From the Library Resource Centre

Book Fair Bonanza

The Fall Scholastic Book Fair was a great success,

providing over one hundred and fifty new and excit-

ing books for our students. Hundreds of parents and

family members visited the

Book Fair on Open house

night. Many thanks for the

generous support of the com-

munity. We are very fortunate

at Herb Campbell to have a

community that supports liter-

acy. The excitement created by the Book Fair bene-

fits our school and also helps increase the love of

reading among teachers, parents, and students.

Plans are already under way for

the next Book Fair in April.

Merci beaucoup and thank you!

Climate for Learning and Working

For the Peel District School Board, creating safe

and inclusive schools is just as important to stu-

dent success as creating comprehensive academic

programs. With student success as our top prior-

ity, it’s important that we work together to en-

courage acceptance so that students are given

every opportunity to achieve to their fullest po-

tential. We want our students and staff to learn,

work and develop in environments that are nur-

turing, engaging, respectful and inclusive. There

is adequate research to support the fact that when

students and staff feel welcomed and accepted in

their schools, they are more likely to succeed.

Ontario has designated the week beginning on

the third Sunday of November as Bullying Aware-

ness and Prevention Week to help promote safe

schools within a positive climate for learning and

working. Our theme is “Choose Action.” During

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week – No-

vember 18 - 22, 2013 – PDSB staff, students,

board personnel and parents will be participating

in a variety of activities to learn more about how

they can “Choose Action” to create caring and

inclusive schools to combat bullying and its ef-

fects on achievement and well-being.

Within the Peel District School Board our

strength is in our diversity. Valuing diversity and

inclusion is something that all Peel schools en-

courage students to do. It is not something that we

pause to teach—it is embedded in all we do and

teach every day. Recognizing Bullying Aware-

ness and Prevention Week is just one way for us

to reflect and strengthen our focus towards

achieving equity for all students and staff. Thank

you for your support as we continually strive to

make Herb Campbell Public School and our

world an inclusive place that celebrates diversity.

Prevention Week, visit the Ministry of Education

Winter bus safety

The following winter school bus safety tips

will help to keep your child safe throughout

the winter months.

Allow extra time to get to your bus stop.

Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in

the early morning and late evening.

Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses

need extra room to stop when there is snow

and ice.

Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the

bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or

road surfaces.

Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and

boots will keep you warm.

Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other chil-

dren waiting for the bus.

Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in drive-

ways or on the street.

Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone

could fall down on the ice and get hurt.

On very rare occasions, buses are late because

of weather conditions or mechanical problems.

Talk to your child about what to do if the bus

is late. Here are some suggestions:

When possible, wait with your child for the

bus.

Make sure your child knows a phone number

where he can reach you or another trusted

adult.

Teach your child how and where to get help.

Talk to your child about what a "safe" stranger

is.

Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system

so your child has someone to wait with for the

bus.

Prevent the flu. It’s in your hands.

Hand washing is the most important way to

prevent the spread of infection. Always

wash your hands with soap and water when

they are dirty.

Clean your hands before:

touching your eyes,

nose or mouth

touching/preparing

food or drinks

eating or drinking caring for someone in

your home who can easily get sick (baby, elderly or someone who has an

unhealthy immune system)

first aid

Clean your hands after:

touching pets or other animals

touching raw meat, particularly chicken

touching surfaces such as a railing or

grocery cart

touching money

touching objects sick people have

touched

touching blood or body fluids such as

urine, vomit or feces

contact with those who have a cold, the

flu, diarrhea or virus of any kind

changing diapers

wiping your own or a child’s nose

sneezing or coughing

using a facial tissue

using the washroom

removing gloves

cleaning gardening

What to do when you cough or sneeze:

cover your mouth and nose with a tis-

sue or your sleeve

put used tissues in the wastebasket clean your hands with soap and water or a

hand sanitizer

live, interactive online math help by visiting

www.homeworkhelp.ilc.org. Homework

Help is free, real-time math tutoring by cer-

tified Ontario teachers.

Students can log in from Sunday to Thurs-

day, between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. for indi-

vidualized confidential math tutoring. There

students can join and see what questions

other students are asking, watch the tutors

draw on the whiteboard – and ask their own

question for on-the-spot help.

Students will also find 24/7 discussion

rooms, video lessons and commonly asked

questions. Other online math resources in-

clude math games and a virtual locker,

where students can save their work.

Homework Help is a project funded by the

Ministry of Education.

Help your child prepare for tests

Many students will become anxious at the

thought of writing a test. Anxiety about an

upcoming test can affect a child's behaviour,

thoughts and actions. Here are some ways

you can help minimize anxiety at test time:

Organize & Prepare

Encourage your child not to leave assign-

ments, studying and homework to the

last minute.

