John Coll – Marine MorphosisJohn Coll is one of Irelands leading figurative sculptors. After an initial career as a marine biologist, he found his vocation as a sculptor 26 years ago.

He has since created many iconic public sculpture works including monuments to the writers Patrick Kavanagh and Brendan Behan in Dublin, a monument to Countess Markievicz in Sligo and more recently a 4.5 metre piece at the Claddagh in Galway celebrating its heritage.

His work is to be found in many collections including NUI Galway, the National Library, Dublin, Stanford University California and Boston College, USA. The marine environment has been a continuing source of inspiration through his career and is reflected in the work for this exhibition where he explores the interaction of man with the marine world. johncollsculpture.com

Donald Teskey R.H.A. – The Connemara Folio (A Visual Documentation) Donald Teskey was born in Co. Limerick and came to prominence as an artist through his skill as a draughtsman during the 1980s. Since 1992 he has crafted out a substantial body of work as a painter of the landscape and more recently the ruggedness of the western seaboard.

Sometimes working on a very large scale, his images reflect his response to the formal elements of composition: shape, form and the fall of light. The results are powerful images of instantly recognisable parts of the Irish landscape, with large abstract passages and surfaces which articulate the relentless, energetic and elemental force of nature.

He is a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy and Aosdána. He is represented in major collections, including the Arts Council of Ireland and The Irish Museum of Modern Art. He exhibits with the Rubicon Gallery, Dublin. rubicongallery.ie/artists/donaldteskey

Ballynahinch Castle/Occasional Press ProjectEvery two years an eminent, contemporary Irish artist is invited to take Ballynahinch Castle as a base and over a series of visits to visually explore the Connemara landscape. Each artist is required to venture into the diverse terrains surrounding the Castle and to bring back to us evidence of their particular encounters.

At the conclusion of the period the body of work created over this extended residency is documented in a limited edition artists’ book, published by Ballynahinch Castle and Occasional Press, each book giving us a new insight into a wild and beautiful landscape.

Donald Teskey’s A Connemara Folio is the second book of the series and is published in a standard paperback edition of 500 and in a limited hardback edition of 150 which include an original hand painted intaglio print numbered and signed by the artist. Changing Faces – Exhibition of photography by Charlie McGeever.

Changing Faces is an artist led project funded by the Arts Office of North Tipperary County, The Arts Council and Claire County Council which explores through the lens of the artist, the visual fabric of a small town on the border of Tipperary and Clare and celebrates its diversity through an exhibition of portraits of local people capturing the essence of life in the Ballina/Killaloe area.

In these remarkable portraits, the artist Charlie McGeever presents a moment in time in the history of Ballina/Killaloe. He has captured the diversity of life, the quiet contributors, the service providers, those working the land, each making their mark and re-asserting the importance for a diverse and unique society.

Speaking about the background to the project, Charlie states that he became fascinated with the multi-layered make-up of the town of Ballina/Killaloe and observed on a daily basis, the mixture of old and new, physically represented by an ever-changing landscape and the ecletic mix of outlooks and values held by the people living there. Speaking of the exhibition, Charlie believes that these images represent a tiny moment in time in the lives of the people of Ballina/Killaloe, an area of constantly changing faces.

Jazz-blues / nigel mooney and his bandNigel Mooney is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s leading jazz singers and guitarists. A charismatic figure on the Dublin jazz and blues scenes since the early 1980’s, his Gripewater Blues Band spearheaded the blues

movement in Ireland and drew many fans of both jazz and the blues.

A self-taught musician, Mooney was influenced by the blues from an early age and his hard-bop style of guitar playing is expressive and melodic with a

bluesy groove. He possesses a warm and rich tenor voice and has an almost flawless sense of pitch.

His first album, All My Love’s In Vain (Rubyworks) was released in 2005 to critical acclaim and has

become one of Ireland’s highest selling albums by a jazz artist. The single, Beautiful Day charted on the Irish hit parade and still receives regular airplay. He

It’s time to dig deep for a very worthy cause.

The galway hospice foundation provide a wide range of essential Specialist Palliative Care Services that include Home Care, Inpatient Care, Day Care, Bereavement Support and Education. Last year, their Home Care team made a total of 5,354 Hospice at Home visits across Galway and the Aran Islands, and in the same year, their Day Care service saw 1,086 attendances. Their Home Care and Day Care services cost €1.5 million annually to provide and are funded entirely by voluntary contributions. They depend on these voluntary contributions to provide these services which are free of charge for patients and their families for as long as they are needed.

