Abraham LincolnCHEOUGH the perspective of enlightening years the figure of Abra-

ham Lincoln stands out perennially larger, nobler and more appeal-

ing against the background of American history.

The chief merit of a democracy is that it makes men. No de-

mocracy in the world's history has brought forth greater men than that

under which it is our privilege, and should be our pride, to live. It is they

who^constitute America's strongest claim to the consideraf

encomiums of mankind.

Washington is revered in all lands as the paragon of patriots; a -great

white shaft of human mold, typifying, above all men who ever have lived,

unselfish and unswerving devotion to a great cause.

Hamilton was ranked by Talleyrand—himself one of the master in-

tellects of his age, and the shrewdest of observers—above all the great menwhom he had known and with whom he had contended, including Napoleon,

Hamilton's portrait hung in his study until he died, bearing an inscription

in his own handwriting, "That he had loved Hamilton and that Hamilton

had loved

Jefferson, as the author of the immortal Declaration and the champion

of the plain people for equal rights and against special privilege, has s

plied the inspiration for all men who have struggled since his time aga

oppressive power.

These men, principally, constructed the American Union. f '

And Abraham Lincoln preserved it.

But for Lincoln, "government of the people, by the people and for

people" might have perished from the face of the earth. Through his

recting genius, unflinching courage and infinite patience the faith of the

patriots of 76 that "a nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the prop-

Lincoln was a martyr long before he was stricken down by the assas-

sin's bullet. He was a martyr to misrepresentation, ridicule and calumny

If his spirit had not been one of the noblest that ever dwelt in humanbreast it would have succumbed under its weight of woe long before his

mission was accomplished. But as we contemplate him now, afar from the

strife and tumult of his time, he seems to have been appointed of God for the

work which he performed. How else explain that unfaltering purpose, that

beautiful serenity and that charity which was for all?

If one were looking for a keynote to Lincoln's character he would strike

it, we think, in those ever memorable words of the second inaugural: "Withfirmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive

That sentiment explains the success of Lincoln's career. For all the

great problems which confronted him he had but one method of solution-

find what is right. He never tried to think of the easiest way to gel

around difficulties, but always of the right way to overcome them.

It is not given to all men to see the right in great emergencies as

clearly as Lincoln saw it. He himself reverently acknowledged that cer