Schedule time for review and work on

assignments each day.

Establish a regular time of the day for

homework, studying etc.

Make the home a homework-friendly en-

vironment where learning is regular

routine.

Remove distractions like the television,

stereo, telephone when studying.

Tell your child to make sure tests and due

dates are marked in their agenda.

Practice

Encourage your child to think about

‘what, when, where and how’ when

preparing/completing assignments.

Develop practice tests and help them an-

ticipate questions.

Review previous exercises.

When appropriate, encourage your child

to pair up with a friend to review in-

formation and brainstorm.

Build learning into family activities—

suggest keeping a journal, writing a

report or a news article about family

events, outings or trips.

Be in the know

Check out the curriculum for your child’s

grade level (available as PDF files at

www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum)

Ask your child’s teacher about major top-

ics studied and how these topics are

structured— homework, assignments,

exercises

Use your child’s agenda to communicate

with their teacher—ask questions,

check for homework tips, etc.

Continuing Education Interna-tional Languages 2013-2014

program

Elementary international languages courses are

available to currently enrolled Peel District

School Board students. Instruction is provided

in Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Eritrean, Greek,

Gujarati, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Malayalam,

Mandarin and Mandarin-Pinyin, Marathi,

Nepali, Persian, Polish, Punjabi, Serbian, Sin-

halese, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu and Vietnamese.

The program is available at 22 locations in

Brampton and Mississauga. For details on

which languages are available at what loca-

tions, please visit our website at

www.peelschools.org/conted/il.

How do I register my child? Registration is an

online process accessible through the website at

www.peelschools.org/conted/il. Registration

for elementary classes remains open until Feb-

ruary 28, 2014. Enrolment is limited at each

location and classes with insufficient enrolment

will be cancelled.

French Immersion

Is French Immersion right for my child?

Are you thinking of registering your child for

French Immersion (FI)? For the 2014-15

school year, parents must register children for

entry into grade 1 FI by 4 p.m. on Friday,

Jan. 31, 2014. Registration for FI will be done

through an online registration form that will

be available on Nov. 22 at

www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/

French/registration.

What is the FI program like? What are the

advantages and disadvantages of the pro-

gram? How can you tell if it is the right

choice for your child?

One way to help answer these questions is

to attend the information meeting at the FI

school your child would attend. Meet the

principal and some of the teachers from the

school. Hear about the program and

have an opportunity to ask questions.

Talk with some parents whose children

are now in the program. A parent in-

formation night will be held at each

FI school in Peel on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.

Registration process

A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This

means that a specific number of spots are

available for students entering grade 1 FI. If

the number of students registered by the

deadline exceeds the number of spots in

grade 1 FI, a lottery system will be used to

identify students gaining entrance into the

grade 1 FI program.

All students who make the registration

deadline will be placed in a lottery and as-

signed a rank using a computerized random

selection process. Spots are not assigned

on a first come, first served basis. Once

students have been assigned to all available

spots, remaining students will be placed,

again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.

Some students will be automatically placed

in grade 1 FI. To find out if your child does

not need to participate in the lottery, and for

more information about the lottery and

waitlist processes, visit

www.peelschools.org/parents/programs/

French/registration.

Ontario EcoSchools Recertification

The Herb Campbell 2013-2014 EcoSchools Team has formed

and officially met as a group on Tuesday, October 29th,

2013. They will meet on a monthly basis to set goals and plan

new environment-related initiatives, to implement action

plans to meet their goals, and to assess their results.

Our EcoSchools Team aims to be representative of the school

community by including student grade-level leaders (who

applied for their positions), administration, interested teachers

and staff, and parents. The overall goals of our EcoSchools

Team are to reduce our community and school's environ-

mental footprint and to educate the children and community

regarding environmental responsibility and stewardship.

If you would like to be part of this exciting group and make a

positive difference within our local school community, please

contact Wendy Sutherland (our EcoSchools Team Leader) by

phone at school 905-838-3952. We are proud to have been

certified as Ontario EcoSchool in previous school years and

look forward to the collaborative teamwork of our school

learning community in recertifying again this year.

For more information about Ontario EcoSchools, please visit

their website @ http://www.ontarioecoschools.org/ . Here are

some specific environmental learning, initiatives, and actions

connected to our 2013-2014 Ontario EcoSchools recertifica-

tion.

