CLIL activities
listening, speaking
Peer teaching
- ak je preberaná problematika už trochu známa a nie je problém so slovnou zásobou,
každý žiak si naštuduje ďalšie informácie z daného textu a zreferuje ich ostatným
Line-up activity
- Aktivita s kartičkami – Queueing
- čísla a číselné hodnoty sú súčasťou viacerých predmetov, preto je užitočné ich
precvičovať
- každý dostane kartičku s číslom alebo nejakým číselným vyjadrením a podľa toho sa
musí správne postaviť do radu, od najmenšej hodnoty po najväčšiu. Čísla a číselné
hodnoty môžu byť rôzne. Príklady kartičiek v rámci jednej aktivity:
345 14,245 40,234 ¾ ½ 0. 123 0.4
Odd one out - very popular CLIL activity
- used for classifying, categorizing, putting into groups,
- can be used in a wide range of subjects, e.g. History, Biology, Geography
Snowball activity
- mingling activity
Jeden žiak číta definíciu a kto má slovo, musí ho povedať. Potom prečíta svoju
definíciu
- príklad dvojice kartičiek:
.... a volcano a sudden violent shaking of the
ground, typically causing great
destruction, as a result of
movements within the earth's crust
.... an earthquake a mountain or hill, typically
conical, having a crater or vent
through which lava, rock
fragments, hot vapour, and gas are
or have been erupted from the
earth's crust.
Revision activity
- učiteľka číta zhrnutie preberaného učiva, hlavné fakty. Ak je veta správna, žiaci ju
preložia do rodného jazyka a zapíšu. Ak niečo vo vete nie je správne, vetu opravia
a zapíšu do zošita
- nakoniec vety v rodnom jazyku preložia a porvnajú si texty
Do not finish the word
- aktivita na opakovanie slovnej zásoby
- každý žiak dáva po jednom písmenku do slova, no jeho písmenko nesmie sformulovať
celé slovo
- napríklad: prvý žiak povie „H“, druhý „A“, a ak tretí povie „M“, vypadol, lebo „ham“
je slovo, (aj keď mal na mysli napríklad „hamster“...).
Príklad sledu aktivít na CLIL hodinách:
CLIL hodina 1:
- brainstorming
- key words and their explanation
- labelling a picture diagram
- snowball activity
- labelling a diagram from a short text
- sequencing – putting processes in a right order
- cloze text
- next lesson – revision – loop activity
CLIL hodina 2:
- brainstorming
- matching pictures – words
- matching sentences – words
- introducing new words
- mutual dictation
- labelling the diagram
- vocabulary games
What is CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)? - teaching and learning the content of the subject and a foreign language at the same time (dual
focus approach and two groups of objectives)
- can be realized as a team teaching – a language teacher and a subject teacher
- uses different methodologies, resources
- takes a lot of time, preparation for a teacher and a student
4 Cs of CLIL
CONTENT
COMMUNICATION
COGNITION
CULTURE
Teaching vocabulary in CLIL
- giving key words is important
- glossary
- matching activities – match a word and its meaning or a word and a picture
- crosswords
- half crosswords
- brainstorming
- vocabulary games
- recycle the words, use them as often as possible
Materials in CLIL Sources:
- library
- the Internet
- BBC bitesize website
- Youtube
- teachers need to adapt materials or make their own materials
- if the text is difficult, tasks must be easy (yes/no, T/F)
Using visual organizers in CLIL
- visual organizers are information transfer – from text to a table
- they recycle information a different form
Visual organizers: (see in the scanned materials)
1, line graph 9, process diagram
2, bar chart 10, tree diagram
3, pie chart 11, mind map
4, table 12, venn diagram
5, Carrol diagram 13, time line
6, grid 14, story board
7, flow chart 15, cycle
8, quadrants 16, binary
Assessment/Evaluation in CLIL
- formal – marks
- informal – done all the time
- formative – assessment following the process of learning
- summative – opposite to formative – a big exam at the end of the year
- what is normally used is a combination of all types of assessment
- self-assessment and peer-assessment is also very useful, especially after setting the
ILP – Individual Learning Plan where students express what their targets in learning
are
General Language development from the lessons
- to know the ropes (to know how the things are)
- to wear different hats (to have more than one job)
- F.E. (further education – pre- University education)
- H.E. (higher education – University education)
- to have a tongue in cheek (don’t really mean something)
- to jump the queue (predbiehanie sa v rade, v Spojenom kráľovstve absolútne
neprípustné)
- to pull someone’s leg (to tease someone in a funny, friendly way)
- to be capable (to be able to do and organize things very well)
- to go bananas – to become very excited about something
- pc – politically correct
- that’s a no brainer – it’s obvious
- a non starter – a stupid idea
- to pile it on – to put some more food on the plate, usually by a host
- Cheers! can also mean: Good luck, hello, good bye, thank you
- to be a teacher’s pet – to be a teacher’s favourite pupil
- a pet hate / a peeve – a top hate
- to be a petrol head – to be crazy about cars
