Convenience Carts Now Available at LibraryCLIFTON PARK – The Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library now has convenience carts for patrons, due to a thoughtful ges-ture by Kathy Kohler. She wanted to remember a dear friend who was an avid reader and library user who recently passed away from bone cancer. This friend had to use a cane but want-ed to make her trips productive and would take many items to tide herself over until her next visit. It was getting difficult to juggle all the materials and stay steady on her feet. Kohler felt there must be others in this situation and made a donation to the Library in Carol Raphael’s name to purchase one cart. The Friends of the Library liked the idea so much they purchased three more. The carts can be found just beyond the Welcome Desk on the way to the Returns window. (A)

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be pub- lished after the favor is granted. Favor granted. J. J.

What Is Corned Beef?

At least once a year people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish culture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cab-bage. Many people under-stand the “beef”part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the “corned”part.Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available.According to the Depart-ment of Agriculture, the word “corn”comes from Anglo-Saxon times when meat was dry-cured in coarse “corns” of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it.Corned beef brines today con-tain more than just salt. They may have different spices and flavorings to add to the taste of the meat.

History Of The Man Behind St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17. Although St. Patrick became the patron saint of Ireland, many people assume the role of being Irish for the day and participate in the revelry of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Many of these revelers celebrate without fully understanding the man behind the holiday.

Despite having such strong links to Ireland, St. Patrick did not begin his life on the Emerald Isle. St. Patrick was born to wealthy parents in Britain in the fourth century. His given name was Maewyn. His father was a Christian deacon, but there is no evidence that theirs was a particularly religious family. It is surmised that the role of deacon was more for tax benefits rather than a holy calling. Some history suggests that Patrick considered himself a pagan in the early years of his life. At age 16, after being taken to Ireland as a prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family’s estate, Patrick began rethinking his religious beliefs.

While working alone as a shepherd, he turned to religion for solace and adopted the name Patrick. He began dreaming of convert-ing the Irish people to Christianity during his captivity. According to his historical writings, he heard a voice in a dream, which he believed to be God. God told him it was time to leave Ireland.

Patrick escaped his captivity after six years by walking 200 miles to the Irish coast. He boarded a ship and fled back to Britain. Patrick had another holy revelation that he was to return to Ireland as a missionary. To prepare, he began to study at a monastery under the authority of St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre for 12 years. He was ordained a minister and traveled back to Ireland with the purpose of assisting Christians already living in Ireland and to converting the Irish to Christianity.

Patrick had an intimate knowledge of Irish culture due to his captivity. He was also familiar with traditional rituals. Therefore, instead of trying to remove all that was customary to the Irish people, he began working some of their rituals into his Christian teachings so they would seem more natural to the Irish. He managed to convert many pagans, and he and his disciples preached and converted many more. Patrick helped to build churches all over Ireland.

By the end of Patrick’s life, the majority of Ireland embraced Christianity. He lived the life of a wanderer and endured much suf-fering and poverty. Patrick died March 17, 461.

Because the Irish descended from a long line of storytellers who had a rich tradition of oral legend and myth, there are many tales of Patrick that abound, many of which are untrue. He did not scare actual snakes out of Ireland nor did he take part in many of the embellished tales. He did succeed in making a big historical impact, which is why he entered into sainthood and had the date of March 17 established in his honor.

Did You Know? There are different times in a driver’s life when he or she may have to pull over on the side of the road. Whether a flat tire has derailed the trip, the driver or a passenger is experiencing mo-tion sickness or you find the car isn’t performing correctly and it warrants a look under the hood, pulling over on the shoulder may be necessary.

It can be difficult to pull over smoothly and safely on a busy highway, especially when you are in a stressful situation, such as a mechanical emergency. But it is in your best interest to remain calm and follow a few procedures. First, slow down and put on your right-turn signal to indicate you will need to move into the right lane. Some people prefer to put their four-way-flashers on after they have successfully cleared the lanes and are ready to navigate onto the shoulder. Try to select a spot where you are not on a bend or where there is poor visibility or your vehicle cannot be seen by other drivers on the highway. You do not want to be injured while exiting or attempt-ing to work on the pulled-over vehicle. Drivers should keep an emergency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing flares, emergency triangles or cones, a flashlight, batteries, a poncho, booster cables, duct tape, a utility knife, cord, a blanket, and first aid supplies in the car as a pre-caution. Each item serves its own unique purpose.