At-School Grown Pumpkin Contest Last Spring, all grade 3 and Kindergarten students planted the

Three Sisters vegetables to learn about Native People food

culture (Corn, Beans, and squash). We used the corn to make

Husk Dolls and decorated the school front entrance, and we

use the Jack-O-Lantern Pumpkins to decorate our classroom

for Halloween. The best decorated classroom pumpkin won a

prize!

EcoWalls Purchased with a generous grant from the Peel

Ecoschools Initiative, the 3 EcoWalls are large

bulletin boards where students and teachers can

show off their environmental and citizenship col-

ours. It's all about our community and the good

things with do for the environment. When you visit

our school, don't forget to have a peek at our

EcoWalls. You can see art pieces created by stu-

dents and inspired by nature, facts posters about

what's happening out there as Nature prepares itself

for each seasons, and pictures and information

about activities going on in school.

Waste Free Lunch Challenge This past month, students at Herb Campbell par-

ticipated in the Waste-Free Lunch Challenge (Oct

21-25). We worked very hard at bringing our lunch

in reusable containers and help reducing waste at

school. We also discovered that buying in bulk not

only help reduce waste at school but saves mom

and dad money on the grocery bill!

Our Herb Campbell Community Garden

The planting and harvesting of vegetables men-tioned above provides an example of the many curriculum-integrated learning opportunities in our all season Herb Campbell Community Garden which includes; outdoor classrooms in our butter-fly and tree gardens, and connected pathways through natural meadow and forest habitats on our 9 acre school site. Extending beyond our com-munity garden is our shaded stone circle which provides another outdoor learning space for our school learning community. And to see specific examples of our curriculum-integrated environ-mental learning, you might want to visit our blog @ http://herbcampbellcommunitygarden.blogspot.ca/ From 2008-to present, funding support to estab-lish, expand, and maintain our outdoor learning spaces has come from grants and awards received for our support of environmental learning, initia-tives, and actions involving the participation of our school learning community of students, staff, families, and community members. We would also like to thank our Herb Campbell Community School Association for their funding support to continue providing environmental learning oppor-tunities for our school learning community.

Hawks Find Silver Lining in Flag Football Final

Late October signals an end to a busy flag foot-

ball season. Our intramural program consisted

of 16 teams and over 100 players in Grades 6-8.

In the intermediate final, the Bills defeated the

Tiger Cats by a score of 14 - 6. Meanwhile in

the junior championship, the Mustangs topped

the Lancers with a 32 - 12 result. Thanks to all

our student referees and players for a great year!

On October 30, the boys’ flag football team

travelled to Caledon Central for the

N.P.P.H.E.A. Division 4 Flag Football Tourna-

ment.

In round robin play, the squad compiled of per-

fect record with 3 wins and 0 losses. After earn-

ing playoff victories over Mount Royal and In-

gleborough, the team faced Caledon Central in

the championship game. It proved to be a defen-

sive contest with both teams utilizing their obvi-

ous quickness and keen instincts. Unfortunately,

the Hawks could not muster enough offence and

dropped a tough final game by the score of 6 - 0.

Mr. Sutoski and Mr. Mitchell are proud of the

silver medalists and congratulate them for dis-

playing strong skills, teamwork, sportsmanship,

and dedication. Congratulations to Nathanyal,

Cooper, Josh, Cameron, Brayden, Matthew,

Adam, Connor, Simon, Hayden, Devon, Braden,

Quinton, Shaun, Ryan and Tyler.

Many of the boys will turn their attention to the

upcoming volleyball season in November and

December.

Girls Flag Football

Once again the girls flag football season was a

great success. The girls all showed a lot of dedi-

cation and team work throughout all of their

games during the tournament this week. In true

Herb Campbell fashion the girls clenched a sec-

ond place finish, bringing home some hardware

for the fifth year in a row! Mrs Flood and Mrs

Coulson are proud of the silver medalists.

Congratulations to the following girls: Abiola,

Alex, Caitie, Claudia, Cayleigh, Emma, Hannah,

Katelyn, Karlene, Issie, Keren Lyndze, Riana,

Taylor and Shenessa.

Go Hawks go!

Intermediate Cross Country

On October 22nd, 2013 30 intermediate

students travelled to Heart Lake Conserva-

tion Area to participate in the NPPHEA

Cross Country Fall Run. The conditions

were perfect for running, crisp and cool

with a tail wind at the finish line.

All athletes are to be commended for the

time and effort they dedicated towards

training for this event. Due to their com-

mitment, the Herb Campbell Hawks ex-

celled and had some truly remarkable re-

sults.

At the end of the day, the Hawks brought

home eight top 20 finishes, one podium

finish and two overall team medals.

Congratulations to all runners!!
