September wasbonkers andthankfully, thingsare much morecivilised this month! We launched a new course atthe beginning of October,“Social Media – BusinessBionics” and it was very wellreceived. We immediatelybooked two further courseswith Helen from ColdicottTraining on LinkedIn andTwitter and these will run inDecember. Look out for theemails winging their way toyour inbox! The SAGE coursecontinues to run, we’re in week5 of 8 now and the students willbe looking toward their examday with enthusiasm, I’m sure!We also hosted Peter Roper’s“Peppermint Hangout” and our“Business Support” day, both ofwhich, in their own way, designed to provide help andadvice to local businesses.

On the subject of help andsupport, I must point you all tothe page on the LEADERproject. At this month’sBusiness Networking meetingwe had a talk by Pete Banford, from Shropshire AONB abouttheir LEADER project. Hespoke very well and explainedhow the scheme will run andhow businesses may benefitfrom the grant funding they willhave available from Jan 1st2015. Although there wasn’t a

huge crowd attending, it’sworth mentioning thateveryone there has rebookedwith Pete to discuss their ownideas and plans to see howLEADER might help access thefunds to implement their ideas.I’m happy to forward his detailson, just give me a shout!

At the Business Networkingmeeting we were without PeterRoper, again, as he’s swannedoff on holiday! Sunny Portugalis his destination and we hopethat he and Anny manage torecharge their batteries andreturn full of vigour andenthusiasm! Happy hols!

Next month’s meeting will seePeter back as host (hopefully)and we will also have anotherspeaker – Gary Dimmock fromThe University ofWolverhampton and he will tellus about their EurekaMoments! Another pot offunding and help from quite adifferent source, so again, forthose that have plans ofexpansion or requiring help, come along and have a listen.

William from Crystal Thoughthas been re-constructing ourwebsite, and I’m hopeful that itcan be launched in the not toodistant future. Watch thisspace and don’t point out thespelling mistakes!!!

Sue plods on with the TradeCard 2015 and is also updatingeveryone’s information on thewebsite so that when we do golive with the new site it has upto date information on all of us.Well done Sue!

Vicki, our apprentice, is makingherself indispensable, byupdating all our booking formsand course information sheetsso that all are branded in thenew Cleobury Country style, including our emails, brochures and eventually, thewebsite.

The Cleobury Country FarmersMarket in September saw 170visitors and 16 stalls so not abad turnout at all. Lastweekend was our Octobermarket and we had the applepressing kit onsite to presseveryone’s lovely apples! There was a real buzz about, helped along by theappearance of the CrookedSteeple Morris, who cloggedbeautifully for us! We saw 212visitors during the morning hadsported 18 stalls, so hopefully,we should start building up toa really good turnout inDecember now.

As you are aware, earlier this

year Government announced

a package of support for

properties and businesses

who were affected by

flooding during last winter.

Although we have received a

number of applications, we

are concerned that some

affected properties have not

taken up this opportunity to

improve the resistance or

resilience of their home

against flooding.

The Repair and Renew grant

can be used for measures

such as airbrick covers, flood

doors and barriers and non-

return valves to reduce the

chances of flooding to a

property or for measures to

reduce clean up time and

costs if flooding is inevitable.

The grant available is up to

£5000.

We understand that some

households/businesses have

been reluctant to submit claims

for the Repair and Renew grant,

fearing that an application/claim

will result in increases in future

insurance premiums/excesses.

Please visit the following link to a

letter from the Director General

of the Association of British

Insurers allaying such concerns

and encouraging the take up of

this grant to improve resilience

against future flooding;

epa i r -and- renew-grant -

scheme

We would like to remind you

that the deadline for

applications and invoices to

be returned to Shropshire

Council is 31 January 2015

and that this date is fast

approaching. If you are aware

of any properties which

flooded between 1

December 2013 and 31

March 2014 and feel that they

might be interested in the

Repair and Renew Grant,

please ask them to contact us

as soon as possible or to

download an application

form from the Shropshire

Council website;

We must mention that

funding for property flood

protection is not available

under normal circumstances,

so any property owners who

believe they may be eligible

should consider this

opportunity to protect their

property.

Support is on offer toeligible businesses torealise their Eureka!Moment through:• Free business briefings

and updates

• Free one-to-oneconsultancy support toidentify opportunities tobe more innovative

This project aims tosupport businessesfrom Micro through tothe larger SME’s withinShropshire,Herefordshire,Staffordshire andWorcestershire.