We have a huge variety of music from a collection of talented musicians and poets such as Ger Wolfe, Martin Finke,

Ultan Conlon, Tom Lyden, Fiachra O’Regan, Sophie Lavoie, Lara Norris, Marie Walsh, Aidan Ward, John Durning and many more. Your MC for the evening will be Maurice O’Scannail. indiefolk / goodWin sandsGoodwin Sands is an indie/folk band from Utrecht in the Netherlands. Blending various acoustic instruments and diverse musical styles, they create their own versatile and discreet sound.

At the end of 2009 the band released their first E.P. entitled Builders & Artists, which enabled the band to play countless shows within the Netherlands and paved the way for three short visits to foreign shores.

During the early months of 2010 the band began to experiment with more instruments and ideas, which in turn led to the recording of a second E.P. Time Well Spent in Antwerpen. The recordings were documented in both MP3 and video format and released as a video-E.P. on the band’s website.

The addition of a 1970’s campervan has helped the band reach pastures new in the last months, including a short tour through Belgium and Germany. fonn aniar / tune from the WestBreanndán Ó Beaghlaoich, vocals, button accordion, Tommy Peoples, fiddle Laoise Kelly, harp.

Brace yourself for a clash of the titans as a trio of trad’s finest join forces for this unmissable tour. With three distinct regional styles going head-to-head, every tune promises to be something of an adventure. Representing the Dingle Peninsula is genial giant Breanndán Ó Beaghlaoich, whose fiery button accordion playing and heartfelt singing echo the stormy beauty of the West Kerry coastline. With three highly-acclaimed solo albums to his name, Ó Beaghlaoich is also held in high esteem for his work with the groups Boys of the Lough and Beginish and his collaborations with the Chieftains and fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh. Winner of the first ever TG4 Traditional Musician of the Year Award, trad legend Tommy Peoples brings the rabble-rousing Donegal fiddle style to the party. After recording classic albums with the Bothy Band, Matt Molloy and Paul Brady in the 1970s, Peoples’ compositions and solo performances have inspired a generation of fiddle players. Equally influential is virtuoso harpist Laoise Kelly, who has breathed new life into the national instrument with her reinterpretation of the O’Carolan canon. Though Kelly has toured the world, collaborating with everyone from Seamus Heaney and Kate Bush to The Chieftains, Sharon Shannon and Dónal Lunny, don’t be surprised to hear her Mayo roots to the fore as she gets those feet a-tapping!. “The most maddeningly nourishing, elevating, and mesmerising Irish music you’ll hear today” Earle Hitchner, The Irish Echo, on Breanndán Ó Beaghlaoich (with Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh).

“Tommy Peoples gracefully occupies a prime authoritative position on the top shelf of Traditional fiddle players…one of the few traditional players whose music regularly elicits from his listeners words such as passion, tension, ferocious, dark, emotion, grip, electric, friction, tautness, rawness, beauty.” The Journal of Music “Kelly virtually reinvents the instrument with her rhythmic and melodic intricacy, her syncopation and undulating chords and harmonies . . . she’ll have you swaying with her profound musicality.” Irish Times

triple-bill / ger Wolfe utlan conlon martin finke ger WolfeCork singer-songwriter Ger Wolfe has worked hard at earning his reputation as one of Ireland’s most unique contemporary singer-songwriters.

Since 1998 he has released six albums of original music on Raggedy Records - Word And Rhyme (1998), Ragged Ground (2000), Heaven Paints Her Holy Mantle Blue (2004), The Velvet Earth (2006), No Bird Sang (2009) and Fréamh; Root (2011).

“Ger Wolfe’s songs always raise my spirits” Christy Moore

“The poetic soul of Ireland” John spillane

With a singular approach to his craft he has charmed many listeners with songs such as ‘The Lark Of Mayfield’ and ‘The Curra Road’. His songs have been recorded by North Cregg (‘Summer At My feet’ sung by Fiona Kelleher is the title track of their third album), by Karan Casey (Curra Road) and by Mike McGoldrick with Sharon Shannon, among others.

ultan conlon Galway man Ultan Conlon, a popular voice on the Irish gig circuit, has released his highly anticipated debut album Bless Your Heart. The debut was critically acclaimed by HotPress magazine and described as ‘the most impressive Irish debut since Damien Rice’s O’ by The Evening Herald.

