These gardens were created at the end of the 18th
century. They are known to naturalists throughout the
world for their large collection of indigenous and exotic
plants.
Of particular interest is the talipot palm, which is said to flower once, after 60 years, and then die. There are also
tortoises here, some are 100 years old.

The village of Chamarel in southwest Mauritius is home to two natural
wonders - the magnificent Chamarel Falls and the
coloured earths of Chamarel or the 'Seven Coloured Earth‘. The earths are particularly unusual colours (blue, green, red, purple and
yellow. They were created by volcanic rocks that
cooled at different temperatures, the earths form beautiful patterns of

Mahebourg, on the south-east coast of Mauritius, has a proud history. It is here that the first colonisers set foot on the
island several centuries ago and it is the perfect representation of a typical
Mauritian village. Its fauna and flora are well represented in I’le aux Aigrettes bird sanctuary. Fishermen come here every day with their catch. Shops and street peddlers have all sorts of spices and
delicacies.
