president’s message

Happy Holidays everyone! What a great year! Our kickoff dinner was bigger than ever, we had an amazing Beautification Awards, and our Golf Tournament was awesome! Our chapter membership increased this year most recently with the addition of Ian Gaffney of IGL. Welcome to the club, Ian!

The recent state convention was in PASO ROBLES!!! Right in our own backyard. The convention was very well attended and really showcased our area. We had a tour of the caves at Halter Ranch Vineyard and tasted their amazing wines.

We learned about some of the changes at CLCA's state level—CLCA had its most successful year in a long time finan-cially and membership wise. We had a great state Trophy Awards banquet, in true Paso Robles style, in a barn in San Miguel. Huge congratulations to Madrone Landscape for winning the state Trophy Award for Small Commercial Installation at Halter Ranch!

Next year, at the chapter level, our goal is to have more events and give everyone a chance to get together more often. We are going to start it off with our Kick Off Dinner on January 27 sponsored by RainBird. In addition to the Beautification Awards and Golf Tournament we plan to add 3 general membership dinners, possibly a chance for CEU's, and a holiday party next year. We hope that increasing the events provided will give us more ex-posure to those few contractors out there who are not yet aware of what CLCA has to offer.

Everyone please visit CLCA.org and go to Professional>> Membership>> Member Center>> Update Company Info and up-date your business information. There is a "Find My Contactor" search on the website that is a way for potential customers to

find your business. It is promoted by the CLCA on a state level and is also linked to our chapter's site. Currently there are only 11 landscape contractors listed on this site in our area. That is a small portion of our membership. If you are not listed, please contact state headquarters to opt-in for this important feature. There have been some recent changes to the search for those already included. There are a couple of new categories and certifications and awards can now be added. So please update your information.

If you are interested in being on the SLO chapter board or on a committee, please feel free to contact me. Being a member of the board provides an op-portunity to make a difference in our industry on a state and local level. There are board positions of all interests for contractors and vendors. We greatly appreciate the help from anyone looking to get involved. The board members plan events for the year, provide legislative representation on a local and state level, and become more in tune with chang-es happening within CLCA to increase member benefits. We can always use more volunteers on the board or even on a committee.

Landscape Certified Technician Test Plant of the Month:

Echeveria subrigida ‘Fire and Ice’‘Fire and Ice’ is a named selection of the very attractive large rosette-forming Echeveria subrigida. Commonly called Red Edge Echeveria, ‘Fire and Ice’ is a succulent with spade-shape blue-green leaves that are deeply channeled and have smooth margins that often are highlight-ed with pink or rose tones. It features heavy upright stalks bearing coral-pink flowers that are orange inside with red nectaries from mid-spring to mid-summer and reaches a mature height of 12 inches and a width of 18 inches. Color variations may occur seasonally with changes in light and heat with the color palette rang-ing from green to deep mauve.

‘Fire and Ice’ is best planted in well-drained soil in full coastal sun or light shade. The plant requires some shade inland, but should be planted in a bright location for best color. It is cold hardy to about 20° F, but will not tolerate frost. Provide infrequent irrigation during the spring through fall.
