Sage Patanjali, the great saint of India, was a great scientist, psychologistand a doctor of medicine. Patanjali

created the 'Yoga Sutras' as away of compiling the alreadyexisting teachings of yogainto a format easier to followand understand, which madehim to be popularly known as 'The Father of Yoga'

THE YOGA SUTRAIt is the essential text on yoga philosophy, compiled by sage Patanjali nearly 1800years ago. It contain 196 Sutras, divided

between four chapters. These Sutras talkabout the aims and practice of yoga, thedevelopment of yogic powers and

finally - liberation. The wisdom inthis text has proved timeless in thisworld filled with distractions andsocial pressures.

Practitioners use this textas a clear guide in the journey ofmastering the mind, and a clarifier for understanding its truenature and purpose. According toYoga Sutras - yoga is a process ofcontrolling the mind in pursuit of liberation.

In Yoga Sutra’s Second Pada - the Sadhana Pada, theeightfold path is called ‘ashtanga’, which means ‘eight limbs’

(ashta=eight, anga=limb). These eight steps basically act as theguidelines on how to live a meaningful and purposeful life. They teach about self-discipline and attention towardone's health, and they help us to acknowledge thespiritual aspects of our nature.

YOGA SUTRA - THE 4 PADASSAMADHI PADA SADHANA PADA VIBHUTI PADA KAIVALYA PADAConsciousness Ways to attain Yoga Power/Dharna Liberation,

single point, supernatural power

Super consciousness Kriya yoga + concentration & achieved through Ashtanga Yoga Awareness ascetic discipline

YamaThe first limb, YAMA deals with

one's ethical standards and senseof integrity, focusing on our behaviourand how we conduct ourselves in life.

The five yamas are:Ahimsa: nonviolence; Satya: truthful-

ness; Asteya: non-stealing;Brahmacharya: continence;Aparigraha: non-covetous-

ness

NiyamaThis is about self-discipline and

spiritual observances.The five niyamas are:

Saucha: cleanliness; Samtosa: content-ment; Tapas: heat; spiritual austerities;Svadhyaya: study of the sacred scrip-

tures and of one's self; Ishvarapranidhana: surrender

to God

AsanaAsana, the postures prac-

ticed in yoga. Through the prac-tice of asanas, we develop the habit ofdiscipline andthe ability toconcentrate, both

of which are nec-essary for medi-

tation.

PranayamaPranayama is translated as

"breath control," designed to gainmastery over the respiratory process

while recognising the connectionbetween the breath, the mind, and theemotions. It is "life force extension,"

yogis believe that it not only reju-venates the body but actually

extends life itself.

DharanaAs each stage prepares usfor the next, the

practice of Pratyahara cre-ates the setting for Dharana,

or concentration. Havingrelieved ourselves of outside

distractions, we can nowdeal with the distractions

of the minditself.

DhyanaMeditation or con-templation, the

seventh stageof ashtanga,is the unin-

terrupted flowof concen-tration.

SamadhiPatanjali describes thiseighth and final stage of

ashtanga - Samadhi, as a state of ecstasy. At this stage, the

meditator merges with his or her point of focus and transcends the

Self altogether.

According toPantanjali, thecompletion ofthe yogic pathis what, deepdown all humanbeings aspireto: Peace

Embracing PressureE

veryone knows the formula for pressure isforce/area, but very few truly understandpressure. One way to do that is to go scuba

diving, and feel the crushing pressure of theocean on your head. The alternative, however, ismuch easier and not as enjoyable. That's right, the pressure of academics. More specifi-cally, the Board examinations, a riteof passage in every student's life.

Come Board year, all yourtime is either spent studying orstressing about the fact thatyou're not studying.

But is all this pressure reallythat bad? I might not rememberevery minute of slogging for the class Xboards, but I vividly remember the daythat the results were announcedwhen I could proudly say I hadpassed the Board examinations, that too in first division.

The solution is not to eliminate thepressure, but to embrace it. That's the

only way you'll get to see the stunningmarine life, scuba diving!

And what's it like being a Board stu-dent these days? Well, I'm citing

physics formulae as analogies. Youtell me . . .

BHAVYA GOYAL, Class XII, ModernAcademy, Lucknow

Plan your schedule and allocate more time for learning difficultportions.

Believe in yourself and convince yourself that you can turn thedifficult portion simpler in a few days and ways.

Break them into easy components, work on them till every-thing is clear as crystal and move on.