It has been identified thatas a very rural area, with alarge proportion of Microbusinesses potentialinnovation/change projectsare often smaller is size/costand businesses are unableto benefit from some of theother innovation grantsavailable regionally andnationally, where minimumgrants are often £10,000. Inaddition a condition ofthese grants is theguarantee of additionaljobs often in excess of oneyear. Other schemesdemand that new productsare almost market ready.

The Eureka! Momentinnovation and growthprojects hopes to fill thisgap, with grants of £2k -£10k available toimplement projectsidentified at a review, orwork with businesses tobring new products ideasinto reality.

No one likes to pay tax.

The formation of the USA was asa result of a revolt against tax.

When William the Conquerorlanded on these shores hecommissioned the DoomsdayBook in 1066, which was a landsurvey to calculate how muchhis new kingdom was worth.

In 1799 Pitt the Youngerintroduced Income Tax to payfor the war against Napoleon. Thanks Pitt, now we can be surethat ever since, every peasantpaying a portion of what was his,and everyone liable to pay taxhave tried to pay less.

The richest among us have triednumerous clever schemes, some legal and others not, to tryand con the taxman, gettingricher if they succeed.

The latest one making the news, has famous politicians, Artists,Film stars, Actors and manyothers all falling foul of ascheme, to save them millions of£.s. This time the Revenueappear to have won. But haveno fear, there will be others.

There are plenty of perfectlylegal ways of the wealthy to getout of paying tax. Tax havensOffshore, equity swaps andtrust funds.

Just turning themselves intoincorporated businesses (LtdCo), and paying themselvesDividends instead of PAYE savesthousands.

And, they do have very cleverAccountants and Solicitors forcompany, all very legal.

But let’s not give them a badtime as the facts speak for themselves. The top 1% of earnersstill pay, around a quarter of thetotal £150 billion of Income taxon 11% of total income.

Investment banks and Hedgefunds have their share of foreignworkers who prefer to have theirmoney paid offshore to avoidtax. But, statistics do show thatCity workers overall to pay theirshare of Tax. Of 30 areas payingthe most income tax, 28 of themare in the ‘stockbroker belt’outside London but withincommuting distance.

However, the same cannot besaid for their employers. Around10 years ago the big banks werepaying their traders in gold. Thiswas not just in the interest of theemployees, but it also allowedthem to save on their NationalInsurance liability.

Elmbridge in Surrey, the‘Beverly Hills’ of Britain, paidmore than £1.2 billion in income

tax in the 2011-12 tax year, morethan 100 times the corporationtax paid by Google in 2012.Amazon’s UK subsidiary paid£2.4 million in corporation tax inthat year. On sales of £4.3 billionApple reported £68m in profitsin the UK in 2012, paying notone penny in tax.

Apple is one of the USmultinationals to havestockpiled $2 trillion of profitsoffshore, preferring to borrow inthe bond market for cash theymight need domestically.

If Microsoft, Pepsi GE and Applebrought any of these offshoreheld profits back home to theUS they would face Corporationtax at 35%, the highest in theWestern world.

This high rate is also behind the‘inversion perversion’ anothertax avoidance strategy on anepic scale, where large UScompanies pay billions to buyforeign competitors simply toshift their HQ’s somewhere elsewith a lower tax rate, includingthe UK. They also suffer noCapital Gains on the purchase.

Dodging tax started a long, long time ago

It happens every year, stock markets tumble, sometimes more thanothers and when one fallsthe others all fall likelemmings. BlackWednesday, was October1987, the financial crash of2008, again October, andtrue to form the worldstock markets have againfallen this week, with theFTSE100 in the 6200range, down from nearly6900 just a few monthsearlier.

Uncertainty, and feardrives markets. There is alot of both right now, witheven the mighty GermanExport machine showingsigns of slowing down. The US market has beenspooked by the Ebolavirus reaching it’s shoresand with other negativenews around the globe, they started the rout, weduly followed and Europewent along for the ride.

Selling out when marketsfall is about the worstthing you can do, becausethe underlying value of allthe large companies willstill be there when brokersdecide to start buyingagain. If you sell youconsolidate the loss.

This is the time to enterthe market and buy in theareas you feel are strong. If there are wars aroundthen buy into thecompanies making thebombs and fighter planesetc. fear of Ebola, buy intothe companiesmanufacturing theprotective gear. You getthe picture. This is NOTadvice, markets fall as wellas rise and pastperformance is just that.
