DARIO CALONACI

Graphic designer with more than three years of experience, I love to serve lo-cally, nationally and internationally to all-sized and shaped clients. I’m passion-ate about clean, minimalistic and effec-tive user-centered design. My work mostly consist in the creation of unique, custom crafted branding solutions.

When not designin’ logos/building builds, I’ve been workin’ on websites, photoma-nipulations, illustrations, icons, ui/ux design, fashion-related things (including clothes and clothing tags), interior de-sign, packaging and CD/magazine covers for a variety of clients and agencies.

JOVAN VELKOSI

I was born in Macedonia back in 1987, then moved to Gothenburg, Sweden, with my en-tire family when I was six years old, where I got my education. I recently studied Vi-sual Communication at the Linnaeus Univer-sity, where I got my Bachelors Degree. Dur-ing the time at the University, I was the only student ever to be granted a 6-month

paid internship in Japan.

I focus primarily in illustration, but my sub speciality is with package and book

design.

My inspiration comes mostly from pop cul-ture and superflat art. What makes me draw is mainly the motivation, usually by sugar rush and a feeling of being indestruc-tible. However, right now I guess I have learned to keep a consistent pace and pull through. It is like what Chuck Close says: “Inspiration is for amateurs, the rest of us just show up and get to work.” Of course, I have my influences that I learned working from, including great people like Ippei Gyoubu, Rockin’ Jelly Bean, McBess, HARVEYJAMES, and a whole lot of other art-

ists.

It’s been around a year since I started with the website and it has just been one great project after another. It feels very odd to do the only thing imaginable in your life for a living. Keeping that feeling

going is what motivates me, I guess.

15A unique and interesting approach to il-lustration is one of the fundamentals of a good illustrator. Jovan has all the skills and creative flair to take himself and his work to the next level. Remember

you saw it here first!

TOMMY BRABHAM

I was made in Eastbourne in 1991, moved to the north in 2010 to studied and graphic design in Manchester. Currently one half

of the creative digital studio Flood (@floodbydesign).

I usually specialise in brand development & website design but the examples I've submitted reflect my personal style rather than my professional work, although more recently their paths have crossed. I know it's pure cheese but most inspiration comes

from music.

Motorbikes are my big thing. I've just come back from a trip to the Isle of Man, it didn't go quite as planned but I had a good few runs over the TT mountain course. Ended up coming back with a roof-tack

sticking out of my back tyre.

Presently, future is in the middle of a love triangle With calamity, and me in the corner I’m starting to feel uncomfortable Should I douse the spark or fan the flames or merely think of clever things to say? Oh the more I try to separate, the better it feels to get right in the way

And I try so hard, to get out of the way Of that, runaway train Oh how, I do love the rain

Seems to be, that being in the middle is starting to get me in trouble

Tried to run away, but they have a talent for making trouble seem enjoyable

Oh the more I try to separate, the better it feels to get right in the way Should I douse the spark or fan the flames or merely think of clever things to say?

And I try so hard, to get out of the way Of that runaway train Oh how I do love the rain Oh, and I try so hard To get out of the way Of that, runaway train Oh how I do love the rain

We love Tommy’s unique approach to graphic design. In an ev-er-growing mass of Swiss in-spired design, that often fails to capture the imagination of the viewer, Tommy’s work is a breath of fresh air.

Hello. My name is Craig Minchington and I go by the alias ‘Adora’. I am a graphic artist and designer from South Wales, currently living in Bristol.

I am employed by Epoch Design, creatively artworking all things Coca-Cola; and I love it. In addition to my day job, I try to produce as much of my own personal design and illustration work, which has led to me exhibiting work at the RWA, Bristol Design Festival and in 2008 I helped set up FiascoDesign.co.uk. I have also been lucky enough to work on designs for Nestle, Unilever, Mitchell & Butlers, P&G, DV8 Magazine and VIP Bristol.

I love using lighting effects, bright colours and glows in my work to try and bring things to life. However, I am always looking to progress as a designer and I enjoy learning new techniques which has led to me currently teaching myself Cinema 4D. I’m hooked!

I get a lot of inspiration from my friends and work mates and I’ve had the pleasure of sharing studio spaces with some amazing creative people such as Iain Sellar, Ben Steers, Lee Ellis and MO75. Working in that sort of environment is great because you all help each other out and teach each other new things. I also love searching through creative blog sites for inspiration, especially sites like depthcore, abduzeedo, and computer arts.

As well as my creative interests I am a Dinosaur enthusiast, a massive fan of Lionel Richie, I try singing in the band Posterboys and am a centre midfield general on the football pitch (that last one is a slight fib).

JESS GURR

I’m Jess Gurr, aka. Wildfire 198, a Writer & Illustrator from Bristol in the (sometimes)

sunny UK.

I like to create shiny, pretty things in the form of illustrations, in particular, character design, concept art, and print & design work. As well as this, I also enjoy crafting interesting wordy bits, writing copy for print and web, and editorial pieces, articles & reviews. Oh, and I blog

a bit too.

My artwork tends to have an emphasis on mixing hand-drawn and digital elements, and I’m hugely influenced by Japanese culture. Most of my character work features anime/manga and comic book style people. I also do a bit of design work, focusing on advertising materials, like posters and flyers etc, as well as designing business

stationery and logos.