Seek guidance of teachers when you reach a bottleneck.

Note-making is an effective method. Solve previous years'question papers: Understand the concepts while studying.

Revise as many times as possible. There is enough time to plan and

organise your study schedule. Push your-self harder and make sure you are confi-dent to face the Boards. All the bestdear friends!

Confidence is the KeyEverybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree,it will spend its whole life believing that it is stupid.” – Albert Einstein.

First of all, I want tothank the CBSE fordividing the course

of exams into two terms due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Exams are not for every-one. You could be the bright-est bulb in the box and stillnot shine as brightly inexams. As the Board yearprogresses, we feel that wedon’t get enough time tolearn all the subjects. Boardexams are a stepping stonefor our professional futureand hence we must try toaddress our weak points. Here are some tips that helpme tackle them.

1Name the type of crystal defect which is pro-duced when NaCl crystal is doped with MgCl.

ANS: Cation vacancy defect or non-stoichiomet-ric defect or impurity defects.

2What is the formula of a compound in whichthe element 'Y' form hep lattice and atoms

of 'X' occupy 1/3 r" of octahedral voids.

ANS:

3State Henry's law. Why do gases always tendto be less soluble in liquids as the tempera-

ture is raised?ANS: Henry's law states, 'The partial pressureof the gas dissolved in a liquid is directly pro-portional to its mole fraction. pgas= KH xgas, where xgas is the mole fraction of gas and pgasis the partial pressure of the gas.

When temperature is increased, KH (Henry'slaw constant) increases, therefore, the solubilityof gases in liquid decreases.

4Why does a solution containing non-volatilesolute have higher boiling point than the

pure solvent? Why is elevation of boiling point acolligative property?ANS: When we add a non-volatile solute to apure solvent, the vapour pressure of solutiondecreases, therefore, it is to be heated to high-er temperature so that its vapour pressurebecomes equal to the atmospheric pressure, i.e.its boiling point will be higher.

Elevation of boiling point is a colligative proper-ty because it depends upon the number of parti-cles of solute and not on nature of solute.

5Calculate the time to deposit 1.5 g of silverat cathode when a current of 1.5 A was

passed through the solution of AgNO3. (Molarmass of Ag = 108 g mol-1, 1 F = 96500 C mol-1).ANS:

6 Define rate constant (k). Write the unit of rate constant for the

following:(i) First order reaction(ii) Second order reactionANS:Rate constant is equal to the rate of reactionwhen molar concentration of reactants is equalto unity.(i)s-1 is the unit of first order rate constant.(ii) L mol-1 s-1 is the unit of second order rateconstant.

7The rate constant of a first order reactionincreases from 2 X 10-2 to 8 X 10-2 when the

temperature changes from 300 K to 320 K.Calculate the energy of activation (Ea). (log 2 =0.301, log 3 = 0.4771, log 4 = 0.6021)ANS:

9How do you convert the following:

(i) Phenol to 2-hydroxyacetophenone(ii) Ethyl chloride to methoxy ethane(iii) Acetone to 2-methylpropan-2-ol

ANS:

10(a) Write the mechanism of the followingreaction:

cated.

1. CH3CHO, C6H5CHO, HCHO (reactivity towardsnucleophilic addition reaction).

The great Indian mathematical genius, SrinivasRamanujan, always played with numberseven though he did not have any for-

mal training in pure mathematics. This iswhat fascinated me as I read about hiscontributions to the field of mathematics.

Ramanujan developed hismathematical research in isola-tion and his papers were pub-lished in English and Europeanjournals. He truly inspires meas I too find numbers intriguing. I

love to solve math problems and watch a number ofvideos on this subject. I like to solve a new math problem every day. I have also realised that we usemathematics a lot in our our day-to-day life.

Ramanujan’s life story has taught me that one neednot go through the rigours of formal training to excel in

the field one is passionate about.

and computer labs where-as the private schools haveintroduced coding in theprimary schools. If stepsto improve the conditionwill not be taken, it wouldwiden the digital divide inthe country.

NEP 2020 is a paradigmshift in the education poli-cy of India. It has liberat-ed education system fromthe stereotype structuresand has democratised theentire education system. Itis a new dawn on the hori-zon, ready to usher in thenew era of education ifNEP 2020 is implementedin its true sense.

