Vestry News When Chris and I taught 3rd-4th grade Sunday School at St. James many years ago, we had the pleasure of discuss-ing a variety of Biblical topics with groups of bright and eager youngsters. For the lesson of the second Sunday of Easter, we discussed John 20, the story of the proverbial “doubting Thomas,” with the class. Thomas told his fellow disciples that, although they attested to the fact that they had been with the risen Lord, Thomas would not believe that it really was Jesus whom they had seen unless he saw and felt the marks of the nails himself. A week later, Jesus came again to be with the disciples, including Thomas. Jesus instructed Thomas to feel his wounds in order to “not doubt but believe.” Thomas did as instructed and cried “my Lord and my God!” But Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." I must admit that as a “sophisticated” adult, saddled with maturity and education, I know that, medically, a person who has been dead for many hours cannot come back to life. I read this passage every year with a full understanding of Thomas’s reaction. I have sometimes wondered if I would have responded as he did, being burdened with a sense of reality that hinders an understanding that someone could rise from the dead. As I pre-sented this view to our class of youngsters, who were certainly old enough to have a grasp of the medical finality of death, one little girl adamantly insisted that Thomas (and I) were wrong to be doubtful. No matter how I tried to rephrase the dilemma, to portray Thomas in a sympathetic light, she persisted. She could not understand how anyone could harbor even the faintest of doubts. Jesus said that he would return; that was all that was necessary. In other words, belief needed to take precedence over scientific knowledge. The resurrection is not bound by biologi-cal fact. This belief is the core of our Christianity, and I was delighted by, and a tad jealous of, the unwavering certainty of her convictions. The guilelessness of children is a firm founda-tion of their ability to believe without seeing, to understand what at times seems incomprehensible. This innocence is a characteristic that is both endearing and enviable. Jesus tells the disciples in Matthew 18 that it is vital to become like children to enter God’s kingdom. Children accept the Word of God without the intrusion of worldly facts. Their purity of faith is one that I wish for all of us. – Patty Fox

Sometimes after our fellowship events, linens don't make it back to our kitchen drawers quickly. Please leave used lin-ens (towels, tablecloths, aprons, etc.) in the kitchen. Terry Neil checks once a week and takes care of laundering and replacing items. Many thanks!

Spring Potluck It's time for another Parish Potluck! It will be Saturday, April 23rd, following the worship service. If your last name begins with J - P, please bring an appetizer, Q - Z, a salad, A - D, main dish, and E - I, dessert. Sign up sheets will be posted so we know how many to set up for. See you there!

And Sandra Love says regarding the Italian dinner in March, "What an elegant affair. An Italian restaurant worthy of 5 stars created in our own parish hall. The decorations were per-fect, a true representation of an Italian theme. The food was 5 star excellent from salads to main course choices to the dessert.Treat yourself to a free dinner the next time one is offered (donations of any amount can be made if you choose to make one.) Come, fill a table with family and friends, you'll be glad you did.

Fellowship

Thank you to everyone who completed a survey. We are eagerly awaiting the analysis of your input. As soon as we get those results we will complete the Parish Profile and begin look-ing for our next Rector.

Outreach was pleased to participate in the children's Easter egg hunt. By placing their "dollars" from the Easter eggs in a basket of their choice, they were able to donate to help others. (See Youth Activities). We are also looking into the best way to support the school in Haiti. They are in need of a well, but also lacking funds for the children's lunches and teachers salaries. We are awaiting more information from Pere Fred.

Property ManagementUpcoming Renovations and Changes!

In the next few weeks, renovations will start on the Classroom by the kitchen and the Sacristy. The classroom will be renovated (heat!) and turned into a small meeting area and a permanent space for our Godly Play Program--including a small lavatory for the children. The Sacristy will gain more space to the rear and will be reconfigured. In addition, the Administrative Assistant's office will be moved to the current Volunteer Office. All of these changes--and more to come over the summer--will contribute to a more efficient and updated use of our wonderful facilities. – Sharon Williams

Youth Activities Easter was a great success for our youngest parishioners and their friends. The Godly Play room was visited by 13 chil-dren, several for the first time. For the Easter Egg hunt, 100 eggs were hidden in the church and on the grounds. Inside each egg were two pretend dollars, representing $200 donated by our Outreach Committee. The children were given the option of donating the money to one of three organizations, and every child was given candy. According to the wishes of the children, $50 will be donated to the ABC Program, $88 to the St. James' Church Day School, and $42 to the Thea Bowman House. The theme of charity was discussed throughout Lent, and Easter Egg Hunt reinforced the concept by providing an opportunity for the children to donate. Thank you everyone that helped! – Linda Bylica Lark

The Youth Groups have been enjoying some playful time this month. One Sunday we went to Rockin's Jump, a place in New Hartford full of trampolines. Everybody had a great time jumping, playing dodge ball, going through a lazer maze and trying to push an opponent off a narrow beam into a styro-foam-filled pit. Having fun together helps us getting to know each other better, bringing us closer to each other and thus to God. Finding this closeness is an important aspect of our Youth Program.
