children, so that the meanings are organic and dynamic. All of this is happening downstairs, while you are upstairs worshiping, but you can still be involved and help us out. Check the “Parents” tab at StJamesClinton.org weekly and read through the accompanying “parent pages” for each lesson as well as a brief description of what we are doing in the classroom week to week. This information will allow you to talk to your children about what they are learning and follow up with your own ideas and thoughts. You can also volunteer to be a “door person,” which is fully described in a link found in the same

“Parents” tab. You can volunteer to provide the “feast” for the classroom. This involves a quick trip to the supermarket to grab a nut-free box of snack items for us to use the coming week(s). At any time, please feel free to grab me during coffee hour or sneak downstairs to the classroom after church to talk when I’m cleaning up. I would also love to chat over email at [email protected] if you have any questions, concerns or ideas. – Annie Aaroe

Outreach As I write this, Holy Week is upon us. It seems like the time passes faster every year! For those of you who have taken the time to contribute to our Lenten Giving program for St. Paul’s school in Haiti, thank you. For those who haven’t, there is still time. Just place your contribution in one of the envelopes in the pews. We hope to announce a generous contribution going to St. Paul’s after the Lenten season. With Lent upon us, can summer be far behind? (Disregard last night’s snowfall as I look out my window!) We will soon be helping the Country Pantry provide Kid Paks for the summer vacation. We hope to announce changes this year that will make the process easier for those of you contributing. Stay tuned next month for more details. – John Pick

St. James is a busy place! On any given weeknight, you can find groups of people in the library, classroom, church, and Parish Hall singing, stretching, meeting, talking, and planning. Over the course of 2014 and the first few months of 2015, there were twenty-three different outside groups that used St. James for meetings and events. These groups included every-thing from dog trainers to musicians to Zumba dancers to community organizers and everything in between. Many groups like the large table and dry erase board in the library while oth-ers prefer the open space in the Parish Hall for movement and exercise. Of course, St. James is used for many meetings and events within the church community, as well. There were sixteen sepa-rate St. James committees that used our meeting spaces last year, which is a fine example of the depth and breadth of work done by the people in our parish. Check out the calendar on the back of this newsletter for a schedule of everything that is offered. There are always oppor-tunities for new programs as well. If you have an idea or would like to reserve space at St. James, just call the office at 853-5359. –Laura Stoll

One Sunday in late March, the Youth Group took a trip to Syracuse where we spent a fun afternoon at the Ropes Course of Wonder Works. Even though not everybody was completely comfortable with heights when we started out, no one came off those ropes for at least an hour. Even Randy and Mike seemed to enjoy the view from up high, while Jan and Rahel stayed on the ground (someone had to take pictures, right?!). After a break for Easter, Youth Group will resume on April 12.

St. James Day School News April themes at the Day School revolve around Animals in Spring and author/illustrator Eric Carle. We will focus on baby animals along with counting and rhyming. Our students are becoming wonderful illustrators and authors by creating their own books. We are still accepting registrations for the 2015-16 school year. If you know of anyone who is interested in information on St. James’ Church Day School, please drop a note in our mailbox or leave a message ([email protected] or 853-5359 x14) and we will send out an information packet. Happy Spring! –Cindy Wirene, Head Teacher