The Canadian Automobile Association recommends staying inside the vehicle, especially on a busy road. Tow trucks and police vehicles typically cruise busy stretches of road and help may arrive in a matter of minutes. Those who have a roadside assistance plan membership can use a cell phone to make a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police arrive.

Did You Know? The drive-in movie theater was the brainchild of Richard Hollingshead, Jr., an auto products sales manager at his father’s Whiz Auto Products store. Hollingshead wanted to combine his passion for automobiles with his love of films. After testing different parking configurations and imitating weather conditions in his own driveway to simulate the drive-in movie experience, Hollingshead filed for a patent for the drive-In theater. He received the patent on May 16, 1933. The first drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933, in Camden, N.J. The price of admission was $.25 for the car and each person inside. Drive-in theaters peaked in popularity in the 1950s, when there were roughly 5,000 drive-ins operating across the United States and Canada. According to Drive-Ins.com, currently there are about 365 drive-ins remaining in the United States and 55 in Canada.

Renting 101: Things To Know Before Renting

A Car Renting an automobile can be practical for a variety of rea-sons. City dwellers with easy access to public transporta-tion might not own a vehicle and might choose instead to rent a car when the need aris-es. Men and women who are leasing a vehicle might rent a car for a long trip to avoid ex-ceeding the mileage restric-tions that come with their leases. Even drivers who own their vehicles might rent a car in an effort to preserve their own vehicles for resale.

Regardless of an individual’s reason for renting a car, there are certain things all renters should know before taking the keys to their next rental.

• Your credit card company might be insuring you. Driv-ers who have rented a car in the past are aware that rental company employees attempt to sell renters insurance for the vehicle before hand-ing over the keys. While it’s definitely smart to be insured, you may already be insured if you’re paying for the rental with a credit card. (Note: Many rental agencies re-quire a major credit card for customers to book a reserva-tion.) Credit card companies provide this coverage at no extra cost to you, which can save you a substantial amount of money, as many rental agencies charge by the day for insurance. Consult your credit card company before renting the vehicle to see what, if any, coverage they offer. Some cards may not offer complete coverage, but even partial cover-age will still save you money.

• Multiple drivers will cost you money. If you’re about to embark on a road trip and you plan to have more than one driver, you can plan to pay more as well. Each extra driver you add to the rental agreement will cost an additional fee. If you can make the trip with just one driver, then you will save money. Do not list one driver but allow others to drive the rental, as this might negate any insurance coverage you purchased from the rental agency or any coverage provided to you by an existing auto insurance policy or credit card company.

• Return the car with gas in the tank. The rental agent will tell you how much fuel needs to be in the car when it’s returned. The car might need a full tank upon being returned, but more likely that figure will be about one-quarter of a tank. Remember that figure (which should be listed on your rental agreement) and do not come in below it. You will pay a lot more per gallon if the rental agency has to put gas in the tank than if you just remember to do it yourself.

• Avoid renting at the airport whenever possible. Though there might be some exceptions, renting from an agency located at the airport is almost always more expensive than renting from an off-airport location. That’s because the rental agencies are required to charge customers an airport fee, which can be considerable. If you’re staying at a hotel in town, consider renting from an agency close to your hotel as opposed to one at the airport. The savings might be considerable, and some locations might even come and pick you up at the airport if you so desire.

• Don’t sleep through the vehicle inspection. Before you take the vehicle off the lot, a customer service representative from the rental agency and you will examine the vehicle for any damage, whether that damage is significant or minor. If you don’t pay attention during this examination and the company representative misses any damage, you could very well be blamed for that damage when you return the vehicle. Company employees may be disinterested in the inspection, so it’s up to you to notice and report any damage before you take the keys.

Renting a vehicle can be a convenient solution for travelers who need a car. But drivers should exercise their due diligence to ensure they’re getting the best deal possible.