National Edu-cational Pol-icy (NEP)c o m p l e t e sone year andin this yearwe all tried

to understand the vision andimplications of the NEP 2020.NEP and its implications havebeen debated and deliberatedand finally collated on differ-ent forums. The overriding ob-

jective of education is the allround development of a stu-dent’s personality. Though theword ‘holistic development’ haslost its significance because ofits out of the context overuse. But it truly means developingall faculties of a child that na-ture has bestowed on him. Theprime purpose of education isto develop him physically, men-tally, morally, emotionally, andspiritually so that he blooms

in all aspects. This great goal can be

achieved by adopting ‘acrossthe curriculum approach’ andbreaking the barriers of thestreams and the subjects. If sci-ence develops ‘a spirit of en-quiry,’ mathematics develops‘analytical skills and litera-tures fosters the emotionalside, it is the integration of allthat will cultivate an all-roundpersonality. To make subjects

engaging, the students must beinvolved in learning process.

One of the distinctive fea-tures of the NEP is to open thehigher education to the foreigncounterparts which would notonly globalise the Indian edu-cation system but will also in-fuse excellence. To keep pacewith fast-pacing world, Indianeducation needs to be re-vamped to meet the needs andexpectations of the progressive

an intense last-eight tie in Tokyo on Monday.A day after the Indian men’s team entered the

Olympic semifinals following a 49-year gap, theworld no. 9 women’s side also produced a phe-nomenally gritty performance to make it way intothe last four.

Drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur rose to the occasionwhen it mattered and converted India’s lone penal-ty corner in the 22nd minute to surprise the Aus-tralians. Coming into the match, the odds were to-tally against India as in world no.2 Australia, amighty unbeaten opponent, awaited them. But theIndians, determined to prove a point, produced astrong and brave performance to eke out the nar-row win over the Hockeyroos.

Outpouring of emotions

■ How much it meant for the team and Indian hock-ey in general could be gauged from the emotionsthat were on display after the final hooter went off.The players screamed, hugged each other, and got

into a huddle with their Dutch coach Sjoerd Mari-jne with tears of joy rolling down their faces.

Aggressive approachsurprises Australians

■ The Indians started slow off the blocks but grewin confidence as the match progressed. Australiahad the first shot at the goal but India goalkeeperSavita did just enough to deny Amrosia Malone, whose slap shot from inside the circle hit the post. The Indians thereafter adopted an aggressive ap-proach and caught the Australian defence off guardquite a few times.

■ India’s pace and determination seemed to havesurprised the Australians as they panicked whiledefending and were lucky not to have conceded agoal in the first quarter.

■ The Australians pressed hard in the second quar-ter but India secured their first penalty corner andGurjit, who had a disappointing outing so far in thetournament, rose to the occasion and converted thechance with a low flick to stun the Australians.

■ The Indians were bold and courageous while de-fending as minutes later, Deep Grace Ekka got a vi-tal stick to keep out Emily Chalker’s strong hit fromclose range.

■ Down by a goal, the Australians attacked withnumbers after the change of ends. Australia se-cured three back-back-to-back penalty corners soonbut the Indian defence, led by Savita and Deep GraceEkka, stood like a rock in front of the goal.

WORDS FAIL ME:

Hockey legend Dhanraj Pillay on Sunday

fell short of words to describe the feeling

after the Indian men’s hockey team

registered a scintillating 3-1 win against Great Britain

in the quarter-final of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.

With this win, India inched closer to end the 41-year

medal drought as they booked the semi-final berth

with the help of goals from Dilpreet Singh, Gurjant

Singh and Hardik Singh. The overall effort ensured

India a place in the semi-final against World

Champions Belgium. “What a show Team India!

#Hockey Well deserved Victory. Words fail me as I try

to compose my emotions for the semifinals against

#Bel Wishing my blue army the very best, you are on

the threshold of making history. Good luck,” Pillay

tweeted. Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and former

India batsman Virender Sehwag heaped praises on

the men’s hockey team after their sensational show

on Sunday. Coming back to the game, India suffered

a blow when skipper Manpreet Singh received a

yellow card in the dying minutes, but Hardik scored

in the 57th minute to extend India’s lead. In

the final quarter, Great Britain tried

hard to score a goal after

breaching the Indian defence.

The side even won a penalty

corner but PR Sreejesh made a

fine save to keep India on top.

We are so happy, it is the result of hard

work that we put in for several, several

days. In 1980, we qualified for the Games

but this time, we made the semifinals. It

is a proud moment for us. This team is like

a family, we have supported each other

and found support from the country as

well. We are very happy.