I’ve done editorial illustrations for online magazines such as Amelia’s Magazine and Lost in the Multiplex; I also like to write editorial pieces for such cool people as Lost in the Multiplex, Skwigly Magazine and AnyForty Magazine, including

news articles, features and reviews.

Having grown up in Bristol, I graduated from Bath Spa University a few years back with a degree in Creative Writing. Not wanting to give up my love of illustration and design, I carried on doodling all through uni, working as the Creative Director of Ambidextrous, the university’s literary society. Once I graduated, I got a promotion at work (Team Rubber, to be more precise) to become the Online PR Assistant - this is where I gained a lot of experience in writing copy for B2B and B2C communications. I also worked for the University of the West of England’s Research, Business and Innovation

department as their sole Copywriter.

A little while later, I decided I wanted to go it alone and start up my own business doing what I love: writing and illustrating. Since then, I’ve worked with some lovely people on amazing projects, such as designing brand identities, illustrating pretty things, creating marvelous website copy, and taking part

in some charity design projects.

In my spare time, I’m working on writing and illustrating a children’s book, with my own little character, Mimi. I’m also writing a novel and a feature-length screenplay. Alongside that, I like to bake lots of scrummy treats, go out photosnapping interesting things and take part in fun

sports like cycling and bouldering.

GARUFF!

I have studied Graphic Design for 5 years and have recently found a love for editorial design. I love being able to take some snaps, include some text and then seeing the final outcome in print form. I have always tried to be experimental and try to think out of the box with my design as I believe it gets you noticed. I think Graphic Design is about getting a message across in a range of different scenarios, whether it be fun, educational or just random - all my work I aim to inform the audience of what I am doing.

JOHN CHAPMAN

Studying BA(Hons) Graphic Communication at Bath School of Art & Design, I concentrate on the communicative aspect of graphic design and typography. This encompasses, but is not exclusive to, branding, retail

and commercial design.

I have a keen interest in exploring how psychological strategies, namely elements of Gestalt and psychogeography, can affect the role of the creative process, and therefore enable designers and practitioners to work and communicate with an increased awareness. This way of thinking forms the basis of all the work I do, but becomes especially relevant when addressing brands

and how brands communicate.

As I work in a variety of media, printmaking is currently an important aspect of my work, and has been exhibited locally and in London. This process often involves photography or typography. My way of thinking, and therefore my work is often visually simplistic, concentrating on absolute communication and visual calm to achieve succinct yet beautiful solutions.

JASON SMITH

I’m an illustrator and character designer. Mainly self taught, I love to work with shapes and symmetry, as well as bright co-lours and an absence of outlines. I like to keep things simple. I take my inspiration from shapes - well, pretty much anything

you can see a pattern or shape in, like the carpet, the clouds... The cheese on my

pizza.

Other influences would come from all the old cartoons I used to watch as a kid, even those that are on nowadays. You’re never too old for a cartoon! I mainly like working with Adobe Illustrator, but some-times use Photoshop to add textures. My creativity doesn’t just stop at the com-puter though.I also like to customise vi-nyl toys, design and make paper crafts,

plushie toys and cushions.

I like to try my hand at most things, as you never know when you might be able to use the newly learnt technique in your artwork! I recently set up a colouring book collaboration for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. It is made up of 26 different artists, including myself, each of whom followed my brief exactly and pro-duced a very high standard of work. I’m really proud to have put the project to-gether and to have worked with so many tal-ented artists. Future projects include a clothing brand I look to launch very soon and a few collaborations mainly charity-

based again.

RICHARD DAVIES

I’ve been working as a graphic designer in the South Wales area for over ten years, predominantly working with print and corporate identity and the odd website. However, my evenings and whatever spare time I have are spent working on various freelance illustration work. Over the last twelve months, my work has started to get more recognition online which in

turn has produced more freelance work.

I have spent a couple of years experimenting with different styles and techniques, trying to find something I'm comfortable with. I've dabbled in everything from vector illustration to 3D work but eventually went back to one of my original strengths – painting and drawing. About a year ago I invested in a Wacom tablet and since then there's been no looking back. All my illustrations are painted entirely in Photoshop which gives me the opportunity to introduce textures and experiment with colour

correction.

You will see a lot of poster work in my portfolio. Posters give me the chance to combine the two sides of my work – illustration and graphic design. I'm also a huge film fan which explains my love for film posters. I love looking at the great poster artists such as Bob Peak, Drew Struzan and Richard Amsel for inspiration. As well as traditional poster art, there is so much great contemporary digital art around. The Depthcore collective is an obvious example but also the likes of Android Jones and Grzegorz Domaradzki are all pushing the boundaries of

digital illustration.

It's great to be inspired by all these talented artists but I aim to carve out my own style and more importantly enjoy what I do. I think it's important to keep up with new trends but not at

the expense of your own techniques.

We love Richard’s work - a true modern day artist, producing contemporary inspired work, which blurs the boundaries between traditional media and the digital age. A genuinely unique approach to design and digital art, which is very rare.

I studied graphic arts at Liverpool John Moores University. Specialising in graphic design, I graduated in the summer of 2011. I find inspiration from everywhere, such as

people, places, film, good & bad graphic design,

science fiction, data visualisation, photography, other designers and so on. I love to create infographics of subjects

that haven’t been documented in a graphic form. I also love photography and

listening to Joy Division.