Legendary folk singer John Martyn liked his songs so much he sang on Ultan’s beautiful track ‘Really Gone’, which was to

be Martyn’s final release before his untimely death in February of last year. Ultan has since recorded a Martyn song, ‘Back To Stay’, which will be released on Aug 16th as part of a tribute album featuring artists such as Snow Patrol, Paolo Nutini, Beck, The Cure and David Gray.

martin finkeMartin Finke was born in Germany, grew up in Connemara and lives in Kinsale. He has been touring and putting out records independently since the start of the millennium. His latest album, Make Daylight, uses found sounds, vinyl crackle, homemade microbeats and his acoustic guitar. He writes love songs about losing track of time, driving and people who look

great together but belong apart. There is strictness and tension in the accidental loneliness of these bright, hopeful songs.

Performing beautifully arranged songs and instrumental pieces from throughout the Celtic regions including Ireland, Brittany, Asturias and Louisiana as well as original compositions that stem from a deep

traditional sensitivity, skillfully executed and soulfully delivered, their sound is fresh and unique with their strong dynamics, driving rhythms and buoyant harmonies. Their music will draw even the most fainthearted listener into the passion that they put into the music they play – magical, joyous and uplifting! “The arrangements are world class, as are the musicians, and Ireland is always somewhere in the mix.” Irish Music Magazine.

The Alan Kelly Gang will be joined by internationally acclaimed, Scottish songstress, eddi reader, (formerly of Fairground Attraction) and Trashcan Sinatra’s guitarist and songwriter, John douglas for this very special Irish/Scottish 2011 collaboration tour of Ireland. The tour will mark the release of The Alan Kelly Gang’s first official band album, ‘Small Towns & Famous Nights’ which features a beautiful evocative song from Eddi Reader called Connemara.

triple-bill / music on the gig-rig The bands appearing on our Gig-Rig today are in order of appearance South Ember, Seanie Vaughan and Band, and The Mick Carey Band.

South Ember are an up and coming band from the west of Ireland. Formed in 2009, they write their own material and play covers ranging in genre from Rock to Reggae and Funk. They were the winners of the 2010 Summer Search a Band Competition.

Clifden Arts Festival is delighted to welcome to the rig local man Seanie Vaughan and his band. The fact that local man Seanie’s debut album ‘Altered Vision’ entered the Irish indie charts at no. 5 in early

February may have come as a surprise to many. However, on listening to the album it is clear how this came about and it is also clear that this is an album which will grow and grow. We are delighted to have him join us here today on the rig.

Finshing off for us on the rig today will be the hugely popular local group The Mick Carey Band. The band deftly plays a huge mix of classic and alternative music covers from Radiohead, Kings of Leon, Nirvana to the Rock classics of Neil Young, Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bruce Sprinsteen and much, much more - The Mick Carey Band never fail to energise their audience!

rock-folk / seanie vaughan and band Local man Seanie Vaughan’s debut album Altered Vision entered the Irish indie charts at no. 5 last February. At the launch of the album in Dublin’s Button Factory, crowds were captivated by his mellow tunes with sombre lyrics, but were engaged and brought to their feet by a variety of up-tempo, almost anthemic songs. It was a performance that was honest, up-lifting and energetic.

Seanie’s influences couldn’t be from a wider spectrum. He was influenced at a very early age by singers who would come into the family pub in Clifden, Galway and these could range from immigrant’s who sang of the hard life of a labourer abroad to blues singers with their melodic tones singing American blues.

Seanie listened and studied the music of Irish folk singers such as Christy Moore, Freddie White and Luke Kelly and these influenced him heavily

over his early teens. In his later teens and now into his mid-twenties, Seanie pays homage

to those early influences but also speaks of Rory Gallagher and The Waterboys among his influences.

comedy / kevin mcaleerComedy night with the great and hugely popular Irish professional stand-up comedian Kevin McAleer. We welcome back the hilarious Kevin – ‘the man who put the dead back into deadpan!’

Kevin McAleer first came to prominence on the RTÉ television show Nighthawks which began broadcasting in the late 1980s. McAleer became known for his three minute sketches of surreal rustic tales told in his slow County Tyrone drawl. He wrote a column for the Sunday Independent during 2009. McAleer’s most recent show is entitled Chalk and Cheese.

“If you’re any younger than me, you probably won’t have a clue who Kevin McAleer is, never mind the old TV show Nighthawks that made him an overnight comedy sensation in the ‘80s. But if, like me, you’re old enough to remember, then McAleer may just be one of your comic heroes with his dry wit and bizarrely quirky observations of Irish life.”
